Wetsuits for cold water adventures
Whether you’re a surfer, swimmer or paddler, wetsuits help keep you warm in cool water by trapping a thin layer of water against your skin. Your body heats this water, creating an insulating barrier that slows down heat loss and allows for extended time in the water. The key to wetsuit insulation is neoprene, a durable, waterproof synthetic rubber. Neoprene is both insulating and flexible, making it ideal for watersports. Wetsuits come in different thicknesses, typically ranging from 2mm for warm water to 7mm for cold water. Thicker neoprene provides better insulation but can reduce flexibility, while thinner wetsuits offer more mobility for active sports. At MEC, you can find all different styles and sizes of wetsuits from top brands like Xcel, Level Six, MEC Label and more.
Types of wetsuits
Different wetsuit styles provide varying levels of warmth and mobility. Full wetsuits cover the entire body, making them ideal for cold water. Spring suits, with short sleeves and short legs, are designed for milder conditions. Long john and long jane wetsuits keep the core and legs warm while leaving the arms free, making them a great choice for paddlers who need more upper-body mobility. For colder conditions, adding neoprene boots, gloves and hoods can help retain body heat and keep you comfortable. Wetsuit zippers also affect warmth and flexibility, with back zips being easy to put on and chest zips offering a snugger fit. Sealed and taped seams provide extra protection against water entry, ensuring you stay warm even in rougher conditions. You can learn about how to choose a wetsuit on our website.
Wetsuit care and maintenance
To extend the lifespan of your wetsuit, rinse it with fresh water after every use to remove salt, sand and chlorine. Drying it in the shade helps prevent sun damage, which can cause neoprene to break down over time. Using a wetsuit cleaner occasionally keeps it fresh and maintains its flexibility. Proper storage, such as laying it flat or using a wide hanger, prevents creases and maintains its shape.
