ABUS, which stands for August Bremicker und Söhne (“August Bremicker and Sons”), started out making brass padlocks, locks for telephones with dial plates and door locks. Their first bike lock was released in 1958, a frame lock called the ABUS 1000. They’ve come a long way since then, from innovating early versions of the U-lock in the 1970s to making cutting edge security equipment trusted around the world today.
