Road bikes 101
Looking for new ways to ride? Road bikes are fantastic sets of wheels that are designed for speed and efficiency on paved surfaces. With their lightweight frames, thin tires and drop handlebars, road bikes are best for long-distance routes, races or your daily commute to work or school. All across Canada, road biking has become more popular than ever, thanks to more and more cities becoming biker friendly. So if you’re interested in road biking, read up on how to buy a bike, find the right wheels for you and come see what we’ve got in store at MEC.
Best brands to help you go the distance
There are several different brands across Canada that make excellent road bikes that will last you years, and they’re all available at MEC. Cannondale specifically has been a leading brand in the road bike market due to their innovate design and cutting-edge tech, thanks to their bikes’ aluminum frames, one-sided lefty forks and HollowGram cranksets. Other brands include Salsa and Polygon, providing a wealth of rides to choose from.
Choosing the right bike
The one thing that can make road bike shopping a bit of a challenge is deciding what style of riding you like. Some road bikes are uber-performance oriented with aggressive geometry and high-end, super lightweight components and materials. And there are lots of general-purpose road bikes that people use as commuters or for bike touring.
Once you’ve got the type of road bike narrowed down, it’s time to think about sizing. Most bike frames come in different sizes. On the correct bike frame size, you should be able to almost fully extend your leg while pedalling and be able to comfortably reach the handlebars. To find the right size frame, straddle the bike halfway between the saddle and the handlebars (while wearing your usual riding shoes), and see how much space there is between you and the bike’s top tube. Generally, a few centimetres of space are a good starting point, but the geometry of the road bike also comes into play, especially with mountain bikes.
