So, what exactly is backcountry skiing? In essence, it’s about earning your turns—trekking up snow-covered terrain ("skinning up") so you can carve your way back down. Unlike resort skiing, backcountry adventures take you off the beaten path to pristine landscapes. First off, a ski touring checklist is essential if you’re getting into backcountry skiing. Unlike a typical day at the resort, backcountry skiing involves more gear and preparation. A waterproof-breathable jacket and pants are essential to protect against changing weather conditions. Insulating mid-layers and warm base layers are necessary to maintain warmth in colder temperatures, while moisture-wicking ski socks keep your feet dry. Add to that a sturdy pair of gloves, a helmet and ski goggles to ensure you stay comfortable and safe. A dedicated backcountry ski backpack is another must-have. These backpacks are designed with specialized compartments for avalanche safety gear—like a beacon, probe and shovel—and plenty of room for extra layers, food, water and other essentials.
