The 15 most-loved products in Quebec

On May 14, 2003, MEC’s 8th store opened its doors in Montréal – marking the first location in Quebec. During the last 15 years, members discovered our many products and tested them in every corner of the Belle Province. We thought that you might like to discover which products became must-haves over the years. If you love the outdoors, you probably already own at least one of these practical items.

1. PACKTOWL PERSONAL TOWEL

Packtowl

It absorbs four times its weight in water, then wrings out almost completely dry. Available in 4 convenient sizes for the beach, the gym or travel.

2. HYDROFOIL JACKET AND PANTS

For seasoned travellers and those who love hiking, the Hydrofoil jacket is a must-have. It’s light, it breathes, it’s totally waterproof and most important of all, it’s affordable. With all the rain (and snow and freezing rain) that fell on Quebec this spring, sales of this jacket probably doubled. Add in the matching pants, and you’re completely protected.

3. MEC DELPHINUS -9°C SLEEPING BAG (WOMEN) and MEC DRACO 0°C SLEEPING BAG (MEN)

MEC’s down sleeping bags owe their popularity to their great quality and a price that is a lot less than that of a comparable sleeping bag. They are comfortable enough to feel like a plush hotel bed, but one that can take you outside.

4. MEC HUT BOOTIE—UNISEX

It might be a cliché, but there’s no better way to say it: to try them is to love them. (They’re on back order at the moment, but they’ll be back with a new look sometime in July.)

5. HELINOX CHAIR ONE

The frame of this chair is made with technology transferred from high-end tents, making it light enough to take anywhere. Want to steal the show from the late night fireside guitar player? Impress everyone with how easy it is to set up your Helinox chair.

6. MSR HUBBA HUBBA NX TENT

This is the top-selling MSR tent, and when you purchase yours with MEC, part of the money you spend goes to helping conserve your outdoor playground.

7. MEC REACTOR 6.5 DOUBLE SLEEPING PAD—UNISEX

Apparently Quebecois people love to sleep cuddled up close to each other! This sleeping pad will make you feel like you brought a full sized mattress on your next camping trip.

8. MEC BROOKS DRY BAG

MEC Brooks Dry Bag

With all the lakes and waterways in Quebec, its no wonder these dry bags are one of the top sellers in the province. Super practical for all water sports, even stand up paddling.

9. Patagonia Torrentshell Jacket—Men, women and youth

Patagonia’s reputation is well established, and this jacket gives you the technical performance you need to take on the rain.  The MEC Aquanator is another great option to effectively seal out moisture and shed precipitation, and it comes in at an unbeatable price.

10. MEC TOASTER SUIT—INFANTS TO CHILDREN

This classic design quickly became a favourite for parents. The infant-sized version provides quick access to change diapers, and the children’s version has a seam that can be opened to make the legs longer as your little one grows.

11. MEC ROLLING CONTINENT TRAVEL PACK—UNISEX

Quebecois people travel a lot, and MEC travel bags are particularly well conceived. This one has wheels as well as a harness so you can carry it like a backpack.

12. MEC FORGE 65 BACKPACK (MEN)

This is a relatively new bag, but it quickly made its way on the must-have list because it’s extremely comfortable, and its main compartment has 3 access points.

13. MEC PACK RAIN COVER

Rain makes this simple item a must-have. It’s practical enough to use on the trail and in the city, so you never have to worry about your stuff getting damp.

14. MEC HAPPYTRAILS CHILD CARRIER BACKPACK—INFANTS TO CHILDREN

MEC Happytrails Child Carrier

Outdoor lovers are always happy to share nature with their little ones, and Quebecois are no exception. Watch out for low branches!

15. MEC AQUANOT 20L PANNIER—UNISEX

Completely water resistant, this pannier will keep your stuff dry around town and when you’re roaming the countryside.
