About Buck

Buck was founded by a young blacksmith named Hoyt Buck in 1902. Hoyt Buck was looking for a better way to temper steel so it would hold an edge longer and through trial and error he created the first Buck knife. In the early years of production each Buck knife was made by hand, using work-out file blades as raw material. The Buck company was passed on to the next of kin who have continued Hoyt Buck’s tradition of making quality knives that are reliable, trustworthy, and of course sharp.

Buck and sustainability

In 2001 Buck created a strategic plan called Lean manufacturing to boost sustainability. This plan included several initiatives, such as:

  • Aiming to eliminate waste, and increase quality
  • Stopping the overproduction of knives so less emissions are used during production
  • Improving the transportation links between factories and consumers to reduce their carbon footprint and make production more efficient
