Go off-trail with backcountry skiing gear
So, what exactly is backcountry skiing? In essence, it’s about earning your turns—trekking up snow-covered terrain ("skinning up") so you can carve your way back down. Unlike resort skiing, backcountry adventures take you off the beaten path to pristine landscapes. There's nothing quite like reaching a snowy summit, taking in breathtaking views, and then enjoying a descent free from crowds and groomed runs. You’ll find backcountry skis, boots, helmets, clothing, avalanche safety gear and so much more at MEC, all from epic brands like MEC Label, Arc’teryx, K2 and so much more.
Gearing up the right way
First off, a ski touring checklist is essential if you’re getting into backcountry skiing. Unlike a typical day at the resort, backcountry skiing involves more gear and preparation. A waterproof-breathable jacket and pants are essential to protect against changing weather conditions. Insulating mid-layers and warm base layers are necessary to maintain warmth in colder temperatures, while moisture-wicking ski socks keep your feet dry. Add to that a sturdy pair of gloves, a helmet and ski goggles to ensure you stay comfortable and safe. A dedicated backcountry ski backpack is another must-have. These backpacks are designed with specialized compartments for avalanche safety gear—like a beacon, probe and shovel—and plenty of room for extra layers, food, water and other essentials. Staying organized in the backcountry is critical to avoid wasting time searching for gear during a quick transition or emergency situation.
Choosing your backcountry ski style
The most obvious and important piece of equipment for backcountry skiing is your skis—along with boots, bindings, poles, and climbing skins. As you explore how to choose backcountry skis, consider the style of skiing that appeals to you most. Are you more interested in alpine touring, with its mix of ascents and enjoyable descents? Or does freeride skiing call to you, with its emphasis on challenging terrain and deep powder? Your choice will influence the type of skis, bindings and boots that best suit your needs. Each style has unique gear considerations, and it’s worth discussing your options with knowledgeable staff who can guide you based on the terrain and snow conditions you plan to tackle. Picking the right setup can make a significant difference in your backcountry experience, turning a challenging outing into an unforgettable adventure.
