Synthetic insulated jackets
Multi-functional layers for getting active
For reliable warmth on dawn patrols and moonlight snowshoe adventures, reach for a trusty synthetic insulated jacket. These versatile pieces use lightweight polyester fibres to trap body heat while still being breathable. Once you warm up, they're easy to stuff into your pack.
Low-profile synthetic insulated jackets shine as part of a layering system and on their own in milder temperatures. Designs with more insulation work well for colder temps or mellower activities.
Synthetic vs. down insulation
While both types of insulation will keep you toasty, they have different strengths.
Unlike down, synthetic insulation keeps you warm even if it gets wet. This makes it a great choice for wet or humid environments and high-output activities like hiking or backcountry skiing. Synthetic jackets also dry quickly, are easy to care for, and tend to be more affordable than down jackets.
The trade-off is that many types of synthetic insulation are bulkier than down, so synthetic jackets may take up a bit more space in your pack.
Synthetic insulation and sustainability
Brands like Outdoor Research, Patagonia, Arc’teryx and MEC Label continually innovate in pursuit of better warmth-to-weight ratios and sustainability.
Many synthetic insulated jackets sold at MEC use recycled and bluesign®-approved materials to lower their environmental impact. Synthetic insulation is also a good choice for people who want to avoid using animal products like down.
