Expedition Support

MEC supports selected expeditions that are exploratory in nature, unique in approach (i.e., first alpine ascent, first river descent, or completely self-propelled from door to door), geographically remote, and/or technically difficult. These expeditions involve considerable commitment and organization, and call for extensive preparation and self-reliance from their participants.

Support criteria

• Expedition members must be Canadian

• Expedition participants must be active members of MEC (i.e., They have purchased or rented from MEC in the last two years).

• In return for sponsorship, MEC reserves the right to use photos and other documentation from the expedition.

Submission of a follow-up package on the expedition is required. It should include:

• A report on the accomplishments of the expedition.

• The loan of photographic negatives or slides for non-exclusive use in MEC catalogues, website or print advertising.

• You may also be asked to make an audio-visual presentation for an MEC special event. (Reimbursements may be negotiated if considered justifiable).

Note: MEC may, or may not, include expedition stories and photos in MEC communications such as catalogues, signage and our website.

Application guidelines for expedition support

Please include the following in your application for expedition support:

• An introduction of expedition participants (including MEC member numbers) and a list of their relevant qualifications.

• A description of the nature, purpose, dates and duration of the planned expedition, any relevant visuals (e.g., maps or photos).

• A description of how the expedition team has prepared in order to ensure personal responsibility (physical and environmental) during the expedition.

• Names of other expedition sponsors.

• A budget including a list of equipment required from MEC.

• A description of the capacity within the expedition team to provide high-quality, photographic images.

Due to the volume of expedition support applications we receive, MEC cannot support all applicants. When funds are provided, they are given on a case-by-case basis – neither individuals, nor certain types of expeditions, should expect continuing support.
