Snowshoeing gear for big winter walks
Snowshoeing is a great way to explore the snowy outdoors, get some exercise and even connect with nature. Whether you’re new to the activity or a seasoned snowshoer gearing up for another adventure, you’ll need the right snowshoeing gear to make a major difference in your experience. At MEC, you can find snowshoes, winter boots, poles, traction devices and more, designed by trusted brands like KEEN, MEC Label, MSR and more.
The basics: Snowshoes
The most essential piece of gear for snowshoeing is the snowshoes themselves. Snowshoes come in various designs to suit different terrain, conditions and skill levels. If you’re sticking to groomed trails, lightweight recreational snowshoes are a great choice. For backcountry exploration or steep, icy routes, look for models with aggressive traction and sturdy frames to handle more challenging conditions. Adjustable bindings are key for comfort and security, so make sure the snowshoes you choose fit well with your winter boots. Poles are another consideration. You can learn on our website about how to choose snowshoes.
Layering up for snowshoeing
What you wear can make or break your snowshoeing adventure. Start with insulated, waterproof active winter boots that are compatible with your snowshoes and keep your feet warm and dry. Pair them with gaiters to prevent snow from sneaking into your boots—especially useful in deep snow or when conditions are particularly powdery. Layering is key for snowshoeing since the activity can be surprisingly strenuous. Start with moisture-wicking base layers, add an insulating mid-layer and top it off with a waterproof, breathable outer layer to protect against snow and wind. Snow pants or softshell pants are great for mobility and protection, while gloves, hats, and neck warmers ensure you stay cozy.
Additional gear
Sometimes, snowshoeing conditions aren’t ideal, especially when the snow is shallow or icy. In those cases, traction devices like microspikes are a great backup for added grip. These lightweight tools attach to your boots and help you navigate icy sections with confidence. Finally, you’ll need a way to carry your gear. Ski and snowboard backpacks are a fantastic option, designed to hold essentials like water, snacks, extra layers and even your snowshoes when they’re not in use. Snowshoe accessories, like replacement straps or crampons, can also make your trip smoother.
