In 1992, we built our Ottawa store in an old movie theatre. It quickly became a popular attraction and a larger location was soon needed. In 2000 we moved into another reconditioned building, and over time expanded it into a 25,000 square-foot store. The building was the first retail store in Canada to comply with C2000 Green Building Certification.

Parking: Pay parking is available on the west side of the store. We have preferred parking set aside for hybrid vehicles and car co-ops, as well as two electric vehicle charging stations.
MEC supports grassroots organizations and their efforts to conserve ecologically and recreationally important places and to inspire and enable Canadians to be active outdoors. Through our Community Contributions program MEC donates gear, funding and in-kind support, helping us all keep space for adventure.
See our Community Contributions programs for details and information on how to apply.
Our meeting room can accommodate small groups, and is available to local outdoor clubs, ENGOs, or NGOs that have a similar mandate as MEC. The store floor can fit larger groups, but is available only after store hours.
We have audio visual equipment (not including laptop computers), white boards, and flip charts. Use of our space is free. If interested, please email our outreach coordinator at least a month in advance of your event.
We offer free presentations and informational store tours to interested student groups, outdoor organizations, environmental organizations, or business. Topics range learning about outdoor gear and trip planning to corporate responsibility and environmental sustainability practices.
