MEC is a founding member of the non-profit organization Leave No Trace (LNT) Canada. Since 2006, MEC has supported LNT Canada’s mission to promote the responsible use of outdoor spaces through education, research and partnerships to help people discover the value of natural environments.
The seven Leave No Trace principles provide the framework for minimum impact practices and techniques. People getting active outside can use this framework to better protect and conserve the natural environment for current and future generations.
MEC continues to support LNT Canada’s core activities to help remind people that even small changes in behavior can have a big impact. From remote wilderness areas to local parks and even in your own backyard, together we can make a major difference.
Every year, MEC supports the Leave No Trace program in Canada by funding education and awareness projects from coast to coast. A few of the many projects that have been completed with MEC’s contributions are:
- Creating a new website
- Producing educational videos and images
- Online learning workshops
- Leave No Trace workshops at MEC stores
- Translating informational and educational material
- Producing Leave No Trace reference cards
Significantly more people are visiting recreational areas, and many are venturing deeper into natural spaces. We can no longer simply pick up our waste and put out our fires – we have to do much better and learn how to preserve the integrity and wildness of nature for all living things.
