We strive to conduct our business in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. To limit our impact on the natural environment each of stores takes part in a battery recycling program.
Household batteries are responsible for 50% and 70% of all heavy metals found in landfills. Before purchasing a battery-operated product, think about whether you really need it. Consider borrowing from a friend or using MEC's rental program. Rechargeable batteries have considerably less impact on the environment over the course of their useful life, and can be recycled when they no longer hold a charge.
Return spent batteries, purchased from MEC, to the Member Service Desk at an MEC store and we will recycle them for you free of charge. Manufacturers include the cost recycling within the original price of rechargeable batteries, but there is a cost to recycling non-rechargeable batteries. MEC pays approximately $130 for every 30kg we recycle, something to consider when you're thinking about buying "cheap" batteries.
