Toddler and child jackets at MEC
When it comes to keeping the little ones warm and dry during outdoor adventures, choosing the right jacket is key. A good jacket not only protects kids against the elements but also lets them move freely and comfortably while they have fun and explore outside. Whether it’s a drizzly day at the playground, a snowy walk to school or even a windy beach outing, having the right toddler and child jackets ensures they stay cozy and happy. At MEC, we’ve got a big selection of kids’ raincoats, winter jackets and more from epic brands like MEC Label and [Patagonia] (/en/products/kids-baby/outerwear/jackets?brand=Patagonia).
Toddler and child rain jackets
Child rain jackets made from waterproof-breathable fabrics like GORE-TEX are best for wet and windy days. When you choose a waterproof-breathable jacket, you’ll be balancing weight and packability against abrasion-resistance and durability. There are also jackets made with water-resistant materials, which are treated with a durable water repellent (DWR) finish. DWR is applied to the outside of the jacket so that water beads up and rolls off. It stands up best to light rain, so a waterproof-breathable jacket is better for heavier downpours. To learn more about the differences, check out our article on waterproof vs. water-resistant fabrics.
Toddler and child winter jackets
While shopping for winter coats made for cold, snowy weather, insulation should be your top priority. Down jackets are incredibly warm and lightweight but aren’t recommended for wet environments unless they’re paired with a waterproof shell. Knowing how to layer for outdoor activities is a great place to start while researching on what exact kind of jacket your kid needs.
Know your insulation
The type of toddler and child jacket fabric you choose will depend on the time of year, climate and activity you have planned. Jackets with built-in insulation are great for downhill skiing, playing in the snow and keeping warm outside on cold winter days, but aren’t as versatile for other seasons because they’re usually on the heavier side. Lighter shells or rain jackets are perfect for variable weather in the spring and fall, rainy days on the playground and layering for cooler nights. There’s no perfect system of layered clothing that will suit all circumstances. But the beauty of layers is that you can get the right mix for the conditions and activity level. And if you think you might encounter snow, a sudden shift in the weather, or a later-than-planned return, you can adapt – and you can always bring an extra layer.
