Everything you need to hike and camp
Is anything better than waking up in the woods? Birds chirping, sun through the trees and a full day ahead. The right gear makes it all possible. To find out what you need, check out our hiking and camping checklists.
Pack it up to hike
There’s a lot to consider when investing in hiking gear. In your pack, carry the 10 essentials, including a headlamp, first aid kit and water. Technical terrain? Reach for trekking poles to stay sturdy on steep climbs.
Hiking boots or trail shoes are a must, and gaiters keep mud, snow and slush out of your socks. Check out our guide on how to choose hiking footwear for tips. And what to wear? Build a layering system: shells, insulated jackets and base layers keep warmth in and bad weather out. Hiking pants are stretchy and durable for scrambling over rocks (and let’s not forget about pockets).
Home away from home
Whether you’re car camping at a provincial park or backpacking for a month, you’ll need a quality tent that stands up to the elements (and keep out the bugs). Get comfy with thick sleeping pads and lofty sleeping bags. A camp chair for kicking back is always welcome too – along with kitchen gear for meals outside.
