Outdoor Research: a history of innovation

OR was founded by Ron Gregg, a nuclear physicist, who saw a faulty pair of gaiters end a friend’s summit bid on a glacier near Danali. As Ron headed back down alone, he envisioned a functional solution to the gear problem, and the idea for an innovative, research-led outdoor brand was born. Based in Seattle, OR products are put through their paces by a team of word-class mountain athletes.

Rainwear and insulated jackets

Renowned by skiers, mountain climbers and fast-paced hikers for combining function with weight-saving innovations, [Outdoor Research rain jackets](/ en/products/brands/outdoor-research/clothing/jackets/rain-jackets) are top-sellers at MEC. They were among the first to introduce stretch fabrics into waterproof jackets and use materials such as Pertex and GORE Paclite to offer sub-200g shells to the ultralight hiking crowd. Their lightweight insulated jackets are packable enough to bring on any outdoor adventure for warmth insurance on winter days or in unpredictable conditions.

Technical hats and gloves

Clothing size and fit

Layers that breathe, offer full coverage and help manage sweat are key to your outdoor comfort. Outdoor Research clothing offers unbeatable technical performance and is designed to fit a wide range of body types.

For female athletes, they offer straight sizes in XS to L, extended sizes available up to XXL and plus sizes to 4X. The designs account for different hip to waist ratios and are proportioned for body shapes that change relative to size.
