Tents: Your home away from home
When it comes to getting a good night’s sleep in the great outdoors, owning the right gear makes a major difference. A good camping tent is essential for a comfy and enjoyable night in the woods, but where might one start when buying one? At MEC, our large collection of camping shelters and tents from reliable outdoor brands like Big Agnes, MSR, The North Face, Nemo and our very own MEC Label lineup are sure to provide cozy protection and a home away from home. Check out our article on how to choose a tent or keep reading to learn the basics.
The many types of tents
There are a few different factors that go into choosing what kind of pop-up tents you’re wanting to buy, so consider what your outdoor escapade will look like. Will you be driving or hiking to your campsite? Will it be just you, or is the whole family coming along?
Frontcountry
If you’re planning to drive to your campsite, you’ll have lots of options for space. Car camping tents, also known as frontcountry camping tents, are large, spacious and come with tons of headroom. They’re easy to set up and can house plenty of people but are heavier and bulkier than most, so they aren’t recommended for packing in a backpack to carry a far distance.
Backcountry
Backcountry camping tents (also known as backpacking tents) are more lightweight, pack down small in your bag and are easier to carry over long distances. They can also be used for bikepacking, canoe trips and more. However, these tents are usually smaller on the inside, so be sure of how many people are in your party.
Winter tents
Winter and expedition tents are shelters that are essential if you plan on camping in the snow. Also known as 4-season tents, they’re more durable for facing bad weather like heavy snow and strong winds.
Count your crew
Each tent on MEC’s website has a capacity rating that shows how many people can fit into each tent. The capacity number usually means the number of sleeping bags you can fit inside the tent, and too many people can make things crowded with not enough space for your gear. For car camping, a good rule of thumb is to buy a tent that’s rated to fit one or two more people than you plan to sleep. If you’re bringing your dog camping or a growing family, that’s something to keep in mind as well.

Frequently asked questions
What size tent do I need for 4 people?
A 4-person tent will technically fit four sleeping bags side by side, but if you want extra room for gear or a bit more elbow space, consider sizing up to a 5- or 6-person tent. For car camping, more space means more comfort.
What is the best tent for winter camping?
Winter camping calls for a 4-season or expedition tent. These are built with stronger poles, more durable fabrics and lower ventilation to handle snow, wind and cold temperatures. Look for tents with reinforced construction and vestibules for gear storage.
How do I set up a tent properly?
Every tent is a little different, but most follow the same steps: lay out the tent footprint or groundsheet, stake down the corners, insert and secure the poles, then attach the rainfly. Make sure the tent is taut and ventilated to reduce condensation.
How do I waterproof my tent?
Start by sealing seams with seam sealer (if they’re not already taped), then refresh the DWR (durable water repellent) coating on the rainfly with a spray-on treatment. Make sure your tent is clean and dry before applying. Regular maintenance helps keep your tent performing its best.
Buyer’s guide for tents
How to choose the right tent for camping
Choosing the right tent for camping comes down to where you're going, how you're getting there and who’s coming along. For drive-in campsites, roomy frontcountry tents offer comfort, space and easy setup. If you’re backpacking, look for lightweight, compact options that won’t weigh you down on the trail.
Size
Tent sizes are based on the number of people they can sleep, but a “4-person tent” fits four sleeping pads shoulder-to-shoulder. For more comfort, size up—especially if you're bringing pets, kids or extra gear. If you’re car camping, you’ve got more flexibility to go bigger without worrying about weight.
Season
Most tents are 3-season, built for spring through fall and able to handle rain and wind. For snow and extreme conditions, a 4-season or winter tent has stronger poles and less mesh to retain warmth. Think about when and where you’ll camp to find the right balance of ventilation and protection.
Material
Tent fabrics affect durability, weather protection and breathability. Look for fly and floor materials made from ripstop nylon or polyester with a waterproof coating. Mesh panels help with airflow and reduce condensation. Higher-denier fabrics tend to last longer, especially on high-wear areas like the floor.
Weight
If you’re hiking, biking or paddling to your site, weight matters. Backpacking tents are lighter and more compact than frontcountry models, often using minimalist designs and lighter materials. Car campers can prioritize comfort and space over packability.
Extra gear
Having a tent is great, but don’t forget the other camping essentials like sleeping bags, tent accessories, camping stoves and more.
