##### What’s going on here?
Last year I rode Ridley’s ridiculously light Helium SL. I loved it, so was honestly a bit hesitant to move over to the Noah SL. Plying much of my trade in the hills, I was worried: how would the additional weight translate? On top of that, I took delivery of the Noah SL shortly before setting off for the sun-drenched shores of Hawaii’s Big Island, so didn’t have much time to acclimatize to its very different geometry and super-aero design (claimed to save 7% of wind resistance over more traditional, round-tubed designs). Truth be told, I had no idea what to expect.

##### How’s the build kit?
The Noah SL shipped with Shimano wunderkind mechanical groupset – Dura-Ace. With lightning fast shifting, ridiculously powerful brakes (mounted in their traditional position – as brakes should be!) and quite possibly the stiffest crank on the planet, Dura-Ace 9000 is nothing short of stellar. The Zipp 60s upped the fast ante that much more. After swapping in my own stem, seat and handlebar, I immediately felt pretty dialled.

##### 


##### Tell me about these aerodynamics.
At first glance, it’s evident that the Noah was built for aerodynamic slipperiness. Look closer, and you realize the devil is in the details. The distinctive F-Splitfork is a fascinating piece of bike tech: each fork leg features a small, narrow gap that improves airflow by pulling turbulent air away from the rotating front wheel. On top of that, the fork crown is neatly integrated into the head tube and downtube, with a small lip extension at the top trailing edge of the fork.

The meticulously shaped Kamm tail downtube features two narrow grooves running down its leading edge to channel air more efficiently across the frame’s surface. And that sculpted downtube leads to a big and beefy pressfit bottom bracket for stiffness.

The seat tube neatly wraps around the rear wheel to further reduce drag. An aero-shaped seat post features two channels running the length of the post, similar to the downtube. Lowered seat stays on the seat tube round shave grams, boost stiffness and further improve aerodynamics.



##### How’s the handling?
After logging over 700km on the Noah SL that included long climbs (Kohala Mountain Road), plenty of winding terrain, desolate stretches under full gas (Akoni Pule Highway), and frenzied sprints, I definitely put it through its paces. One thing I can say for certain is that the Noah SL’s handling is nothing short of racy; quick and razor sharp with impressive feedback, capable of carving just about any arc you throw at it.



##### The big question: were you faster?
Honestly, it’s hard to quantify aerodynamic efficiency – I have no real gauge of how to measure if I was 7% faster than I was on my Helium SL. I will say, however, that rolling at 45km/hr and throwing down an attack brings with it an immediate reaction and a sudden increase in tempo. The stiffness of the package offers exceptional get up and go, but it’s surprisingly comfortable: there’s no buzzy harshness normally associated with aero bikes. Bumps, vibrations and bigger potholes are nicely absorbed, always offering confident feedback every step of the way, without beating you up in the process.



##### Should I buy one?
If you’re looking for a race ready bike that’s just as capable ripping hair-raising crits on cobbles as it is at logging training miles with your closest buddies, the Ridley Noah SL should definitely make the top of your list. Stiff, fast, composed, sexy and surprisingly comfortable, it’s definitely a winner.

Review: the Ridley Noah SL

A long time ago, preparing for one of my first trips to the mountains, I bought a pair of [MEC Ferrata Pants](http://www.mec.ca/product/5029-910/mec-ferrata-pants-womens/). At the time, I didn’t know much about anything. Truthfully, I bought the pants because they looked cute. It wasn’t until an expedition to India, Pakistan and Peru that I realized there was something unusually tough about their Schoeller soft shell fabric. My Ferrata Pants wore me into the ground before I came close to wearing them out. The only drawback? A tendency to bag out over time. By the end of a trip, they didn’t have the same shape and fit they started with, and they held moisture. So along with having a baggy bottom, the pants got heavier and more restrictive as I sweated. Not ideal.

Fast-forward to today and I’ve got a much improved pair of Schoeller Dynamic pants in my quiver: The [MEC Constantia](http://www.mec.ca/product/5040-133/mec-constantia-pants-womens/) – the brainchild of my good friends Spring Harrison (MEC Designer) and Katy Holm (MEC Product Line Manager). Understanding the strengths and limitations of the fabric, Spring and Katy did a masterful job of designing pants as durable as the Ferratas while solving issues of breathability and fit. The Constantia doesn’t bag out and it doesn’t hold moisture. Not even a bit. The durability of Schoeller means you can bash your knees against granite, dirt, tree branches, bricks, and whatever else without catching or tearing. Beyond that, they do a compelling job of combining urban style with lightweight alpine function.



So, what will I do with these pants this summer? The Constantia’s skinny silhouette and 4-way stretch, means I’ll be using them around home in Squamish for days bouldering, sport climbing, and long routes on the Chief (and some espresso sipping at the Adventure Centre). The low-profile means I won’t be wearing them over long johns or mountain boots, but for fast and light alpine missions they’re going to be my not-so-secret weapon.

