## What inspired People Like Us?
**Ryan**: I’ve negotiated my sexuality and role in the outdoor sports industry, and the small towns I find myself in, for many years. I’ve often asked myself what it is about the adventure industry and its rural settings that make me, a gay man, so uncomfortable. Is it the activity or the space? What is it like for other queer people in the industry?

I’ve explored this discomfort in the past both professionally and academically. I have worked throughout the outdoor industry, from surf, to rock, to snow. While each industry holds up a select few queer professionals, overall members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ still feel out of place.

I’m making *People Like Us* for this community, whether they’re a pro or a newbie. This film is for people who live, work, and play, in rural outdoor settings. People who maybe need more than a gay Olympic athlete to feel welcome. I aim to share stories and experiences that paint an honest picture of queer life in rural spaces and hopefully allow for conversations on how both the outdoor community and municipal communities alike can create a more inclusive environment.

## Why was it important to you for Yamnuska to be featured alongside other climbing meccas?  

**John**: I felt it was important to tell the story of Yamnuska’s climbing history because it was where technical rock climbing began in Canada. We knew some of the pioneers were still around and able to tell their stories, which inspired me and the team at Sherpas Cinema to learn their stories and try and convey their experiences through film.  

## Could you share some insights into your personal connection with Yamnuska and how it influenced your decision to create this film?  

**John**: When I first moved to Canada in 2012 I was quite “green.” Yamnuska was one of the first places that I climbed here and it’s where I cut my teeth. I was humbled at how serious a place it can be to climb and because of that fact, how much it could teach you. The loose rock, route finding, and runouts are not for everyone, but if you’re an aspiring alpinist or competent rock climber, there is no better place to spend your time.

## What do you believe sets it apart from other climbing destinations?  

**John**: Loose rock, complex route finding, traditional gear, run-outs and climate make it a formidable arena. In a lot of ways, I think Yamnuska’s appeal is because of its “flaws.” It’s not perfect, but I think that's where a lot of its value lies. It is demanding, it is cerebral, it is serious, but if you can climb on Yamnuska safely, you can climb anywhere.  

 
Culturally speaking, Îyâ Mnathka is an important mountain to the Stoney Nakoda, it serves as both a reminder and symbol of the strength of their community. I think the fact that Îyâ Mnathka (Yamnuska) is such a culturally significant mountain to the Stoney Nakoda resonates with the climbing community. It adds layers of awe, mystique and respect. During the process of the film, countless climbers would all express their love and respect for the mountain in a very similar way, a way that was hard to describe (their words) but one of profound meaning.

## The film pays homage to the colorful characters who have left their mark since the 1950s. Can you share any stories from these climbers that you discovered during filming?  

**John**: The stories were endless. Tales of 80-foot whippers, soloing, epic link-ups, trucks being driven halfway up the hill to the base of the cliff and riding trains from Calgary to the area below Yamnuska. We created entire sections of the film that had to end up being cut because it either didn't serve the direct purpose of the story of Yamnuska, or we simply did not have time to fit in. Let's just say we have a lot of material we hope to still cut smaller edits out of.  

## How did you balance the exploration of Yamnuska's history with the portrayal of modern climbing?  

**John**: I was always inspired by the idea of pairing old stories (talking head interviews) from the early days with modern-day climbing. On one hand, you’re hearing and seeing (archival photos) what it was like back then, while watching Vikki Weldon and Quentin Roberts climb the route or sometimes the exact pitch being spoken about. This formula excited me because it gave us a way to bring the audience into the experience that was being spoken about. It made it relatable to a younger, more modern crowd of climbers while still paying homage to the pioneers. I felt it complimented both the history and the sports action elements of the film.

## Are there any voices you wished you could've highlighted in this film, but didn't get a chance to?  

**John**: Isobel Spreat, without a doubt. She was on the first ascent team with Hans Gmoser and Leo Grillmair on Grillmair Chimneys. It was somewhat rare for a woman to be climbing back then, and for her to have been climbing with Hans and Leo during the first ascent of the cliff, was even more incredible. Sadly, Isobel passed away before we started production of the film. Aside from Isobel, there were endless people I would have loved to include, endless stories and different routes to speak about. The hardest thing was choosing what to include and focus on and what had to be left out. It will haunt me until the end of days!  

## What do you hope the legacy of this film will be, both for the climbing community and for those who may not be familiar with the sport?  

