MEC's prairie presence was solidified in 2002, when we opened our downtown Winnipeg store. Three deserted buildings were converted to one of our most environmentally responsible stores so far.

You can reach the store by bike. There are bike racks and we have several bike locks you can borrow free of charge. You can also purchase a cycling map of the city at our store.

Public Transit

Winnipeg Transit Bus routes to Portage Avenue include: 10, 14, 11, 15, 21, 22, 24, 27, 28, 38, 41, 43, 50, 53, 54, 55, 56, 59, 67 and 68. Buses that stop on Donald or Smith include 44, 62, 65 and 66.

Parking is available on the street or at numerous parkades near the store.

Recycled building materials, composting toilets, green roofs? What does it all look like, and how does it work? If your group is interested in taking a tour of our Green Building, please email Krista Robinson at krobinson@mec.ca for more information

Seminars and Store Tours

Is your group interested in learning about outdoor gear, trip planning, corporate responsibility or environmental sustainability practices? We do customized lectures and tours of our store.

If your organization encourages self-propelled activities or wilderness access and conservation and would be interested in promoting your organization's activities to our membership please contact us.

Gear Repair

The store offers a repair service for items such as packs and jackets. Maximize the life of your stuff by having it fixed, and limit waste and the use of dwindling natural resources.

Bike Shop Service

Our bike shop can provide any repair from minor service, such as installing racks and fenders, to a deluxe overhaul if your bike needs it. Our mechanics are experienced in all aspects of bike repair and can provide you with tips and tricks to keep you riding. Contact the store for a complete description of services and fees.

Recycling

Batteries

We will recycle batteries that were bought at our store. You can drop them off at our Member Service Desk and we'll take care of them, but please don't bring any that are broken or corroded.

Fuel Canisters

At present we are unable to recycle fuel canisters. For information on where they can be recycled contact your municipal recycling department.