#### The Constantia/Highpoint


Ridiculously durable with good looks to boot, the Constantia and [Highpoint](/en/product/5040-122/HighPoint-Pants) might be the most high-performing and bombproof soft shell pants we’ve ever produced. Plus, the simple design means you can maintain a low-profile in the city, too.



With the [Arque](http://www.mec.ca/product/5040-123/mec-arque-pants-mens/) and [Sanchali](http://www.mec.ca/product/5040-132/mec-sanchali-knicker-womens/), MEC designers sought to create a casual looking pant with serious cragging potential. Between the stellar colour offerings and grade-pushing technical details, they manage to hit the sweet spot between heel-hooking flexibility and micro-brewery aestheticism (heck, the Arque managed to sneak it’s way into MEC Climbing Ambassador [Joshua Lavigne](/en/explore/mec-ambassadors/joshua-lavigne)‘s heart last year).



#### The Ferrata Pant (2001 – still going strong)


The older sibling of the Constantia/Highpoint, the [Ferrata](/en/product/5029-910/Ferrata-Pants) have reached cult status thanks to their insane durability and activity-to-activity versatility. Expect to see them at the crag, on bicycles or high in the alpine.



#### The Rad Pant (1989 – whenever they finally wear out)


Ah, The Rad Pant. Originally deemed “the ultimate movement pant,” Rad Pants can still be spotted in the wild today. Having spanned every jewel tone and earthy shade imaginable, Rad Pants featured a built-in belt, elasticized cuffs and harness-compatible thigh pockets for stashing PowerBars and your Disc-Man.



#### Rainbow Neon Lycra (so big in 1984)


The year is 1989, and Lycra has been the go-to climbing choice (for sport climbers at least) for nearly a decade. Now available in such stellar colours as Zebra, Neon Pink and Slithery Snake Skin, the MEC-brand Lycra Tight manages to unlock previously unheard of climbing grades and abilities in extreme high-stepping.



#### Homemade, patched or thrifted (timeless)


It was the 70s. It was a different time. Climbing pants weren’t really readily available, so the best option was to create your own, find some white painter’s pants or wear some thick nylon track suit bottoms. Tight-fitting wool knickers were also acceptable.

As a staff gear tester at MEC and a rider who gets in 100+ days a year, I’ve had a chance to try out many different Ghost models over the past few years, and I was incredibly eager to get my hands on one of the new 2016 arrivals, the [Ghost SL AMR X 8 LC](/en/product/5044-702/Slamr-X-8-LC-Bicycle).

The frames for the new AMR bikes (short for All Mountain Ride) are redesigned to use a classic FSR suspension platform – a tried-and-true success story in the mountain biking industry. The SL AMR X 8 LC is built with a carbon fibre front triangle and aluminum rear triangle, both of which are updated and  improved.



Its Fox 34 Performance Series suspension fork is adjustable and can be set at 150mm or 120mm of travel depending on the changes happening on the trail. The fork is paired nicely with the new 150mm Fox Float X Performance rear shock, which uses Fox’s new Open-Medium-Firm 3-position adjustment platform.



2016 marks the debut of Shimano’s 11-speed XT group, and the 2×11 XT drivetrain is spec’d on this tier of AMR. The bike uses a full XT level drivetrain including medium-caged clutch derailleur, shift levers, 36-26 double crankset, and 11-42T wide range cassette. It also comes stock with Shimano XT 2-piston brakes and uses 180mm rotors in both the front and rear for aggressive all mountain riding. All of the cables for the drivetrain, seatpost, and rear hose for the hydraulic brake are routed internally through the frame with clean and stylish exit points.



The changes to the AMR series make these more robust and versatile mountain bikes. A 67-degree head tube angle is slack enough for descending aggressive terrain, without compromising climbing or maneuverability, and the Torsion X chainstay combined with oversized linkage bearings vastly improves the rear-end stiffness when compared to the previous standard chainstay bridge.



The most interesting change to the AMR design involves the ability to change the rear travel of the bike. The design basically allows  you to build three different bikes simply by changing the lower shock mount. To do it, you need to have a second/spare shock with a longer (or shorter) stroke length, but by flipping the lower shock mount and installing the spare shock, you can obtain more (or less) rear wheel travel depending on what you need.

As an example, if you’re interested in using the SL AMR (150mm of rear travel) as your everyday bike, but you’re also interested in doing a few XC or marathon-style races through the year, all you’d need is a shorter travel fork and shock to swap in, and your bike would be better suited to that riding discipline. You could switch from having 150mm front and 150mm rear, to 130mm front and 130mm rear in a matter of minutes.

All in all, the [SL AMR X LC 8](/en/product/5044-702/Slamr-X-8-LC-Bicycle) is truly a do-it-all, lightweight carbon mountain bike. It feels nimble and snappy on the climbs, and descends confidently even when the trails get aggressive. The design, the thought and care that have gone into the new AMR platform have produced a very versatile and incredibly fun ride!

