Everything you need to go camping and hiking
Whether you're heading out to explore the trails in a local park or planning a weekend camping trip, having the right gear makes all the difference. Here’s a rundown of the essentials for hiking and camping to ensure a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience.
Hiking boots and trail shoes
Select a pair of boots or shoes that offer support, traction, and protection and make sure they’re well-fitted to avoid blisters and discomfort. If you plan to carry a heavy pack or cover loose rocks or snowy terrain, stiff-soled boots that provide ankle support are a good choice. Check out Zamberlan for a line of top-rated hiking boots. If you’re hitting established trails and you like to move fast with a light pack, consider low-cut shoes or trail runners. Solomon and Merrell offer a wide range of hiking footwear for men and women. Pack the 10 essentials for hiking
There’s a reason we use the phrase “like a walk in the park,” it’s because hiking is so sweet and simple. But even when you head out for a short trip, carrying a few essentials adds a margin of safety in case the weather changes, you’re delayed or need to handle an emergency. They include warm layers, food and water, plus items to help you navigate, address minor injuries and patch up your gear. Read up on the 10 essentials to bring hiking to prepare for an enjoyable hike. It’s not among the 10 essentials, but many hikers like to carry bear spray as “just in case” equipment.

Tents and shelters for camping
If you can sleep, you can camp. Whether you opt for a family-size tent, an ultralight shelter, a rooftop tent or even a hammock, MEC has high-quality options to suit any budget. Look for a tent with good ventilation, a rainfly for weather protection, and a size based on your needs—whether you're camping solo or with a group. Brands like Big Agnes, MSR and MEC are reliable top-sellers and give you options for backpacking or for camping in a drive-in site in a park or campground.
Sleeping setup
It’s fine to use a comforter from home if you’re camping close to the car. If you need something lighter and more packable to take backpacking, choose a sleeping bag with a temperature rating suited to the conditions you’ll encounter. Down sleeping bags are the lightest option, synthetics are the easiest to wash when you get home. A sleeping pad adds crucial insulation from the cold ground and provides extra comfort. Inflatable pads offer great cushioning and packability, while foam pads are durable and simple.
Camp furniture and lighting
Relaxing in camp after a day of exploring is one of the great joys of summertime. Lightweight, folding chairs with good back support are perfect for camp life and handy for outdoor events and festivals as well. A reliable camp stove is essential for cooking tasty meals and a well-insulated, rugged cooler from a brand like Yeti or Igloo will keep drinks cold and perishable food fresh over a weekend or longer.
LED headlamps are ideal for activities requiring both hands, such as setting up a tent, and they’re essential for navigating trails after dark. To illuminate your entire campsite,
LED lanterns provide ambient light for dining or playing games, plus they create a warm atmosphere when campfires aren’t permitted. Many models have features like built-in USB ports for charging phones and other electronics.
