Fluffy down captures your body heat to keep you toasty on chilly belays and pre-dawn commutes. Choose from a wide selection of down jackets from Patagonia, The North Face, Mountain Hardwear and more. Many of these designs – including all MEC down jackets – use certified responsible down.
Down offers incredible warmth for its weight and bulk. Puffy down jackets can compress into tiny packages that take up next-to-no space in your backpack. The trade-off? Unlike synthetic insulation, down doesn’t insulate well when it’s wet, and it dries slowly. Down is a good choice for dry days and activities where you don’t sweat much, like winter camping.
You’ll see down jackets described in terms of fill-power: the volume in cubic inches of one ounce of down. A higher number means higher-quality down with more loft, but it doesn't tell you exactly how warm the jacket is (because fill-power doesn’t tell you how much down is actually in the jacket). You can filter this page by insulation warmth to get a better idea of which down jackets could work for your needs.
If your puffy seems clumpy or thin, it might be time to wash your down jacket. Did an encounter with a sharp branch leave a hole in your jacket? Tuck any feathers back in, apply a patch, and voila – your jacket is ready for its next adventure.
