Footwear and crampons
The foundation of your gear starts with sturdy mountaineering boots and crampons. Crampons are metal spikes that attach to your boots, giving you the traction needed on icy or steep terrain. There are various types of crampons, including lightweight options for snow travel and technical models with aggressive front points for climbing vertical ice. When choosing crampons, consider their compatibility with your boots and the activity you’ll tackle. Strap-on models work with most boots, while step-in or hybrid designs require specific mountaineering boots. Properly fitted crampons ensure safety and stability outdoors.
Ice axes and tools
Designed for stability and safety, ice axes aid in safety during a slip, providing support while traversing steep slopes and assists in anchoring or cutting steps in ice. Ice axes come in various lengths, with shorter models suited for steep climbs and longer ones for general mountaineering.
