Camp is a brand steeped in history. With its beginnings in the Italian Alps in the late 1880s, it’s grown from the work of a single dedicated blacksmith to a company with international recognition. Renowned for their craftsmanship and innovation, they produce primarily climbing gear and specialize in metalwork.
Camp’s earliest products were solid wrought iron, forged by founder Nicola Codega. It was Nicola’s son, Antonio, who took Camp for its first foray into climbing equipment, taking up his father’s craft to forge ice axes for Italy’s Alpine troops in 1920.
Today, generations later in the family business, metalwork remains Camp’s claim to fame. Aluminum and steel are common in their products, in everything from their [carabiners and quickdraws]/en/products/climbing/climbing-gear/rock-hardware/carabiners-and-quickdraws?brand=Camp) to their aid climbing gear.
In addition to the recognition Camp gets for their high quality, they are praised widely for a number of major innovations they’ve brought to the climbing gear industry. Among these include creating the first ice-axe with an aluminum shaft and the first “ultralight” carabiner, weighing in at a mere 33 grams (and getting lighter ever since).
Today, Camp gear is popular across several types of climbing. Their selection of crampons are a great choice for mountaineering, and their ice tools, axes and accessories call back to the company’s roots in the Italian mountains.
