Build your riding kit for any season

Whether you’re mountain biking on summer days or commuting in the pouring rain, the right gear keeps you comfortable and riding longer. Cycling tops typically fit longer in the back for coverage in the riding position. Back pockets are great for a spare tube and snacks, and front zips give instant air conditioning.

Plan for the conditions

First thing’s first: what’s the weather looking like? Knowing how to layer is important anytime you’re outside, including on a bike.

If conditions are dry and warm, opt for lightweight short-sleeved shirts or jerseys that wick sweat. Most cycling tops are antimicrobial as well, which helps stave off lingering smells to keep things fresh.

If you’re a year-round rider (maybe even learning how to prep for winter riding), jackets and long-sleeved tops are a must. Look for waterproof-breathable shells, taped seams and helmet-compatible hoods to keep out the rain. Many lightweight jackets are small enough to stash in your riding pack or jersey pocket. For shoulder seasons, arm warmers are a nice hit of instant warmth – great for days when it starts cold and warms up.
