Double ropes (half ropes) must be used in pairs and are clipped into alternate pieces of protection. They must never be clipped into the same piece of protection. Although more difficult to manage and slightly heavier than a single rope system, double ropes reduce rope drag, making them an excellent choice for alpine and mixed routes that wander. They are sometimes used individually for glacier walking and ski touring. They are a popular choice in the mountains because there is less chance of slicing or seriously damaging both ropes. They also offer the advantage of full-length rappels if you are forced to retreat.