Bike Review: The Ghost 2016 SL AMR

I’m interested in what folks keep in their packs for emergencies, and I like to compare notes so I can create the ultimate kit suited to my style of backcountry travel. My trips are usually one-day missions, where I depart from home at 3am and venture into the darkness. During early season, I start thinking about what I should include or pull from my bag. Contents might change depending on the mission or how remote my destination is.

There’s always a focus on lightening our loads in the backcountry and I cringe at the idea of adding more gear, but there should be a few minimum items carried by all enthusiasts. I’d like to think this list, made with one- to three-day excursions in mind, hits the sweet spot. Some of these items never leave my bag and would see me through an injury or unplanned bivy. Wherever possible, I try to use items that are multi-purpose to save space. Coordinate with your trip partners to find out what gear can be shared amongst a group and adjust your first aid kit to group numbers and personal requirements.

##### Ski straps
I carry four [ski straps](/en/products/snow/ski-straps/c/2142): two 15cm straps and two 24cm straps as a minimum. The uses are endless, from keeping you organized and efficient when loading a helicopter to lashing your skies/poles together like a pro.

Other strap hacks:

- Use the strap to bind your skins to your skis in the event they aren’t sticking.
- If your skins aren’t sticking to the snow, these add grip to your stride.
- Lash extras to your pack.
- Compress stuff sacks.
- You can immobilize limbs for a variety of injuries when you use them with ski poles or sticks. They can also hold pressure on soft tissue injuries or soakers on large open wounds.
- Helps MacGyver a rescue toboggan by fastening skis together.

##### Small headlamp
If I know I’m going to need a lamp, I’ll usually take a high powered model. I wouldn’t recommend a small [headlamp](/en/products/gear/lighting-and-headlamps/headlamps/c/1306?q=%3Asales-rank) as your primary light source, but I carry one as a backup unit for navigation. I’m a fan of the [Petzl Zipka headlamp](/en/product/5051-147/Zipka-Headlamp).

##### Tape
Tape can be used for injury aid, taping parts and skins to skis, and general resourcefulness.

- Electrician tape is great until temperatures dip.
- [Duct tape](/en/product/1999-804/Duct-Tape---Silver-48mm-x-25m-Roll) is best, but you can’t avoid the sticky residue.
- White medical tape is great, and can help in a real emergency.

##### Emergency bivy or tarp and sleeping pad
[Bivies](/en/products/gear/tents-and-shelters/bivy-sacks/c/1437?q=%3Asales-rank) or [tarps](/en/products/gear/tents-and-shelters/tarps-and-light-shelters/c/1441?q=%3Asales-rank) are great to have if an injury crops up. These lightweight shelters provide insulation from the snow and protection from the elements. And should you ever get trapped by the dark, you’ll need a stronghold.

- There are many emergency models of bivies to choose from. I tend to carry a siltarp that can fit two people for additional warmth and can also double as a shelter. A bright color helps you be seen.
- A [bivy sleeping pad](/en/product/0808-097/Evazote-Bivy-Sleeping-Pad) is cut to fit flat inside your pack, making it a great seat or extra insulation for an unexpected night out. I’ll often sit on my pack and put this under my feet, and it definitely makes a difference in heat loss.

##### Lighter and firestarter
In cases of delayed exit or unexpected overnights, fire is a great asset. Also, if someone incurs an injury and you’re stuck awaiting evacuation, it can help with shock prevention.

- A waterproof and impact-resistant [lighter](/en/product/5041-318/Floating-Lighter) case is great. I always store mine in an additional re-sealable plastic bag, because you can’t be too prepared. It’s best to make sure your ski partner has one as well.
- There are a few different kinds of [firestarters](/en/products/gear/camp-kitchen/stoves%2c-fuel-and-fire/fire-starters%2c-matches-and-lighters/c/1282?q=%3Asales-rank), so select the one best for you and test it out before you depart. I prefer the [sticks](/en/product/5006-888/Fire-Starter) and have had good success starting a fire in doubtful conditions.

##### Multi-tool
You never know when you might need to do a field repair. Find a [multi-tool](/en/products/gear/knives-and-tools/multi-tools/c/1291?q=%3Asales-rank) that works to cover your needs in an unexpected situation. Look at driver bits that suit the equipment you carry.



##### First aid kit
Taking a Wilderness First Aid course will help you think outside the box in case you end up dealing with backcountry emergencies. A [first aid kit](/en/products/gear/health-and-safety/first-aid-kits/c/1210) is a definite necessity. Being able to modify or tweak your gear can be a real lifesaver.

- One thing I always make sure I have is one pressure dressing. The soaker gauze utilizes tensor bandage-like wrap for pressure, but can also be used as support for sprains and strains.
- Suture bandages, and lots of them.
- Bring along some Ibuprofen for that early season hip flexor pain.

##### Bailing wire
Simply put, if something starts falling apart or breaks, this is a great way to hold it together.

##### Synthetic jacket**
**
I carry my [MEC Commix Hoodie](/en/product/5036-944/Commix-Hoodie) (women can grab the [MEC Spicy Hoodie](/en/product/5037-102/Spicy-Hoodie)) in a light dry bag and squeeze all the air out so it’s totally compact. Warm, compressible layers are essential to any backcountry outing. I bring mine every single time.

