Iceland is an absolute dream for multi-day hikers—its rugged landscapes, otherworldly vistas, and dynamic terrain make it one of the most incredible hiking destinations on the planet. From glacial rivers and black sand deserts to multi-coloured rhyolite mountains, steaming geothermal valleys and towering waterfalls, every kilometre reveals breathtaking scenery that feels straight out of a sci-fi movie. But Iceland’s proximity to the Arctic Circle brings challenging and unpredictable weather, making it a true test even for seasoned hikers, let alone those new to multi-day treks.

I joined Amarok Adventures for their [12-day Hidden Trails of Iceland](https://amarok.is/adventure/hidden-trails/) hiking expedition, covering over 160 kilometres of remote trails through the Icelandic Highlands. As a novice to multi-day hiking, packing for Iceland’s constantly shifting conditions was no easy task, but MEC became my one-stop-shop for everything I needed to stay comfortable, dry, and well-equipped for the journey.

In this blog, I’ll break down my multi-day hiking gear packing list, highlighting each essential item to guide anyone planning a trek in Iceland and help you gear up for your next adventure.

Once everything was neatly stowed in my [MEC Zephyr 45L Backpack](/en/product/6020-299/mec-zephyr-45l-backpack-womens), I clocked in at a total weight of around 20.3lbs (without water).

### Multi-Day Hiking Gear Essentials

#### MEC Zephyr 45L Backpack - Women's

Finding the right backpack was critical for the Hidden Trails of Iceland hiking trip. I needed something lightweight, balanced, and comfortable to carry a 20lb load for 12 days, all at the right price point. The [MEC Zephyr 45L Backpack](/en/product/6020-299/mec-zephyr-45l-backpack-womens) was the perfect choice for my trek. By researching [how to pack a backpack](/en/explore/how-to-pack-a-backpack) efficiently and using the adjustable straps and easy-access zippers, I was able to balance the weight properly, ensure a snug fit, and grab my gear on the go without breaking my stride.

We stayed in secluded mountain huts along the trail, equipped with mattresses, kitchens, and cooking supplies. While I can't speak to how this pack would perform on a fully self-sustained trip, I can’t wait to test it out on my next hike-in camping adventure.

- The vertical side zipper made it easy to swap layers or grab my lunch on the go without unpacking the whole bag.
- The trampoline-style back panel suspension system kept the pack off my back and improved airflow, which was a lifesaver in the warmer parts of the hike.
- The front stretch mesh pocket became my Crocs storage for those daily glacial river crossings—super convenient since I hate dangling things off the back of my pack.
- The bottom zippered compartment gave me quick access to my sleeping bag as soon as we arrived at the mountain huts.
- Hip strap pockets were key for keeping snacks, lip balm, and my [Gore-Tex gloves](/en/product/6030-140/arcteryx-venta-glove-unisex) handy.
- The hydration sleeve had a hanger hook and routing strap for my [Hydrapak Shape Shift water bladder](/en/product/5063-871/hydrapak-shape-shift-reservoir) for easy sipping on the go.

#### MEC Ridgelink Trekking Poles - Unisex

Trekking poles are an absolute game-changer on pack hiking trips. When carrying a loaded backpack over uneven terrain, trekking poles provide stability and reduce strain on your knees and joints—especially on the ascents and descents.

Whether I was crossing glacial rivers, navigating rocky, uneven goat paths, or just needing that extra bit of balance during those longer days, the [MEC Ridgelink Trekking Poles](/en/product/6018-880/mec-ridgelink-trekking-poles-unisex) became an essential part of my hiking setup.

### Multi-Day Hiking Outerwear

#### MEC Synergy Gore-Tex Jacket & MEC Synergy Alpine Pants - Womens’

In Iceland, the weather can shift from sunshine to heavy rain and biting Arctic winds in minutes, so having reliable, waterproof, and windproof outerwear is critical. I chose the [MEC Synergy Gore-Tex Jacket](/en/product/6011-165/mec-synergy-gore-tex-jacket-womens) and [MEC Synergy Gore-Tex Alpine Pants](/en/product/6020-750/mec-synergy-gore-tex-alpine-pants-womens) to stay dry and protected throughout my trek.

