As much as we love flashing a route or the view from a portaledge, our favourite thing about climbing is the incredible community. We’re proud to be the destination for Canadian climbers since we hit the scene in the early 70s, but providing top-tier gear for crags and gyms is just one tiny part of our commitment. Before the days of indoor gyms, bouldering mats, stick clips or cams, we were climbers. We’ve cleaned up crags, built trails (also plenty of outhouses) and been access advocates for bluffs and mountainsides across Canada. We’ve championed new brands, field tested products and worked with pro climbers (shout out to MEC Climbing Ambassadors [Sean McColl](/explore/sean-mccoll) and [Emma Contaoe](/explore/emma-contaoe)) to get the details right. We’ve been giving back to the outdoor community since 1987, and we’ll continue to support organizations in their quest to get more people outside, like this year’s [Tommy Caldwell Talks: Ride for the Planet](/article/tommy-caldwell-recap) event, which raised **$5994.70** for **Climbers’ Access Society of British Columbia** (CASBC) and **Van Queer Climbers**. 

This year in celebration of Global Climb Day, we’re hosting our very own **Rock the Climb** event. We’re pumped to be partnering with local climbing groups, brands and athletes to celebrate all things climbing in a few MEC store locations across the country. This month we caught up with some awesome climbing organizations and individuals working hard behind the scenes to protect wild spaces, bring outdoor access to local communities and improve the natural spaces where we get to play, crush and top out. 

As climbing continues to grow in popularity our crags and mountainsides can become crowded, with approach trails and access areas experiencing heavier traffic every year. Luckily there are some incredible folks dedicated to preserving these natural spaces for future generations of crushers to come, while building easier access for today’s climbers all over Canada. We sat down with leaders and volunteers from these climbing orgs to learn more about what goes into preserving and promoting access to our favourite climbing spots – no surprise, it’s a LOT of work.

# Promoting climbing access 
Safety, liability and environmental impact are three of the primary concerns that always come first when negotiating climbing access with land managers and owners. Since climbing orgs typically do not own the land where we’re climbing, establishing proper management plans and collaborating with all stakeholders is just as important as pushing hard for our climbers. As crags become more popular, we sometimes see restrictions and regulations put in place to ensure the natural environment is not disrupted. That’s why it’s so important to respect closing conditions, access conditions, any crag code of ethics and of course, following the [Leave No Trace principles](en/explore/leave-no-trace-canada). After all, climbing in these incredible spaces is a privilege, and we want to ensure future generations get to enjoy chalking up walls and topping out boulders for generations to come.

Some recent success stories in climbing stewardship? “There has been a lot of construction along the Mamquam and Indian FSRs recently. We’ve been able to express the importance of this area to climbers and as a result the parking pullouts have been enlarged, and the dust mitigation work that has been done has also had a positive impact on the North Wall boulders,” says Alex, the chair of Squamish Access Society (SAS) in BC.

# Preserving climbing access 
Every time we haul our crash pads, flash a route or hey, take a whipper or two, we have the folks doing all the work behind the scenes to thank for the preservation of our favourite fun zones. As we all know, climbers make excellent land ambassadors, just ask the **Ontario Alliance of Climbers** (OAC), who have had local climbers participate in clean ups, ecology studies and funded graffiti removal in parks so they can enjoy ‘the glen’. CASBC also hosts trail days, stewardship days, bolting clinics and trail clinics to help locals get involved and feel connected to the care of their local crags. [WAG bags](/product/5027-310/ii-disposable-bag-for-solid-waste) provided by SAS has also helped keep our crags clean from human waste, especially when you're so far from a washroom.  

Sharing the know-how for caring for the planet is crucial to everyone being able to do their part in the outdoors – every little bit counts!

# Route development and maintenance 
Nothing beats a community effort, but sometimes there are some really rad individuals making change happen on their own. At **The Association of Bow Valley Area Rockclimbers** (TABVAR) individual volunteers create new routes and they’re reimbursed for any expenses on routes that are top priority for the local community. Heads up, if you’re planning to develop routes in the Rockies, you better get comfy wielding a crowbar – routes in that area require a LOT of cleaning. Mainly volunteers also work on retrobolting and re-bolting existing routes, which always takes priority over new developments. For our climbers based in Quebec, you can become a certified route setter with the **Fédération québécoise de la montagne et de l'escalade** (FQME) by getting involved with your local climbing club and taking the necessary training. This way you’ll be well-equipped to clean up routes and establish new ones with all the necessary training. 


Notice a bolt or anchor that could use replacing in the Squamish area? [Submit a report](https://squamishaccess.ca/report-a-bad-bolt-or-anchor) on the **Squamish Access Society** (SAS) website and they’ll do their best to rebolt what they can. SAS also works on bringing new life to older crags that may have fallen into disrepair. More operational crags means less crowds at each climb spot, which helps alleviate some of the environmental impact that comes with heavy traffic (oh, and more time on the wall for you).  

