Two-way radios to stay in touch off the grid

For a camping trip, travel or a hike – a two-way radio is a great way to stay in contact with friends or family outside. Plus, who doesn’t love the excuse to use a walkie-talkie at any opportunity?

What to look for in a two-way radio

When you’re shopping for a two-way radio, consider where you want to use it and with whom. Is it for you and your family to use casually around the campground, or will you be taking it out on choppy waters or in severe weather conditions? Here are a few features to consider when you’re making your choice:

  • Effective range: Two-way radios vary in their effective range, with high-end options offering as far as 60 kilometres of communication.
  • Battery life: How long do you need your walkie-talkies charged? Many use batteries, so it’s easy to keep spares on hand. Charging docks offer another option for keeping things powered.
  • Waterproofing: Do you just need your two-way radio to survive a little rain, or being dropped in the lake and fished back out? Many models offer some degree of waterproofing, so keep an eye out. If you’re worried, grab a dry bag to throw it in.
  • Floatation: If you’re taking your two-way radio on the water, consider looking for a model that’s designed not to sink.

Other handy features include number of channels, weather channel access and even integrated flashlights, so keep your eyes open for those.