##### Pole baskets
In serious powder, poles are useless without baskets, so bring an extra pair and it could save your day, or at the very least, get you a few more turns. [Black Diamond Powder Baskets](/en/product/5005-941/Powder-Baskets) are a great option.

##### Prima Bar
Fight the bonk and fuel the engine! These [tasty bars](/en/brand/prima/products/gear/food-and-drink/energy-bars/c/1178?q=%3Asales-rank&text=) are equally good frozen or thawed and pack a decent calorie punch for their size and weight. Cherry Coconut is my favourite flavour.

##### Small hot packs
[Hot packs](/en/products/gear/health-and-safety/hand-and-toe-warmers/c/1212) make the coldest part of the night bearable. Make sure you bring multiple, and place these small packs in key areas to keep you warm, like around your femoral arteries (target it at your inner upper thigh or where they branch out at your tailbone). It’s amazing how long a single night can feel, and these little guys give you the confidence boost to see the night through.

##### Skin wax
When you’re out spring skiing with sticky snow conditions, it’s almost mandatory to keep a small block of [skin wax](/en/product/4006-110/Glop-Stopper-Wax) to prevent snow building up on your skin bases. Bringing this wax along helps you save your hip flexors and energy.

##### Batteries
Someone always forgets to put fresh [batteries](/en/products/gear/electronics/batteries/c/1113) in either their headlamp or the transceiver. Pack a couple as backup and be the hero of the day.

What to pack for a day of backcountry skiing

I had the chance to take Ghost Bikes’ latest all-mountain machine out for a test ride. After a successful year on the most playful and fun bike I’ve owned – the Ghost Riot 7 LC – I was excited to try the new model, the 2015 Ghost Riot LT 8 LC. It has some distinct differences from the Riot 7 LC I rode in 2014, and here are my thoughts on the changes that created the new LT series.



The “LT” stands for “long-travel,” and it reflects the adjustable 150/120mm Fox 34 Talas fork that’s spec’d on the bike. Using the same 130mm Riot-link suspension as the Riot 7 LC, the LT 8 has a taller stack height and a slacker geometry compared to its predecessor. It has a 67° head tube angle for better control while descending aggressive terrain, without compromising climbing or maneuverability.



The carbon fibre Riot LT 8 LC is the mid-level model to the Riot LT series. Spec’d with a full Shimano XT drivetrain, it includes a clutch-style, medium-caged rear derailleur and a 38-24 tooth 2×10 crankset. The brake system is also Shimano XT, which is recognized as one of the leaders in 2-piston hydraulic brakes.



Adjustable seat posts have become a favourite with mountain bikers, and the KS LEV post that comes with the bike is a solid and reliable example of why they’re so popular. With 125mm of cable-actuated adjustable travel, this post lets you position your seat in the right place for any trail situation. All cables are routed internally, which offers more than just aesthetic value. It also protects cables from prematurely wearing out and keeps them running smooth and clean.



One of the most notable features of the new Riot LT is the Cane Creek’s Double Barrel Inline. The stability and responsiveness of the Riot’s carbon frame is nicely complemented by the precise tuning capabilities of the shock. The ability to fine-tune your suspension with the Riot’s suspension design has brought this bike to another level of excellence.

The suspension curve follows a digressive trend in the first 20% of travel to help you settle into an efficient pedalling platform. From there, the curve takes a more linear path as you move through the 20-80% range of your travel. When the Riot Link engages in the last 20% of travel, the rate shifts to a more progressive curve for bottom-out control.

The result is a bike that pedals fast, is comfortable through its different ranges of travel, and ramps up for big hits.



I highly recommend this bike to anyone looking for a nimble trail bike with the angles to make climbing a breeze, but still allows for aggressive descending. With 20mm more fork travel, a higher stack height, and slacker head tube angle than the LC, the LT model is a confidence booster when you tackle technical trails. The Riot LT is a highly capable bike that builds off the success of the award-winning suspension design used throughout the Riot series.

Most people think about tents when they think about camping, only a few hardcore minimalists picture a tarp hung over a bivy sack. But a tent combined with a tarp can revolutionize your camping experience

## Kitchen and assembly zone
At the end of a long hiking or paddling day, you might find yourself in heavy rain, wet and chilled. In this case, the first thing to do is set up a tarp. Once up, you change into your dry clothes and pitch the tent underneath it while you stay dry. Once the tent is set up, you can move it to another spot if you don’t plan to sleep under the tarp.

While you’re dry and warm (and assured of staying that way), you can contemplate supper or start getting warmed with a mug of hot soup. Rain isn’t the only reason to put up the tarp. If you rig end one low to the ground or a windbreak, it can block gusts and make it much easier to cook and more pleasant to hang out.



## Living room and porch
If you wake to bad weather or you’re taking a day off, you have a spacious refuge where you can hang out, sip coffee and observe changing weather, light and tides. You can even bask in the warmth of a wood stove or a small fire. Just try that in a tent.