To ensure the quality of new and existing routes, TABVAR ensures all routes adhere to the following regulations: 

- The route should be safe for an on-sight lead climb by someone who is competent at the grade 

- The route should be cleaned of all loose rock 

- Pitons and nylon webbing are not acceptable as permanent fixtures on sport routes 

- Avoid squeezing in routes close to or which interfere with established climbs 

- Creating holds or attaching imported holds is contrary to accepted local practice 

- Avoid building routes that create rockfall hazards over established routes or trails

# Community involvement and support  
Want to get involved with your local climbing org? Reach out! Send a message on socials or through their website to join as a member, or you can always donate to keep funding incredible initiatives and projects that put climbers first. This funding goes directly to rebolting missions, bathroom maintenance, trail improvements and tons more. Volunteering for trail maintenance, crag clean-ups, events and education sessions are also great ways to get to know other climbers and show your appreciation for the spaces where we get to send it. You can always connect with your local climbing club for more ways to give back to your community, chances are they’re already involved in some cool projects. 

**Fun fact:** As part of a community involvement initiative, TAVBAR hosted a contest where they auctioned off the naming rights for a new route that a member had put up. The winning donation? $2,500! And so the route “Wish You Were Here” was born, paying homage to the naming convention of the wall which features personal history moments and song names (this one named after the Pink Floyd song). 

# Future projects and missions
Continuing to strengthen local climbing organizations through funding and legal support is the main focus for a few of our climbing orgs. “Shade shelters at some popular crags, expansion and upkeep of the WAG bag program, continuation of our anchor and bolt replacement program, and replacement of some bridges to access climbing areas in the Paradise Valley area,” says Alex, chair of SAS. “Ensuring the ultimate lifespan of the existing hardware in the Bow Valley,” is a priority for TABVAR. As more climbers are getting outside and gyms gain traction and popularity, representing local climbers will only continue to grow as a top priority. “We see our role expanding to ensure that their voices and concerns are heard,” says TABVAR.

Our MEC climbing community is like no other

Celebrating Global Climb Day 2024

If you hear the phrase, [“Leave No Trace,”](https://leavenotrace.ca/) you probably think about picking up trash on the trails. And you’re right, packing out your garbage is part of Leave No Trace’s third principle: dispose of waste properly. But there is a lot more to Leave No Trace than just trash!

Leave No Trace is a set of seven principles that help us minimize our impact when we spend time outdoors. They include pre-trip actions like how to [plan ahead and prepare](https://leavenotrace.ca/services/1-plan-ahead-and-prepare/) as well as on-trail tips for how to [travel and camp on durable surfaces](https://leavenotrace.ca/the-seven-principles-of-leave-no-trace/) or [respect wildlife.](https://leavenotrace.ca/services/6-respect-wildlife/) And of course info on how to [dispose of waste properly](https://leavenotrace.ca/services/3-dispose-of-waste-properly/). Cleaning up granola bar wrappers and sandwich bags is obvious, but disposing of other kinds of waste can be confusing. 

## What is trash?
To start with, what is trash? I don’t have to tell you that your granola bar wrapper or your water bottle are trash. But are orange peels, peanut shells, and apple cores trash? You might be surprised to find out that even though some items are biodegradable, they are trash and you should pack them out with you. A helpful saying to remember is: “if it doesn’t grow there, it doesn’t go there.” It can take up to 2 years for an orange peel to decompose. In the meantime, it can ruin the natural beauty of outdoor spaces and attract wildlife. 

What about dog poop? Is it trash? While dogs might be animals, they certainly aren’t wild and they aren’t native to our North American ecosystem. Domestic dog poop contains bacteria and parasites that can spread to wildlife. The nitrogen and phosphorus in dog feces can also cause algae blooms in waterways that damage aquatic habitats. Scoop up your pups poop and pack it out with you. To help with the smell, you can drop the doggy bag in a small sealed container, like an old peanut butter jar.


## How to pack out human waste

When you gotta go, you gotta go. But what should you do if you’re out on the trails nowhere near an outhouse? The first thing to do is head 70 paces (about 60 m/200ft) away from the trail, campground, or water sources. Next, use a [trowel](https://www.mec.ca/en/product/6026-684/aluminum-trowel) to dig a cat hole 15 cm/6” deep. Make your deposit, then cover the hole (known as a ‘cat hole’). Over time, your poop will decompose in the soil and it won’t contaminate water sources, trails, or campgrounds. In some high-use or ecological sensitive areas, you may need to pack out your waste in a [Wag Bag](https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5027-310/ii-disposable-bag-for-solid-waste). These bags keep waste and smells contained until you can get to a garbage can. 

