CONSTRUCTION & DESIGN

If you canoe-camp on exposed islets or run rivers above the Arctic treeline,

you know what you need at the end of the day - a safe haven from the wind and

the bugs. Use the Mantis tarp as a refuge where you can sprawl and unwind over

supper, restoring your spirits, reliving today's adventures, and planning

tomorrow's.

The low, angled end is designed to be pointed into the prevailing wind, where

it breaks the airstream the way a boat's bow parts the water. You can open the

window in this corner to maximize airflow (it's sheltered from rain by a flap)

or batten it down completely in heavy weather. All these adjustments can be

accomplished from inside, thanks to a zipper in the bug mesh panel.

more

A centre pole arches between the two side corners, creating stability and

headroom. The open front is enclosed by bug mesh only, admitting views and fresh

air, but leaving mossies and black flies outside to gnash their mandibles in

frustration. Fabric flaps along all bottom edges keep them from tunnelling

their way in.

In most conditions, the front corner can be suspended high enough for two or

three people to stand. In this open-ended mode, the Mantis will accommodate six

adventurers for dining and socializing in luxury. Should you take pity on some

other unfortunate victims of weather or winged horrors, you can find room for

two or three more.

more

When the wind is especially strong or unpredictable, rig the Mantis with its

front to the ground. Let the ends of the arch pole spread wide before staking

them, this will lower the entire structure for greater stability. This

configuration reduces headroom and useable interior space, but creates a shape

that foils wind.

Note that the Mantis does not come with a pole for the front tip. Many people

prefer to save weight, packed size, and cost by improvising from trees,

driftwood, or a couple of paddles lashed end-to-end. For those who want it, we

sell the MSR Adjustable Pole separately - 5027-519 or use any pole between 92-