## Which tarp?
A light, practical option is a lightweight nylon tarp impregnated with silicone. Water beads and runs off and they can be rigged in a variety of ways. An excellent option is the [MEC Silicone Guides Tarp](/en/product/5027-716/Silicone-Guides-Tarp). It fits into a small stuff sack that’s hardly bigger than a 1L water bottle will provide a 4 x 3-meter space, big enough for two people to sit and relax.

Once you get used to adding a tarp to your camp setup, it will become as essential as hot soup or fine chocolate to your camping weekends and multi-day adventures.

I’ve had a fantastic season on my Cagua series Ghost Bike, riding quite aggressively in multiple disciplines. It’s been incredibly capable of handling whatever I’ve asked of it – everything from all-day XC epics to steep and gnarly North Shore descents.

Using four bar linkage suspension, the Cagua is made to be an efficient pedaling machine. I found it had limited pedal bob on climbs, but that didn’t take away from how it handled downhill. It maintained a supple and active rear end on descents, and geometry wise, the 67° head tube angle boosted confidence on steep, technical lines.



The aluminum Cagua 6540 is the entry-level model to the Ghost Bikes enduro category of bikes, and uses 155mm of travel for an all-encompassing ride. The 6540 is spec’d with a Shimano drivetrain, mostly consisting of XT and SLX level components. Ghost has subbed in XT components for more important shifting pieces to keep the drivetrain as solid as possible at the price point. The brake system is Shimano SLX, which has become a benchmark for what should be expected from 2-piston brakes. To keep braking power optimal without adding extra weight, it uses a 203mm front rotor and a 180mm rear instead of stocking dual 203mm rotors.

Perhaps one of the greatest inventions for the modern mountain bike, dropper posts have become almost a necessity for aggressive riding. The Cagua 6540 comes stock with the [X-fusion Hilo post](/en/product/5032-950/Hilo-125-Seat-Post), which gives you 125mm of adjustability, and is another confidence-inspiring component that doesn’t require aftermarket purchase.



Wheel size is a much debated concept, but what really matters is what is going to work for you and your riding style. The Cagua series uses 650B wheels, and has developed the frame geometry to accurately complement the wheel size. 650B has recently grown in popularity due to some of its advantages including lower rolling resistance, better traction, and an overall smoother feeling ride.

Over the past season, my Cagua series bike performed solidly with all I’ve thrown at it. For the price-point, the 6540 gets you into the Cagua line-up with a mid- to high-end component spec, and is an awesome way to get hooked on mountain biking.

Community

If you love trails, snow, water or fresh air, this is your store. Visit MEC Montreal for outdoor gear, know-how and inspiration.

MEC Montreal opened in 2003, and was our first store in Quebec. It was also the first retail building in Quebec to meet the national C2000 Green Building Standard, and the amount of energy it consumes is nearly 70% less than was required by the Model National Energy Code at the time of construction. Here are some of the green features:

- The wood deck inside the curved roof was salvaged from the Seagram’s distillery in Ville Lasalle. Salvaged wood is also used in the entrance canopy and railings.
- To reduce material waste, the concrete slabs contain 27% blast furnace slag (a by-product of steel manufacturing).
- 50% of the materials used in the building are made of recycled content, by weight.
- Walls are insulated with cellulose fibre from recycled newsprint to cut down on energy consumption (they provide about twice as much thermal insulation as conventional retail buildings from the same era).
- Captured precipitation (stormwater run-off) from the roof is stored in a 45,000L underground cistern, and is used for landscaping and toilet water – this cuts our potable water use in half.
- To keep energy usage down, the concrete floor acts as a thermal reservoir that’s warmed or cooled by fluid pumped through embedded piping. Twelve geothermal wells pump extracted heat in winter and disperse heat in summer.
- There’s mostly natural ventilation with fresh air coming in through underground tunnels. In summer, warm air rises and escapes through roof vents and motorized window openings.
- CO2 sensors keep a good balance of fresh air coming in, so energy isn’t wasted in heating or cooling.
- Lots of daylight reduces the need for artificial lighting. The lights we do have shut off automatically when there’s enough natural light to save energy (for both the lights and the energy needed to cool heat from the bulbs).

Like all MEC buildings, we’re proud to say that this store is carbon neutral. We purchase Green Electricity Certificates and Green Natural Gas Certificates from [Bullfrog Power](https://www.bullfrogpower.com/), which means that Bullfrog procures renewable energy (wind, micro-hydro and biogas) on our behalf for electricity and natural gas.

### Recycling
If you bought any of the items below at MEC, you can bring them back to our store for recycling:

- Batteries (no broken or corroded ones please).
- Bike tires (no tubes) – they can get ground up for tarmac or playground surfaces.

Due to safety concerns, we do not accept used flammable goods, including camping gas canisters, stove fuel, flares, bear bangers and bear spray. Please contact your local waste management office to find out how to properly dispose of these items.

