MSR MicroFilter Water Filter

  • Available prices $110.00

Show Description

A lightweight, compact, and comprehensive water filter for the weekend or occasional user. A fibreglass-based main element makes the unit effective against protozoa and all bacteria, including Campylobacter, larger than 0.2 microns. Construction emphasizes convenient operation, and replacement of modular sections, rather than access to user maintainable parts.

  • Long pump handle provides convenient, easy pumping, delivers water on both the up and down strokes, and folds away for storage and transport.
  • A 75-micron, mesh stainless steel prefilter removes large debris at the mouth of the intake hose and can be combined with the provided foam float.
  • Fibreglass labyrinth main element is rated to 0.2 microns and can be easily scrubbed clean when clogged. Filter life is 757 litres under normal use, although this can be reduced markedly if used with turbid or silty water. A coloured scrim indicates need for cartridge replacement.
  • An activated carbon stage, a component part of the main element, reduces concentrations of chemicals such as iodine, and reduces tastes and odours.
  • A pressure relief valve prevents filter rupture in the event of clogging. Activation of this valve indicates a need for either slower pumping or element cleaning.
  • 1.25L per minute flow rate under optimum, clear water conditions.
  • Lightweight plastic body and component parts.
  • Comes with two different-coloured silicone hoses, water bottle adapter (for most wide-mouth and narrow-mouth bottles), and a carrying bag.

Filter type

Water can be treated using various types of filters, chemicals or non-chemical purification methods, or a combination. Filters on their own will not remove viruses as they are too small.

Silica depth filter w/carbon core
Output 1L/min
Dimensions 19 x 5cm
Cartridge life

The life of the filter cartridge is based on the quantity of water you can treat before the cartridge is no longer effective. This does not apply to battery operated or chemical filter systems.

Filter size

A 0.5 micron or smaller filters protozoa and some large bacteria; 0.2 micron or smaller filters smaller bacteria such as campylobacter.

Effective against protozoa

Protozoa are larger than one micron and include cryptosporidium and giardia.

Effective against viruses

Most viruses are in the 1.0 micron size range, but they can be as small as 0.002 microns.

Effective against particulate

Particulate consists of very small bits and pieces such as dirt or bugs.

Effective against bacteria

Bacteria can cause illnesses such as diarrhea and dysentery and are about 1.0 micron in size, although some can be as small as 0.2 microns.
