Exploring while you’re there

Wherever you travel, day hiking is one of the best ways to explore the local parks and trails (it’s a nice nature break from city sightseeing too). Want to go hiking but don’t know how to start? Here are some resources:

Visiting a Canadian city this summer and don’t have a car? Check out MEC-sponsored Parkbus, which connects cities to campgrounds, canoe access points and hiking trails.

Day hiking looks

Look for durable, stretchy and breathable layers for comfort on the hiking trail. Merino wool clothing is naturally antimicrobial, which reduces odours – perfect for travelling or multi-day trips. When you’re packing, bring along a lightweight backpack (like the MEC Travel Light Daypack below); it can carry your essentials for day hiking or when you’re walking through a new city.

Lightweight and packable, the MEC Hydrofoil Stretch Jacket (below) is fully seam-taped and perfect for activity in wet climates or where you expect foul weather. 40-denier nylon promises durability and 4-way stretch that’s soft and supple, never crunchy.

Built for flash storms on mountain routes or steady rain on hiking trails, the MEC Alpine Go GORE-TEX (below) is a versatile jacket that’s both packable and waterproof. Generous underarm zips give you plenty of ventilation when the elevation gain starts to get intense.

Kids’ clothes for rain or shine

Weather can be unpredictable, but that doesn’t mean it should wreck your family vacation. Pack along layers to keep kids sun safe, dry and happy to keep moving.

UPF sun protection

Clothes with UPF sun protection are easier to put on than sunscreen (though you’ll need that too). They’re a must-have when the family takes off somewhere warm for spring break.

MEC Campfire Fleece Jacket

This fleece is nice and simple so it works as a mid-layer to wear under a rain jacket or ski shell. It has classic style and even a bit of a retro nod, but the brushed polyester is entirely warmth-without-weight modern.

The Campfire fleece comes in an infant sizechildren’s size and youth’s size.

Where to next?

In a recent blog post, MEC Ambassador Bruce Kirkby highlighted some advice that changed the course of his life: never put until tomorrow the trip you can launch today. Wherever you’re going – somewhere close, somewhere warm, or a sizeable adventure– make sure you come prepared for a few weather surprises.