Both pieces fit perfectly and offered excellent waterproof and windproof protection, keeping me dry in heavy downpours and shielding me from strong winds, while still allowing heat and moisture to escape as I hiked. Paired with [MEC T2 Merino Base Layers](/en/product/6019-331/mec-t2-merino-base-layer-long-sleeve-top-womens) for warmth and sweat-wicking, the combo was ideal for braving Iceland’s challenging elements.

The new bright yellow Alpine Sunflower colour was an added bonus for style points and stood out in my photos against Iceland's moody landscape.

#### MEC Northern Light Hoodie - Women's | MEC

Iceland's high latitude, just shy of the Arctic Circle, is no stranger to cold winds and unpredictable weather. The [MEC Northern Light Hoodie](/en/product/6016-911/mec-northern-light-hoodie-womens) was my go-to for staying warm during this 12-day trek. Lightweight yet impressively warm, it kept me cozy during chilly mornings and evenings and was ideal for winding down at the mountain huts. 

The Northern Light Hoodie fit perfectly under my [Gore-Tex hiking jacket](/en/product/6011-165/mec-synergy-gore-tex-jacket-womens) without adding bulk and worked well as an outer layer when in light drizzle, thanks to its water-repellent finish.

### Multi-Day Hiking Pants:

I packed three pairs of hiking pants for my 12-day hiking trip in Iceland, each with a specific purpose:
- Versatile comfort for changing conditions or river crossings
- Rugged protection for harsh weather
- Lightweight breathability for warmer days on the trail


#### MEC Terrena Stretch Convertible Pants - Women's

I wore my [MEC Terrena Stretch Convertible Pants](/en/product/6000-429/mec-terrena-stretch-convertible-pants-womens?colour=Black) most days of the trip. The convertible design made it easy to zip off into shorts, saving time and effort as I quickly switched from hiking to river crossing mode. They were lightweight, stretchy, and durable enough to cut the wind barreling down from the many glaciers throughout the Icelandic Highlands.

#### Fjallraven Keb Trousers - Women’s

My [Fjallraven Keb Trousers](/en/products/brands/fjallraven) came in handy for the more challenging weather days of the trek. The G-1000 material is built tough enough to shield from strong winds and rain, while offering great breathability while you’re exerting yourself in cold climates—perfect for staying comfortable while on the move. These pants are not insulated though, so you'll start to feel the chill if you stand still for too long. 

The [Fjallraven Keb Trousers](/en/products/brands/fjallraven) are on the heavy side, so if you're trying to cut weight in your pack, you'll either want to wear them most days or opt for something lighter. They’re also stiff and hard to roll up for river crossings, but they dry quickly if you happen to get them wet.

#### MEC Summit Seeker Pants - Women's

The [MEC Summit Seeker Pants](/en/product/6026-415/mec-summit-seeker-pants-womens?colour=Black%2FCast%20Iron) were my go-to for the rare warm, sunny days. They’re so stretchy and comfortable, I even wore them during my 10-hour flight to Iceland. With a DWR finish, they repelled light drizzles well, but I found they weren’t ideal for Iceland’s harsh winds and heavy rain, which are common even in summer. While great for sunny days, Iceland’s unpredictable weather made them less suited for this trip overall.

That being said, they are my top pick for hikes closer to home in British Columbia, especially during the spring, summer, and fall months. They’re perfect for high-elevation hikes where your body heats up from exertion and you need more flexibility and breathability.

- Two large cargo pockets for your phone and other essentials.
- Shock cord cuffs cinch the pant legs tight to keep sand, rocks and other debris out.