**John**: I hope this film is remembered as Canada’s first big-budget cinematic climbing film. I hope that people watch this film and feel inspired to call their grandparents, sit down for a cup of tea and learn stories that won't be able to be learned forever. I like to think that we conveyed a feeling that history is important and so much can be learned from looking back and listening. For those not familiar with climbing, I hope the themes in this film transcend the sport and that it can be applied and appreciated into other aspects of life. To the not-yet-climbers, I hope I didn't scare you off learning, it's an incredible way to spend your life.

Yamnuska: The Ragged Edge

A solid [bikepacking checklist](/en/explore/bikepacking-checklist) is a fantastic start for your off-road missions. But knowing exactly what to choose is another story. From bike bags to GPS units, here are features and products we recommend when building a bikepacking setup that’s lightweight, packable and reliable.

## Bike bags and racks 
Essential for bikepacking (obviously). Whether you opt for saddle packs or a rack setup, some tips on what to look for: 

### Saddle packs
Saddle packs are by far one of the most popular bikepacking bag options. They’re easy to install and don’t require additional mounting points or racks. Features you’ll likely want: 
- Waterproofing is a must (rainy days and muddy tires mean your saddle pack will get wet).
- Roll closure systems can accommodate tons of gear and you can roll them up tight when less stuffed. 
- Seat post and seat rail straps are essential. Cinch as solidly as possible to prevent tail wag.
- Many saddle packs include elastic cords or daisy chains. Elastic cords are great for stuffing a jacket into quickly, while daisy chains are good for clipping on tricky-to-pack things like camp mugs.
- Internal stiffeners provide extra rigidity to the bag and prevent it from sagging under load.

### Seat pack + rear rack combos 
For extra security and hauling lots of cargo on big trips, a seat post/bag combo does wonders. Another option is a “floating” rack design that attaches to your bike’s seat stays, which provides excellent stability. Some floating racks include additional mounting points for smaller bags – a solid option for multi-days with more gear.

### Handlebar bags 
Tied with seat packs as the bag you’re most likely to see on a bikepacking rig. You can get handlebar bags for both drop- and straight-style bars.
- For smaller loads, a simple strap that attaches to handlebars and the headtube works.
- Make sure your bar bag is waterproof (keep those snacks dry).
- Zippered or flap closures do the trick for tidy loads. For hauling more, a bigger bag with a roll-closure is best.
- The front of your bike is stable, so it can handle cargo if you opt for a rack or cradle system. 
- With rack or cradle systems, opt for a heavy-duty drybag with roll closure system.

### Frame packs
Attached directly to your bike frame, a frame pack is designed to fit in the triangle formed by the top tube, seat tube and down tube of your bike. 
- The longer shape allows for items such as pumps or tent poles to be strapped to or stored with ease.
- Available as a full frame pack or a half frame pack, choose a size that best fits your bike and your capacity needs 
- Maintains the bike's low center of gravity, making it the ideal place to pack heavier items.

## Lightweight tents
While you can go hyper-light with a bivy or hammock, the majority of us will opt for a light backpacking tent. Some things to consider:

- One- or two-person tents that pack small and are used by backpackers work well.
- A three-season tent is recommended.
- Ensure the tent includes a waterproof fly with fully taped seams.
- Look for a tent roughly in the 2kg range. Skip anything well above the 3 or 4kg mark.
- Any good backpacking tent will include a compact stuff sack. However, it’s possible to pack a tent even tighter. If need be, strap your tent poles to your saddle bag, or wrap them and secure to your top tube. You may be able to save a good chunk of space.

## Sleeping bags and pads 
Ideally, you want a sleeping bag that’s warm enough for spring, summer and fall camping, but not so heavy it weighs you down. A sleeping pad is a must (just don’t opt for a mega-sized car camping one).

- A nice, light sleeping bag is usually rated around 0°C to -2°C.
- Target weight for a lightweight sleeping bag is around 900–1100 grams.
- Make sure your bag has a durable water repellent (DWR) treatment.
- Sleeping pads with insulation are ideal, but you may be able to go lighter if hot weather is likely.
- A light sleeping pad should pack roughly to the size of a Nalgene bottle.

## Camp kitchen gear 
If you’re gonna bike, you gotta eat. Pack light, but be sure to bring essentials for good camp eating. 
- When it comes to stoves, single burner setups are best. They’re light, pack small and reliable. 
- If you pack a pot, pack as much of your cook setup into it (stove included, if room allows). 
- Some companies offer a “everything in a pot” cookware setup including collapsible bowls and mugs.
- Don’t forget coffee! Aeropress and pourover setups are a fantastic and lightweight option. 
- Make sure you have a plan for keeping bears and critters out of your food.

