In 1970, a group of enterprising climbers had an idea: a member owned co-operative that offered quality and affordable gear in Canada. Fuelled by an entrepreneurial spirit and love of outdoor adventure, Mountain Equipment Co-op was created in August 1971.

Back in 1976
We introduced a small assortment of rental equipment. We began with snowshoes and skis and gradually added packs, tents, and mountaineering gear. Skis were available to rent "as soon as there is sufficient snow in the mountains - probably December."