#### Arc'teryx Acrux TR Gore-Tex Hiking Boots - Women's

My [Arc’teryx Acrux TR Gore-Tex Hiking Boots](/en/product/6001-087/arcteryx-acrux-tr-gore-tex-hiking-boots-womens?colour=Black%2FBlack) have been my trusted companions for years and continue to deliver on long, challenging hikes. These lightweight, waterproof boots offer excellent heat retention, perfect for cold-weather Iceland treks. Most days, I wore my [mountain biking socks](/en/product/6010-762/wrightsock-eco-explore-crew-socks-unisex?colour=Black) for extra sweat-wicking and switched to [Smartwool hiking socks](/en/product/6014-183/smartwool-performance-light-cushion-tube-stripe-crew-socks-womens) for added warmth in colder and wetter conditions.

The high ankle support gave me the stability I needed when carrying a heavy pack, which helped reduce leg and knee fatigue on long days. Paired with [trekking poles](/en/product/6018-880/mec-ridgelink-trekking-poles-unisex), the [Arc’teryx Acrux TR Gore-Tex Hiking Boots](/en/product/6001-087/arcteryx-acrux-tr-gore-tex-hiking-boots-womens?colour=Black%2FBlack) were energy savers and made uneven ascents and descents way more manageable.

These boots are tough to break in, but their stiffness after 100+ miles of wear means they’ll last for years. If you’re blister-prone or need a pair of hiking boots that break in quickly, opt for something more flexible and do some research on [how to choose hiking boots and shoes](/en/explore/how-to-choose-hiking-boots-or-shoes) for your specific needs. I managed the stiffness of these boots by watching for hot spots, packing a [blister kit](/en/product/5029-764/adventure-medical-kits-blister-medic-kit) and swapping socks during lunch breaks to prevent moisture build-up.

On one particularly nasty rainy day, the boots soaked through, but I was able to remove the soles and dry them overnight in the mountain huts with heaters—problem solved!

Best multi-day hiking gear: Reviews from a 12-day hiking trip in Iceland

As much as we love flashing a route or the view from a portaledge, our favourite thing about climbing is the incredible community. We’re proud to be the destination for Canadian climbers since we hit the scene in the early 70s, but providing top-tier gear for crags and gyms is just one tiny part of our commitment. Before the days of indoor gyms, bouldering mats, stick clips or cams, we were climbers. We’ve cleaned up crags, built trails (also plenty of outhouses) and been access advocates for bluffs and mountainsides across Canada. We’ve championed new brands, field tested products and worked with pro climbers (shout out to MEC Climbing Ambassadors [Sean McColl](/explore/sean-mccoll) and [Emma Contaoe](/explore/emma-contaoe)) to get the details right. We’ve been giving back to the outdoor community since 1987, and we’ll continue to support organizations in their quest to get more people outside, like this year’s [Tommy Caldwell Talks: Ride for the Planet](/article/tommy-caldwell-recap) event, which raised **$5994.70** for **Climbers’ Access Society of British Columbia** (CASBC) and **Van Queer Climbers**. 

This year in celebration of Global Climb Day, we’re hosting our very own **Rock the Climb** event. We’re pumped to be partnering with local climbing groups, brands and athletes to celebrate all things climbing in a few MEC store locations across the country. This month we caught up with some awesome climbing organizations and individuals working hard behind the scenes to protect wild spaces, bring outdoor access to local communities and improve the natural spaces where we get to play, crush and top out. 

As climbing continues to grow in popularity our crags and mountainsides can become crowded, with approach trails and access areas experiencing heavier traffic every year. Luckily there are some incredible folks dedicated to preserving these natural spaces for future generations of crushers to come, while building easier access for today’s climbers all over Canada. We sat down with leaders and volunteers from these climbing orgs to learn more about what goes into preserving and promoting access to our favourite climbing spots – no surprise, it’s a LOT of work.

