Ski boots

With ski season on the horizon, anyone who’s planning on spending lots of time on the slopes needs a reliable pair of ski boots. Not only to attach their feet to their skis, but also to give you plenty of warmth, comfort and control throughout the day. From gentle green runs to tackling the adrenaline of a double-black diamond, you’ll need a good pair of downhill ski boots to maximize your performance and enjoyment on the mountain. At MEC, you’ll find all sizes and styles of ski boots from epic brands like K2, Dynafit, SCARPA and more.

Fitting ski boots

Fit should be your main focus when choosing ski boots. A well-fitted boot should balance comfort and performance and can make a huge difference in your skiing experience. First, make sure your boots are fully compatible with your downhill ski bindings. You can always ask an MEC staffer about compatibility between boots and bindings if you aren’t sure. For sizing, alpine ski boots don’t align perfectly with regular shoe sizes, so you can check out our article on how to choose and fit ski boots to get a better idea of sizing.

Picking your ski boot stiffness

Ski boot stiffness is measured by the flex rating, which reflects how rigid the boots are when flexed forward. The flex rating typically ranges from 50 (soft) to 130 (very stiff) – the higher the number, the stiffer the boot. However, it's important to note that there isn’t an industry-wide standardized test for flex ratings. As a result, a boot with the same flex number might feel different between brands. Factors like boot construction, design, and materials can all impact the boot’s stiffness and overall feel.
