MEC and Beedie unveil plans to develop new flagship store in Olympic Village
Mixed-use development with 45,000-sq-ft store would support 400,000 local members to be active
Vancouver B.C. (October 7, 2015) MEC, the outdoor retailer that embodies many Vancouverites’ passion for active lifestyles, is joining Beedie Development Group to unveil plans to develop a new flagship store in Olympic Village. The proposal would see a three-storey mixed-use green building of approximately 60,000-square-feet developed at 2nd Avenue and Quebec Street on the south-east corner of the False Creek neighbourhood.
“Relocating MEC Vancouver nearby our existing location boils down to having a bigger, better and more accessible store to serve our 400,000-plus members who live in the Greater Vancouver Region,” said CEO David Labistour. “It’s an opportune time now to plan the move, as the end our existing lease is in sight.”
MEC’s development proposal for the Olympic Village site, which is owned by Beedie Development Group, will be filed with the city planning department today. The co-op’s proposal calls for a retail store totalling 45,000-square-feet on two levels. Office space on the third floor would include a mix of MEC and sublease spaces as well as a community space.
The design embodies MEC’s signature green building form and seeks to contribute to sustainable urban development in South-East False Creek. The development is designed to achieve a minimum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification.
Numerous sightlines into the store and a wide pedestrian boulevard on both 2nd Avenue and Quebec Street promise to animate the space. An undulating green roof that captures and manages water and tasteful use of materials will characterize the building.
“We have owned this gateway site since 2007 and wanted to ensure any future development would enhance the area, » said Ryan Beedie, President of Beedie Development Group. « Olympic Village is recognized as one of the most sustainable neighbourhoods in the world, making MEC the perfect fit. »
Labistour added, “Outdoor activity pervades Olympic Village, and great opportunities exist there for synergy with the MEC brand.”
MEC’s new store in Olympic Village will replace its store at 130 West Broadway, which the Vancouver-based retailer has occupied since 1995. That building is nearing the end of its useful life. MEC’s lease term for the West Broadway building is also nearing its end.
Proscenium Architecture & Interiors, which designed MEC’s award-winning North Vancouver store and its new head office facility on Great Northern Way, is leading the development application on behalf of MEC and Beedie Development Group.
It is anticipated that approvals for the project will take up to one year, with construction scheduled to begin in early 2017 and continue for 18 months. By that timeline, MEC’s new flagship store in Olympic Village would open in mid-2018.
