What to expect
Ever heard of the epic Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California? It hosts the world’s largest consumer bike expo, and it’s creating a Canadian edition for the first time ever. Whether you’re a serious roadie, a weekend trail rider or a family full of little rippers, you’ll find fellow bike fanatics (and maybe your next bike) at this event. Check out:
- Lots of races and rides on dirt and road, including XC and enduro courses, a road team stage race, the Canadian hill climbing championships and the Grind KOM
- Shiny new bikes and gear from 200+ cycling brands
- More than 200 demo bikes
- Kids activities, live music, craft beer and local food
It’s a packed weekend, and MEC has picked a few events to support that we think are going to be extra entertaining. Don’t miss the:
XC Short Course (a.k.a. 20-minute sufferfest)
XCC is the newest addition to the cross-country world. The event is a 1–1.5km course that sweeps through the lower mountain and village, and one that you’ll definitely want to watch if you’re not riding. It’s a mass start with lots of sprinting and action to keep things entertaining for spectators. Post-ride, riders can relive their race and let the sweat dry off in the MEC recovery lounge.
- July 5
- Age categories and mass start at 4pm
- Elite women start at 6pm
- Elite men start at 6:30pm
XC 3-hour relay
Held on the same trail as the XC Short Course, and designed for anyone who wants to challenge themselves on a mountain bike. Ride it solo or bring your riding buddies along and sign up as a team. Singletrack riders of all levels can tackle it with a PB in mind or get serious about racing.
- July 6 at 8:30am
- Single, two-person or four-person teams
All the best parts of mountain biking in one event: untimed uphills, timed descents. This event is the only Enduro World Series Qualifier event in eastern Canada; by racing in this event you can qualify for the Enduro World Series. You’ll tour across the mountain and ride some of the toughest trails back to back, and link in trails that are usually closed to the public.
- July 7 from 7am–3pm
Be sure to check out the the expo area to see what’s new – there’ll be 200+ brands, craft breweries, places to eat, bike demos and a kid’s zone. Stop by the MEC booth for a shot at our spin-the-bike-wheel prizes and to demo 2019 Intense bikes. Other brands like Kask, Maxxis, Shimano, Pirelli, Clif Bar, Hydra Flask and Osprey will be there with booths too.
- July 5, 9am–6:30pm
- July 6: 9am–6:30pm
- July 7: 9am–5pm