MEC Burlington opened in 2008, and was designed to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification. Compared to conventional retail buildings from the same period, it was made to be 70% more energy efficient. Here are some of the green features:

- A photovoltaic system generates energy that’s fed into the power grid.
- The structure and envelope are designed to be disassembled and repurposed when the building reaches the end of its useful life.
- There are separate systems for heating, cooling and ventilation to maximize energy efficiency. For heating, there are high-efficiency gas boilers with radiant in-floor heating. For cooling, there’s an ice storage system that uses off-electricity. And for ventilation, there’s a fan-assisted displacement system with heat recovery.
- Many high clerestory windows at roofline reduce the need for artificial lighting. The lights we do have turn down or off automatically when there’s enough natural light to save energy (for both the lights and the energy needed to cool heat from the bulbs).
- The combo of low-flow fixtures and grey water usage cuts potable water requirements by half.
- Captured precipitation (stormwater) provides water for all non-potable uses, like toilets and garden watering. Stormwater gets retained and infiltrated on site and won’t discharge water to municipal storm drains (except under extraordinary circumstances, like an enormous storm).
- Landscaping uses non-invasive species that encourage bird and insect populations.

The space we are taking over provides great potential to bring the MEC brand to life inside and out.

The design will be in-keeping with the new architectural embodiment of the MEC brand, with extensive use of wood on both the inside and outside of the building. Green building features will include a high-performance building envelope and heating, cooling and ventilation (HVAC) system.

All MEC facilities are subject to our internal green building program, which establishes minimum performance standards. MEC Laval will be no different.

Two of the most important aspects of green buildings are the building envelope and the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (or HVAC) system. The Laval store will provide R40 and R60 thermal performance in the walls and roof, respectively, and feature a best-in-class roof top HVAC system.

Energy efficient lighting will also be used throughout the store. Plus, Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) will be purchased for all energy consumed by MEC Laval.

Located in the heart of the city, MEC Kelowna is a prime location for Okanagan residents and visitors. The store opened in 2016 after doing extensive renovations to an existing building, which included updates to make the space more energy efficient. Here are some of the green features:

- Moved into an existing building, which saved on construction materials and the embodied energy costs.
- Significant updates to the roof insulation, since that’s a major spot to cut down on heat loss (just like people, buildings can lose a lot of heat through their highest point).
- Rooftop solar system pre-heats the hot water for the building to cut down on energy required.
- Upgraded to a high-efficiency HVAC to reduce energy use, and a heat recovery ventilator reduces the amount of energy required to heat the building.
- Furniture is certified by Level, a third-party sustainability certification program that looks at environmental and social impacts.
- To cut down on materials required, there are minimal floor coverings.
- To reduce energy consumption, we use predominately high-efficiency LED lighting controlled by auto dimmers and occupancy sensors in some areas, and on automated schedules elsewhere.
- Landscaping uses non-invasive species that encourage bird and insect populations, and doesn’t need irrigation except for in drought conditions.
- Low-flow fixtures such as toilets, urinals and shower heads reduce overall water consumption.

Like all MEC buildings, we’re proud to say that this store is carbon neutral. We purchase Green Electricity Certificates and Green Natural Gas Certificates from [Bullfrog Power](https://www.bullfrogpower.com/), which means that Bullfrog procures renewable energy (wind, micro-hydro and biogas) on our behalf for electricity and natural gas.

MEC Ottawa opened in 2000. Before we started construction, there was a 40-year-old building on the site. We carefully dismantled it and then reused as much material as possible for our store. In the end, about 75% of the existing building (by weight) was incorporated into our store. To add to that accomplishment, this was the first retail building in Canada to comply with Canada’s C2000 Green Building Standard. Here are some of the green features:

- 80% of all the material travelled less than 500km to the site, which cuts down on transportation emissions. For example, rock excavated from the site was used in cladding.
- The floor is made from timber reclaimed from the St. Lawrence River and the previous building.
- During construction, we used panelized material and screwed connections, so the building can be taken apart, reused and recycled more easily when it’s reached the end of its life.
- One of the walls on the upper floor is infilled with bailed straw, a natural, renewable resource. (Check it out in the viewing portal.)
- Rock Wool insulation in other walls have 50% recycled content.
- The heating system uses a 94%-efficient natural gas hydronic boiler system to heat water.
- CO2 sensors keep a good balance of fresh air coming in, so energy isn’t wasted in heating or cooling.
- A skylight and roof monitor means we don’t need as much artificial lighting.
- To keep landscaping looking good, the irrigation system uses non-potable rainwater that gets gravity-fed to plants.
- Electric vehicle charging stations have reserved parking spots.

### Outdoor impact
This year, we’re  donating $1 million to Canadian outdoor organizations to teach outdoor skills, protect wild spaces and grow the communities of people getting active outside. Funding  supports groups across Canada with avalanche safety training, outdoor programs for youth, conserving wilderness and more. MEC was born in Vancouver in 1971. Over the decades, we’ve moved through a number of spaces, and our current flagship store in Olympic Village was designed with sustainability from the ground up.

