Several styles of folding knives designed to open with one hand are no longer available for purchase from MEC. Manufactured by various companies, these knives are subject to a recent importation ban by the Canada Border Services Agency, which expands the definition of so-called centrifugal knives. Previously, knives that would expose the blade with a flick of the wrist were illegal to import (MEC has never sold such knives). Now, however, knives that expose the blade though “minimal manipulation of either a flipper or other non-edged parts of the blade” are also illegal to import. The latter kind of knives have been removed from sale.
More information about the ruling is available from the Canada Border Services Agency.
