KEY POINTS & INTENDED USE

UV water purifier. This model is aka the Steripen "Classic", c/w prefilter.

Steripen uses short wave UV light to disinfect water. The UV light disrupts the

DNA within bacteria, viruses and protozoa, rendering them harmless. Steripen is

intended for use, and is most effective, in CLEAR water. However, Steripen has

been shown to REDUCE microbial contamination in turbid water. Follow detailed

instructions if using in turbid water and choose other water treatment options

if you expect to encounter turbid water.

To use Steripen: remove lamp cover, select treatment dose (.5 or 1L), immerse

lamp in water(UV lamp turns on when sensors on the pen body detect water)more

agitate or stir water until UV lamp turns off and indicator lights signal

successful completion of treatment. Agitation is required to ensure that water

is fully exposed to UV radiation. Treatment of .5 litres is completed in approx

45 seconds, 1 L in approx 90 seconds. See instructions for detailed description

of indicator light function. UV lamp life is approx. 8000 treatments.

Steripen "Classic"uses 4 AA cell batteries (not included). Manufacturers tests

indicate that Lithium batteries will treat approx 100 liters, NiMH 90-105 liters

of water. Manufacturer recommends Lithium disposable or NiMH rechargeable

batteries with 2300 mAh capacity. Colder ambient temperatures will negatively af

fect the number of doses per battery charge.more

In cold conditions bring Steripen up to a temperature above 0°C before using

and/or store batteries in pocket or other warm location.

Prefilter fits standard 63mm thread water bottles. Use prefilter to help clear

particulates and debris from water. Prefilter bottle adaptor may be used to

assist agitation of water instead of stirring. After filling bottle with water

using the prefilter, remove the filter from the bottle adaptor, prepare the pen

for treatment, insert pen firmly into adaptor to seal, then invert bottle and

shake gently to agitate.

Turbidity and Steripen - two pages of notes follow

Turbidity is a measure of water clarity as effected by the presence of

suspended solids. It is difficult to communicate a particular level of

turbidity in a written description. Steripen has been successfully tested in

water with a turbidity measurement of 33 ntu. If viewing 33ntu water in a clear

1 liter bottle, Steripen has provided the following descriptions of how one

might characterize the water:

Much closer to clear than opaque, Obviously not clear, Obviously cloudy, Objects

viewed through the water are visible but blurry, As cloudy as weak lemonade

more

If clear water is not available, first try to filter the water to clarify it.

If the particulate is not too fine, allowing the water to stand will sometimes

be helpful. If it is necessary to treat turbid, murky or cloudy water in an

emergency situation, use the Steripen as follows:

- to treat 1 liter of turbid water, use two one-liter treatments.

- to treat 0.5 liters of turbid water, use a single 1 liter dose.
