Tackle the trail with women’s hiking boots

Backpacking boots are ideal for tough terrain and off-trail adventures. They’re fantastic ankle support and stability, making them suitable for hikers of all sizes. A good pair of women’s hiking boots feature deep lugs, stiff midsoles and protective elements like rubber toecaps or full rubber rands. Typically constructed from leather or a combination of leather and GORE-TEX waterproof fabric, they help keep your feet dry while crossing streams or navigating snowy patches. However, high-cut hiking boots can be relatively stiff and heavy, and might require some time to break in. To narrow down your options, read our guide to how to choose hiking boots. You’ll find a wide selection of hiking boots at MEC from brands like Merrell and Salomon.

Hiking boot features

The soles of a good pair of women’s hiking boots are always rubber, but the upper section of the boot can be made up of several different materials. Each material determines how water-resistant, breathable, durable and lightweight those boots will be. Full-gain leather boots are durable as well as abrasion and water resistant, but are typically heavier and the least breathable. Many women’s hiking boots have waterproof-breathable membranes in the inner and outer layers of the boot, usually made with tech like GORE-TEX or eVent. These boots are great to have if you’ll be encountering rain or deep puddles on your hike.

How to fit women’s hiking boots

When you're ready to try on boots or shoes, visit your local MEC store and let one of our skilled staffers help you out. For the most precise sizing, have your feet measured in-store. If you’re unable to visit a store, use a tape measure to determine your foot length in centimeters, then refer to the size charts on mec.ca. Make sure to stand while measuring your feet for greater accuracy. Remember that sizes can differ between brands, so your usual size might not always be the best fit. Most women’s hiking shoes and boots are ready to wear right out of the box. If they aren’t comfortable on day one, they will never be, but you’ll still need to break them in a bit. This is especially important for stiffer day hiking and backpacking boots. Start by wearing them around your home or office, then for short walks (try a mall or community centre if you want to try them indoors beyond your living room). Gradually increase the mileage and weight you carry.