## GPS bike computer 
There are tons of options in this category with a lot of personal preferences in play. Be sure that whatever you choose has preloaded maps or the ability to upload maps before your ride. A head unit with integrated solar charging is a huge plus.

## Lights and portable power
A portable powerbank is a must. Don’t forget cords for GPS units, lights and your phone (we’ve all been there).
- If room and weight allows, bring more than one powerbank. Powerbanks that can charge a phone two to three times are solid.
- Opt for a front light you can actually navigate terrain with and not just be seen with, 400 lumens minimum. 
- A headlamp is a must-have for around camp. 
- A compact lantern to brighten up camp is nice, especially for groups.

[Keen](/products/brands/keen) has taken big strides to eliminate all PFAs, or per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances, from their footwear since 2018 – a huge accomplishment. ## Pushing towards our climate action goals
Our full sustainability report drops in August, but we figured there’s no better time than Earth Month to give an update on where we’re at with our Climate Action Plan. While we love to share our good news, we’re not going to shy away from where we came up short and how we’re still aiming to improve. 

One of our big pushes for lower-carbon products is within our MEC Label lineup, where we’re upping the usage of recycled fabrics. It hasn’t been easy, but we’re not done yet.  

- MEC Label more than **doubled our use of recycled nylon** going from 8% in 2022 to 19% in 2023. Our goal for 2023 was 30%, so there’s still a ways to go on this journey. 

- We also increased our use of **recycled polyester**, taking it from 41% in 2022 to 44% in 2023, but our goal for 2023 was 50%. 

In both cases we did not meet the goals we laid out. While we’re encouraged by the progress we made, not meeting a goal always stings a little. But we’re picking ourselves up, dusting off our boots and setting our sights on our 2030 goals of **100% recycled nylon and 100% recycled polyester.** We know there will be some challenges on the journey ahead, but as the saying goes, if you’re reaching all your goals, you’re not setting them high enough. 

You’ll find recycled fabrics in some of your favourite MEC layers like the [MEC Fireside Fleece Snap Pullover](/en/product/6014-893/fireside-fleece-snap-pullover?queryID=5ec344622295bb1d02d6a79750f439d6), which uses 100% recycled polyester and the classic [MEC Aquanantor Rain Jacket](/en/product/6016-853/x-aquanator-rain-jacket?queryID=37ffcb45b7344a13b3279c5922897a5c) uses 40-denier recycled nylon – just to name a few. 

Beyond our products, we’re making big moves to tackle our carbon emissions, and we’re leveraging some incredible partnerships to help maximize our impact.  

## UBC Sauder Centre for Climate and Business Solutions: SME Climate Clinic 
The UBC Sauder School of Business Centre for Climate and Business Solutions launched its first SME Climate Clinic in 2024, with MEC as the first Supply Chain Partner. This initiative helps us connect small brands with support and resources at UBC to start measuring and reducing their own emissions and MEC’s supply chain emissions, too. It also helps equip students with applied skills to drive sustainable change as future business leaders.

## City of Vancouver: False Creek Neighbourhood Energy Utility (NEU) 
One of the ways MEC Vancouver reduced the carbon emissions from our flagship store location is by connecting to the City of Vancouver’s False Creek Neighbourhood Energy Utility (NEU). The NEU system is super neat, it works by using waste thermal energy (a.k.a. heat) captured from sewage to provide space heating and hot water to buildings in Vancouver’s False Creek neighbourhood. This means our MEC Vancouver store uses renewable energy to heat the building, instead of only using conventional natural gas, and helps us operate our store in a lower-carbon way. The heat rejected from MEC Vancouver’s cooling system also helps to heat other buildings in the neighbourhood with renewable energy.  

## Get involved: Workshops and events 
It’s all about coming together as a community to help protect our favourite planet where we get to hike, bike, camp and climb. We’ve been cooking up some sweet events and initiatives to help you and your crew support some incredible outdoor organizations.

### Community Upcycling Workshops 
Want to get creative? We’re partnering with local organizations to host workshops events in your area. Tickets are just $10 – sign up quick as spots are limited.

Learn how to make your own bike bag or chalk bag from recycled materials with [The Cut Design Academy](https://www.thecutfashionacademy.com/), one of North America’s only accredited fashion and design schools. All materials and tools will be provided.

Make your own utility pouch with [Rick Rack](https://www.rickracktextiles.com/), a garment-focused sewing shop in the heart of Calgary. All tools and materials will be provided, but if you attend feel free to bring your own recycled fabric, too.   

