Climate and Carbon Footprint

Climate change is one of humanity’s most serious issues. It also affects every aspect of our core business, including:

  • Loss of snow and changes to areas where our members recreate
  • Increased costs of energy and materials
  • Risks of changed and intensified weather patterns on our supply chain and operations

We believe that every organization and government must contribute to solutions, and we work hard to do our part.

First and foremost, we have committed to reducing MEC’s carbon emission footprint by 20% from 2007 levels by 2012, including:

We calculate the true cost of our decisions by using a carbon shadow price (beginning at $50/tCO2e in 2010 and increasing by 15% annually). We engage with our supply chain to reduce our product footprint through bluesign and other initiatives. We continue to invest in wilderness conservation, and in doing so, help to protect ecological integrity. Finally, we use dialogue and communication to collaborate with and engage others.

Since 2000, we’ve worked with the Pembina Institute to calculate and review MEC’s GHG inventory for facilities emissions. Our methodology is based on the GHG Protocol.
