Frequently asked questions
What gear do I need for a day hike?
For most day hikes, you’ll want to bring a few key essentials to stay comfortable and safe. A good pair of hiking shoes or boots is a must. A small daypack can hold water, snacks, an extra layer, a rain jacket, and anything else you might need. It’s smart to also carry a headlamp, a basic first aid kit, sun protection, and a map or downloaded GPS. Even on shorter hikes, having the right gear helps you relax and enjoy the trail.
What should I wear hiking in Canada?
The weather can change quickly out on the trail, so layering is your best bet. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, then add something warm like a fleece or light puffy. A waterproof jacket is key if rain is in the forecast. Choose hiking pants that are breathable and quick-drying. Wool or synthetic socks work best since they keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters. Depending on the season, you might also want a hat, gloves or an extra layer in your pack.
What are the best hiking shoes or boots?
It depends on where you’re hiking and what feels best for your feet. For easy trails, trail runners or low-cut hiking shoes are light and comfortable. For rugged terrain or heavy loads, go with mid or high-cut boots that offer more support. Look for something with solid grip, breathable material and enough room in the toe box. Always try them on with the socks you’ll be wearing and give yourself time to break them in before a big hike.
Do I really need trekking poles?
Trekking poles aren’t required but a lot of people find them helpful. They can take pressure off your knees, improve your balance and give you extra stability on tough terrain. If you’re climbing or descending a lot, carrying a heavy pack or recovering from an injury, poles can make a big difference. Most poles are adjustable and lightweight so they’re easy to pack if you decide to bring them along.
Hiking gear buyer’s guide
Footwear that goes the distance
Your shoes do a lot of the work on a hike, so picking the right pair is key. We carry hiking boots and trail shoes from brands like Salomon, Merrell, La Sportiva and Oboz. Go with lightweight shoes for day hikes or waterproof boots if you're carrying a heavy pack or hiking in rougher weather. A good pair of moisture-wicking socks goes a long way too.
Packs that carry it all
From short loops to multi-hour treks, a comfortable hiking pack keeps your stuff organized and easy to grab. We've got daypacks for light hikes and bigger packs if you need to bring more gear. Look for padded straps, breathable back panels and space for a hydration system if that’s your style.
Layers for all conditions
The weather can change fast out there, so layering with hiking clothes is the way to go. Quick-dry tees, breathable pants, fleece midlayers and waterproof jackets are all part of a solid hiking kit. MEC carries gear that keeps you cool in the heat and warm when the sun dips behind the trees.
Extra hiking gear worth packing
Trekking poles help with steep climbs and long descents, and a headlamp is handy if your hike runs late. A water bottle or hydration pack is a must, and it’s always smart to bring a basic first aid kit and some snacks. If you're heading into bear country, pick up bear spray and know how to use it.