Here are some of the green features:

- **Wood is good**. In fact, when it’s a mass timber superstructure like this flagship store, wood is great. The timber is a composite, which means it doesn’t use old-growth sources. It’s also a renewable building material, stores carbon, and can easily be reused at the end of its life.
- **Drip, drip, drip**: It rains 150+ days a year here, so we make the most of it. The roof captures rainwater that funnels into an underground cistern to provide up to 80% of the water used for flushing toilets.
- **Less is more**: 30% less s’mores around the campfire? Not so good. 30% less energy used by a building? Brilliant. This space is designed to use almost one-third less energy than the standards set out by the national energy code for buildings.
- **A renewable day in the neighbourhood**: We’re connected to an innovative energy system that recovers heat from untreated urban wastewater (a sanitized way of saying sewage). It’s renewable and doesn’t rely on fossil fuels.
- **Behind the scenes**: Some of the biggest energy savings come from things you can’t see: heating and cooling systems. The building envelope has more insulation than most and the HVAC units are high-efficiency.
- **Carbon neutral**: Like all MEC buildings, this space is operationally carbon neutral. We buy renewable energy certificates (wind and low-impact hydro) to match the electricity we use in this location.
- **Safe for salmon**: It’s official: this building is certified as Salmon-Safe, thanks to its progressive water management practices. It’s only the second Salmon-Safe urban site in BC – [MEC Head Office](/en/explore/head-office) was the first.

If you bought any of the items below at MEC, you can bring them back to our store for recycling:

- Household batteries (no broken or corroded ones please)
- Bicycle tires and tubes
- Climbing rope – it could become dog leashes, acoustic insulation or stuffing

Due to safety concerns, we do not accept used flammable goods, including camping gas canisters, stove fuel, flares, bear bangers and bear spray. Please contact your local waste management office to find out how to properly dispose of these items.

MEC Kitchener is a new purpose-built store that has been constructed to our specifications. The store will join the co-op’s growing portfolio of high-performance green buildings.

All MEC facilities are subject to our internal green building program, which establishes minimum performance standards. MEC Kitchener will be no different. Like all MEC buildings, we’re proud to say that this store will be operationally carbon neutral.

The building incorporates key elements of MEC’s renewed architectural brand, including a distinctive floating canopy to mark the store’s entrance and wood-infused interiors to define the store and display merchandise.

Green building features will include:

- A high-performance building envelope and heating, cooling and ventilation (HVAC) system
- A high R-value thermal barrier, allowing for superior insulation and energy savings.
- Energy-efficient LED lighting and low-flow fixtures throughout the store.

Energy efficient lighting will also be used throughout the store. Plus, Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) will be purchased for all energy consumed by MEC’s Quebec City store.

Bike services

Every purchase at MEC supports your community. From helping people get to Rouge National Urban Park, to leading nature walks and teaching families how to plan their first camping trip, these local organizations and programs make getting outside just a little bit easier. MEC works with many groups in the North York community, including:



Never camped before? Don’t know where to start, or just want a refresher before your next trip? With support from MEC, [Parks Canada’s Learn to Camp program](https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/serapprocher-connect/ltc-dlc) introduces you and your family to the basics of camping in Canada’s beautiful natural settings. Through overnight experiences and daytime workshops, you’ll learn camping skills like how to set up a tent, plan a camping menu and cook outdoors.



MEC and the Canadian Wilderness Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) are working together to create community support for conservation in Rouge National Urban Park and around the GTA. As a chapter of CPAWS, [Wildlands League](https://wildlandsleague.org/)’s mission is to protect the natural world that supports us with a connected network of wild lands and protected natural areas, and to promote recreation and resource use in ways that are sustainable for nature, communities and the economy.



MEC partners with [Parkbus](https://parkbus.ca/index) to help thousands of Canadians visit national and provincial parks from major cities across Canada – including a free shuttle from Toronto to Rouge National Urban Park. From day trips and family camping weekends to wilderness expeditions, Parkbus offers accessible transportation options to help city dwellers connect with nature.



[Healing in Nature: Bereavement Network](http://bereavementnetwork.ca/) (HNBN) is a non-for-profit project that provides grief support for youth and young adults through nature walks. They host walking groups on local trails for youth and young adults who are grieving, including newcomers to the community and refugees.



### Grants and donations
Our grant program has given tens of millions of dollars to conservation and the outdoor community in Canada – everything from product donations and advocacy projects to activity funding and land acquisitions. Events

MEC North York is part of the co-op’s growing portfolio of high-performance green buildings. All MEC facilities are designed to meet these performance standards as part of our internal green building program.

The building incorporates key elements of MEC’s renewed architectural brand, including a distinctive floating canopy to mark the store’s entrance and wood-infused interiors to define the store and display merchandise.

Like all MEC buildings, MEC North York is operationally carbon neutral. The store is designed to be almost 50% more energy efficient than a comparable commercial building, based on Model National Energy Code for Buildings [MNECB] 1997.

