Slide down the slopes with downhill skis
Gearing up for ski season? Whether you’re a beginner eager to tackle your first bunny hill or an old pro chasing the thrill of backcountry descents, the right pair of downhill skis makes all the difference. At MEC, we’ve got a wide selection of downhill skis that match every type of skier. From brands like Black Crows, FACTION, Blizzard and more, you’ll be well-equipped for everything from carving turns to mastering double black diamond runs.
How to choose downhill skis
Still not sure what to look for when it comes to choosing downhill skis? It all depends on your experience. If you're focusing on mastering turns and gaining confidence on green and blue runs, beginner skis are an excellent choice. These skis are built to make linking turns smoother and easier, with a softer flex that provides more forgiveness if you slip up. Look for skis with a narrower waist (the middle part of the ski), as this makes them more manageable. Skis with a blend of camber and rocker are also a good option – the rockered tip and tail lift slightly off the snow, making the skis feel shorter and helping you turn with less effort.
Skis for intermediate skiers
Confident parallel skiers tackling blue and black runs need skis that enhance their performance. If you're focusing on carving and navigating a mix of groomed trails, powder, and varied terrain, look for skis with a bit more width and a rockered tip and tail to handle deeper snow. Intermediate skis typically feature a blend of camber and rocker for versatility and tend to be stiffer than beginner models, offering better control and responsiveness as you refine your skills and explore different types of snow conditions.
Skis for experts
Confident, aggressive skiers who thrive in powder, steep slopes, and tree runs need skis designed to glide through deep snow effortlessly. Look for wide skis (100mm+ at the waist) with a longer length and a rockered tip, or even a full rocker, for optimal flotation. If you're considering both backcountry and downhill skiing, carbon skis are a great option—they offer a stiff, responsive ride while remaining lightweight, giving you the performance you need without the added bulk of heavier constructions.
Don’t forget the extras
Once you’ve chosen your perfect pair of skis, don’t forget to complete your setup. Downhill ski boots, bindings, and poles are essential to ensure a smooth ride. For those skiing with little ones, toddler ski harnesses and other beginner tools can help build confidence on the slopes.
