MEC Ottawa Store
In 1992, our first Ottawa store was built in an old movie theatre. It quickly became a popular destination and a larger location was soon needed. In 2000 we moved into a marvelously reconditioned building, the first retail store in Canada to comply with C2000 Green Building Certification.

Travel and Adventure Film Festival [TAFF]
Check out the 8th edition of the festival, with films,
conferences, and workshops.
After seven years of existence, The Montreal International Adventure Film Festival (MIAFF) changes its name to the Travel and Adventure Film Festival [TAFF]. To ensure the development of this unique event in North America, and to meet the demand of festivalgoers, a new step had to be taken to include the notion of travel by clearly identifying it in the name of the event and its programming.

Gear Repair
The store offers a repair service for items such as packs and jackets. Maximize the life of your stuff by having it fixed, and limit waste and the use of dwindling natural resources.
Educational Outreach
We offer free presentations and informational store tours to interested student groups, outdoor organizations, environmental organizations, or business. We can customize presentations or tours to fit your needs. For store and community event details please contact Rebecca Goostrey at 613.729.2700 or rgoostrey@mec.ca
Recycling
Batteries
We will recycle batteries that were bought at our store. You can drop them off at our Member Service Desk and we'll take care of them, but please don't bring any that are broken or corroded.

Climbing Ropes
Is your climbing rope no longer safe to use? If your rope has given you years of service and is showing signs of wear, you can give it new life.
Bring your rope into the store and we'll send it to Leigh Textile Inc. for recycling. Located in East-end Montreal, this company has been recycling various types of textile fibres since the 1920s. After it's been finely shredded, your faithful rope will be resurrected as acoustic insulation, padding for cars, or some other type of padding or stuffing.
Fuel Canisters
MEC Ottawa recycles butane-propane canisters such as those from Primus, MSR, Brunton and Snowpeak. We cannot recycle propane cylinders. Please bring your empty canisters to the Member Services Desk.
Bicycle Tires and Tubes
We are now equipped to take back used bicycle tires and tubes. In conjunction with OnTire, an Ottawa based recycling company, we can recycle the steel belt into new steel products, and use the rubber as an ingredient in asphalt, running tracks, or playground surfacing. Please note that we can only accept bicycle tires.
