Stay safe on the slopes with ski and snow helmets

When you’re planning on flying down the mountain during the height of snowsports season, making sure you’re protected should be a top priority. In fact, ensuring your head is well-protected might just be the most important decision you make before hitting the slopes. Luckily, MEC has you covered with a range of ski and snow helmets designed to keep your noggin safe while you shred all season long. Whether you’re skiing, snowboarding or just exploring the backcountry, you’ll find reliable helmets from trusted brands like Smith, K2, Salomon and more. These ski and snow helmets are designed wit your safety in mind, letting you focus on the fun.

Keeping the cranium covered

A good ski and snow helmet is your first line of defense against injury on the mountain. A hardshell helmet can absorb the impact and protect your head from serious injury if you miscalculate your landing or just how fast you’re going. To enhance your protection, look for helmets equipped with MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System). This advanced technology helps reduce rotational forces on the brain during angled impacts, a common type of crash in snowsports. MIPS helmets offer an extra layer of protection, dispersing the energy from a fall and minimizing the risk of serious injury. While no one ever plans to take a bad fall, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Sizing and fit

Your best bet for choosing the right ski and snow helmet for you is to visit your local MEC store and try them on. Your helmet should snug, but not too tight. Give your head a shake, and if it rocks back and forth, your fit is too loose. Bringing your ski goggles is another great idea when trying on a helmet. There shouldn’t be any space between the top of your goggles and the helmet, so make sure it’s a snug fit so that the helmet fits nicely with the top of the goggles. The chinstrap or buckle should fit snugly under your chin, but loose enough so that you don’t feel choked (ack!).

Ready for adventure

Helmets are just one part of a complete snowsports safety kit. Along with protecting your head, it's essential to be prepared for other potential risks on the mountain, especially in backcountry terrain. If you're planning to venture off-site, take a moment to brush up on avalanche safety so you know exactly what you’re getting into with your crew.