While it may decompose in a cat hole, toilet paper will do so very slowly, so it’s better to pack it out in a sealed bag. If you use toilet paper to pee, pack that out too. Please don’t leave it lying on the ground. It can take up to a year for toilet paper to decompose. After you finish going to the bathroom, be sure to use hand sanitizer to clean your hands. When people get sick on a camping trip, they often blame contaminated water, but the culprit is usually poor hygiene.

If you are menstruating, you’ll need to [pack out pads and tampons in a sealed plastic bag](https://www.instagram.com/reel/C9fXON9upPr/). They don’t decompose, so you can’t leave them in an outhouse or cat hole. My pack out bag is a ziploc covered in duct tape so you can’t see what’s inside. If you use a menstrual cup or disc, you can dispose of blood in a 15 cm-deep cat hole that is 70 paces from trails, campground, or water sources.

How to Dispose of Waste on the Trails the Leave No Trace Way

Imagine a future where spending time outside, learning, exploring and playing, is an everyday activity for our kids. To celebrate bringing this new collection into MEC stores, we caught up with Take Me Outside (TMO) Executive Director and Founder, Colin Harris.


### Can you give us a quick backstory on how TMO began? Where did the idea spark? 

**Colin:** It all started back in 2011 when I fulfilled a lifelong dream of running across Canada – more than 7,600 km from St. John’s, NL to Victoria, BC. Along the way, we visited 80 schools and met with almost 20,000 students, talking with them about the importance of finding balance between the amount of time they spend in front of screens and the amount of time they spend outside. The final day of my cross-Canada run was in late October. To celebrate the end of the journey and to continue the momentum of raising awareness on this important issue, Take Me Outside Day was established. This campaign, along with other programs and initiatives that have since been established, are at the heart of TMO’s mission to have more learners and educators strengthen their relationship with the outdoors. 

### Why is this work so important? 

**Colin:** A connection to nature and active time outside are essential for healthy childhood development. Making outdoor learning an integral part of every student’s day can increase their overall health and well-being, including their emotional regulation, physical agility, self-esteem, creativity, social emotional skills, resiliency and much more! It’s also highly beneficial for teachers and educators, as they can experience an increase in health and well-being and a decrease in stress after spending time outside. 

### There’s a new book by Jonathan Haidt called The Anxious Generation on the topic of the screen time and smartphones. How does this relate to your work and what implications does this research have for teachers and parents? 

**Colin:** While TMO is focused on learning that can happen outdoors as part of teaching practices, part of the push for this comes from the current imbalance of screen time and the onslaught of technology that children are exposed to daily. While there is a time and place for all the amazing things technology can offer, we must critically examine how these devices and apps are being used with children, and how often. The evidence-based benefits of more time outside are growing, and so our work is trying to address these benefits through a better practice of balance.

### For teachers and parents looking to implement outdoor learning with their kids or students, do you have any resources you can share? 

**Colin:** Our [resource hub](https://takemeoutside.ca/resource-directory/educational-resources/) is a great place for educators and parents to explore resources to implement outdoor learning. Resources can be filtered by region, age group, theme and more. We are regularly updating and adding to our resource directory, so we encourage parents and educators to check back often! 
### With help from other outdoor learning partners, you focus on three central themes. Can you share a bit more on these and the important role they play? 

**Colin:** Outdoor learning can be a transformative way to respectfully and authentically integrate Indigenous perspectives & knowledge into every child’s education, which is a significant component of Truth and Reconciliation, healing and justice on Turtle Island. Providing daily opportunities for learners to move, play and explore outdoors, surrounded by nature, significantly contributes to positive benefits in their overall health and wellbeing. In today’s world, climate change and environmental education is more essential than ever. We support outdoor learning rooted in climate justice that provides inspiring, hopeful approaches to climate action and living more sustainably for folks of all ages. 

### Is there a specific initiative that you’re really excited about in 2024? 

**Colin:** Take Me Outside Day on October 23rd! We’re looking forward to engaging more than half a million educators and learners for a week of learning outside through themes of Indigenous Knowledge, Climate and the Environment and Health and Wellbeing! ### What is the most impactful piece of feedback you’ve received on the work you do? 

**Colin:** We received feedback from an elementary education centre in Ottawa, Ontario who told us they, “love this event (Take Me Outside Day) as it is a reminder to teachers to use the outdoors as another classroom for the students.” That their students, “continue to make discoveries and form relationships with other students in outdoor experiential learning spaces.” Receiving that kind of feedback is always impactful and inspiring.

In its 15-year history, MEC is only the second organization to win this award! 

Our mission in the outdoors has always gone beyond supplying gear for getting outside. We’re dedicated to providing programs and initiatives that teach crucial outdoor skills and safety training in the backcountry. As the presenting sponsor of Avalanche Canada’s [Avalanche Skill Training (AST) program](en/explore/avalanche-canada), MEC provides funding to keep the curriculum updated with the latest in avalanche research, tools and techniques. **Fun fact**: 12,000 students learn avalanche safety skills through this program every year.
