Layers for all seasons

Breathability is essential for summer riding days. But as temps dip and rain (maybe even sleet) sets in, you’ll want more protection. A good layering system helps with changing temperatures and output; for example, climbing up a mountain bike trail will heat you up, but you can put on an extra layer if you’re waiting at the top or the weather turns.

Look for waterproof-breathable gear if you expect to be riding in less-than-nice conditions. Cycling-specific rain pants and jackets block showers while still letting moisture escape, so you don’t feel clammy.

To round off your cycling kit, add gloves and bike socks to keep you warm, protected and dry. If the weather looks like it might change midday, leg or arm warmers are a lightweight option for added warmth.