**MEC Toronto**

Learn to make a stylish drawstring bag with [Create Studio](https://createartstudio.ca/), a team of artists and educators who provide workshops and classes in a variety of art mediums from sewing to pottery.  


**MEC Montréal**

**11am – 3pm**  

Make your own bike bags out of recycled banner pieces with [Les Affûtés](https://www.les-affutes.ca/), an organization founded on the idea that we can slow fast-paced consumerism by learning to build what we need and repair what we have. All materials and tools will be provided.

### Tommy Caldwell Talks: Ride for the Planet

Last year was a record breaker: tickets for our Evening with Tommy Caldwell sold out in 1.5 hours! This year, he’s back, with more **wild stories**, **cool prizes** and even a chance to **climb with Tommy** himself.  

First up, make sure you’re following [@mec](https://www.instagram.com/mec/) on Instagram and keep your eyes peeled on April 9 at 10am PST when Tommy takes over our Instagram Live.  

This second one’s a biggie. We’ll be hosting an Instagram giveaway where you could win 2 tickets for a VIP climbing sesh with Tommy Caldwell and MEC climbing ambassadors [Emma Contaoe](/en/explore/emma-contaoe) and [Sean McColl](/en/explore/sean-mccoll), **PLUS** 2 tickets for our live event, [Tommy Caldwell Talks: Ride for the Planet](https://www.mec.ca/en/explore/tommy-caldwell-talks-ride-for-the-planet), at MEC Vancouver. Did your brain just max out of stoke? Ours, too. 

Then of course there’s the grand finale, Tommy’s event hosted by MEC and Edelrid at MEC Vancouver. You can expect **silent auctions** on some sweet Edelrid gear, **prizes**, **drink tickets** for purchase and some wild stories for our climbing community. All event proceeds go to Van Queer Climbers and Climber's Access Society of British Columbia to help protect the rocks and walls where we live, play and learn.

Like a bucket list peak, we believe climate goals should be lofty and hard to reach – otherwise, you’re probably setting the bar too low. Luckily, we have some incredible partners doing big things every day to help push climate efforts in the right direction.   

### Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society
Canada’s only charity dedicated to the protection of public land, freshwater and ocean with a strong national and regional presence across the country. ### Protect Our Winters Canada
At [POW Canada](/en/explore/protect-our-winters-canada) their mission is to turn outdoor enthusiasts into climate advocates. With 13 chapters nationwide, they team up with pro athletes, industry leaders and outdoors enthusiasts to bring real change and political reform to Canada’s fight against climate change. 

### Leave No Trace Canada
Promoting the responsible use of outdoor spaces is a cause that is near and dear to every outdoors enthusiast’s heart. That’s why MEC has been supporting [Leave No Trace Canada](/en/explore/leave-no-trace-canada) through education, research and partnerships since 2006. 

## In-store initiatives 

### Smartwool Second Cut Program  
**When:** April 1 – 30 at all MEC stores  
Only 12% of clothing materials end up getting recycled. It’s time to change that. The Smartwool Second Cut Project™ is back in Canada to **recycle your old socks** into new gear.    

Drop off unwanted socks at your local MEC store; look for the Smartwool Second Cut Project bins. Merino wool is preferred, but all socks are welcome as long as they’re clean: all brands, all colours, all materials, all conditions (single socks are good too). Smartwool will give these socks new life as a new Second Cut™ Project Hike Sock – nice!

### Sterling Rope Recycling Program  
**When:** Ongoing at all MEC stores (excluding HBC locations)  
Back for 2024, MEC will continue to offer a way for members to re-purpose their used climbing rope. Sterling Rope's dynamic rope recycling program gives old ropes new life. Some ropes get upcycled into things like dog leashes or bag handles. Others are melted or ground down into nylon pellets to be turned into carpet fibres, fleece, skateboards and dog toys.  

If you have **dynamic climbing rope** that’s dirty, damaged or ready to retire, this is your chance to get it out of your garage or gear closet and put it to work in a new way. Any brand is accepted, as long as it’s dynamic (not static) climbing rope. Coil or bind your rope (no flaked and loose ropes, please) and drop it off in the big Sterling Rope Monster Box at MEC stores. 

### Edelrid giveback  
**When:** April 1 — 30 in-store and online  
**Edelrid** and **MEC** have teamed up for Earth Month and will be donating $1 from each Edelrid product sold during the month of April to **Protect Our Winters Canada** (up to $2,000).