Green building features includes a high-performance building envelope and heating, cooling and ventilation (HVAC) system, as well as extensive LED lighting. In addition:

- The high-performance building envelope includes structural insulated panels (SIPs), which allow for superior insulation and energy savings.
- The HVAC system features a heat recovery ventilator with underfloor air distribution, and energy-efficient heat pumps for heating and cooling.
- Energy-efficient LED lighting is installed in 80% of the retail areas.

MEC North York is spread over two floors, with a feature stairwell connecting the two levels. The space is marked by a saw-tooth roof lined with clerestory windows that flood the retail floor with natural light.

MEC North York meets the Tier 1 level of the Toronto Green Standard (TGS).

When we build a store, we try to recycle or reuse buildings and/or building materials wherever possible. There were fewer opportunities to do this at our Calgary site than at our other stores, but we’ve found ways to improve where we can. Here are some of the green features:****

- To cut down on materials required, there are minimal floor and ceiling coverings.
- To let in as much natural light as possible, we have energy-efficient double-paned windows.
- Since there’s not a lot of natural light in this building, we use energy efficient fluorescent tubes for base lighting and have replaced some of the accent lighting with energy saving LED fixtures.

Located on the way to northern Ontario’s outdoor playgrounds, MEC Barrie opened in 2010. Compared to a conventional retail building about the same size, it was made to be 70% more efficient than those built during the same period. Here are some of the green features:

- A high-efficiency building envelope reduces the amount of energy needed, and has significantly more thermal insulation than conventional buildings.
- The wood, concrete and steel structure is designed to be disassembled and repurposed when the building reaches the end of its useful life.
- To cut down on the amount of energy required for heating and cooling, a concrete slab floor acts as a thermal reservoir which is warmed or cooled by a geo-exchange system that pumps fluid through embedded piping.
- The sawtooth-shaped roof is oriented so the less-intense northern light can help naturally light the store. The more-intense southern light hits the long side of each “tooth” and gets captured by a photovoltaic array.
- Many high clerestory windows at roofline reduce the need for artificial lighting. The lights we do have turn down or off automatically when there’s enough natural light to save energy (for both the lights and the energy needed to cool heat from the bulbs).
- A solar thermal collector on the roof preheats hot water used in the kitchen and bathrooms. The residual heat from this grey water is partially captured and used to preheat other potable water.
- The combo of low-flow fixtures and grey water usage cuts potable water requirements by half.
- Captured precipitation (stormwater) provides water for all non-potable uses, such as toilets. Stormwater gets retained and infiltrated on site and won’t discharge water to municipal storm drains (except under extraordinary circumstances, like an enormous storm).
- Landscaping uses non-invasive species that encourage bird and insect populations, and doesn’t need irrigation except for in drought conditions.

MEC Winnipeg opened in 2002. Before we moved in, it was the site of three buildings – two of them too dilapidated to be occupied. The buildings were carefully dismantled, and the materials were meticulously inventoried and used to build new sections of the store. About 95% of the existing buildings got reused or recycled in some form.

MEC Winnipeg is LEED Gold certified, and was the second retail building in Canada to meet the national C2000 Green Building Standard (the first was MEC Ottawa). All the energy-saving features in the store make it 65% more efficient than the standards set out in the Model National Energy Code. Here are some of the green features:

- Almost 4000 tonnes of material in the existing buildings was diverted from the landfill.
- All structural materials were reclaimed, including the brick and wood floor, joists, exterior masonry, cast iron columns and steel beams.
- To cut down on new materials required, the ceiling’s exposed, the floors are uncarpeted, and we used minimum drywall.
- Composting toilets provide fertilizer for our rooftop garden. Plus they cut down waste water volume by more than half (which saves 73 cubic meters of water each year).
- CO2 sensors keep a good balance of fresh air coming in, so energy isn’t wasted in heating or cooling.
- To reduce heat loss and energy consumption, outer walls are insulated to an R value of 30, more than twice the R12 called for in the building code.
- A central skylight means we don’t need as much artificial lighting. The lights we do have are high-efficiency with motion sensors to turn them off if no one’s around.
- The green roof provides evaporative cooling and also helps insulate building, which cuts down on energy for heating and cooling.

MEC Victoria is in a registered heritage building, known as the Vogue building, that was built as a hotel in 1892. This timber post-and-beam structure has a concrete front and fine architectural detailing, which we modified to expose wood features and improve natural light. It’s a distinctive retail space we’re proud of, and it opened as a store in 2006. Here are some of the green features:****

- Moved into an existing building, which saved on construction materials and the embodied energy costs.
- Used regionally sourced materials where we could to reduce transport emissions.
- Reclaimed wood and strawboard, approved by the Forest Stewardship Council, is used in many displays and fitting rooms.
- Decorative wood boards in fixtures come from reclaimed submerged trees, which are harvested from flooded reservoirs to reduce demand for living trees.
- Marmoleum flooring (made of renewable materials) is used in the lunchroom.
- Carpet tile in the meeting room and offices has recycled content and low VOC (volatile organic compounds).