# Promoting climbing access 
Safety, liability and environmental impact are three of the primary concerns that always come first when negotiating climbing access with land managers and owners. Since climbing orgs typically do not own the land where we’re climbing, establishing proper management plans and collaborating with all stakeholders is just as important as pushing hard for our climbers. As crags become more popular, we sometimes see restrictions and regulations put in place to ensure the natural environment is not disrupted. That’s why it’s so important to respect closing conditions, access conditions, any crag code of ethics and of course, following the [Leave No Trace principles](en/explore/leave-no-trace-canada). After all, climbing in these incredible spaces is a privilege, and we want to ensure future generations get to enjoy chalking up walls and topping out boulders for generations to come.

Some recent success stories in climbing stewardship? “There has been a lot of construction along the Mamquam and Indian FSRs recently. We’ve been able to express the importance of this area to climbers and as a result the parking pullouts have been enlarged, and the dust mitigation work that has been done has also had a positive impact on the North Wall boulders,” says Alex, the chair of Squamish Access Society (SAS) in BC.

# Preserving climbing access 
Every time we haul our crash pads, flash a route or hey, take a whipper or two, we have the folks doing all the work behind the scenes to thank for the preservation of our favourite fun zones. As we all know, climbers make excellent land ambassadors, just ask the **Ontario Alliance of Climbers** (OAC), who have had local climbers participate in clean ups, ecology studies and funded graffiti removal in parks so they can enjoy ‘the glen’. CASBC also hosts trail days, stewardship days, bolting clinics and trail clinics to help locals get involved and feel connected to the care of their local crags. [WAG bags](/product/5027-310/ii-disposable-bag-for-solid-waste) provided by SAS has also helped keep our crags clean from human waste, especially when you're so far from a washroom.  

Sharing the know-how for caring for the planet is crucial to everyone being able to do their part in the outdoors – every little bit counts!

# Route development and maintenance 
Nothing beats a community effort, but sometimes there are some really rad individuals making change happen on their own. At **The Association of Bow Valley Area Rockclimbers** (TABVAR) individual volunteers create new routes and they’re reimbursed for any expenses on routes that are top priority for the local community. Heads up, if you’re planning to develop routes in the Rockies, you better get comfy wielding a crowbar – routes in that area require a LOT of cleaning. Mainly volunteers also work on retrobolting and re-bolting existing routes, which always takes priority over new developments. For our climbers based in Quebec, you can become a certified route setter with the **Fédération québécoise de la montagne et de l'escalade** (FQME) by getting involved with your local climbing club and taking the necessary training. This way you’ll be well-equipped to clean up routes and establish new ones with all the necessary training. 


Notice a bolt or anchor that could use replacing in the Squamish area? [Submit a report](https://squamishaccess.ca/report-a-bad-bolt-or-anchor) on the **Squamish Access Society** (SAS) website and they’ll do their best to rebolt what they can. SAS also works on bringing new life to older crags that may have fallen into disrepair. More operational crags means less crowds at each climb spot, which helps alleviate some of the environmental impact that comes with heavy traffic (oh, and more time on the wall for you).  

To ensure the quality of new and existing routes, TABVAR ensures all routes adhere to the following regulations: 

- The route should be safe for an on-sight lead climb by someone who is competent at the grade 

- The route should be cleaned of all loose rock 

- Pitons and nylon webbing are not acceptable as permanent fixtures on sport routes 

- Avoid squeezing in routes close to or which interfere with established climbs 

- Creating holds or attaching imported holds is contrary to accepted local practice 

- Avoid building routes that create rockfall hazards over established routes or trails

# Community involvement and support  
Want to get involved with your local climbing org? Reach out! Send a message on socials or through their website to join as a member, or you can always donate to keep funding incredible initiatives and projects that put climbers first. This funding goes directly to rebolting missions, bathroom maintenance, trail improvements and tons more. Volunteering for trail maintenance, crag clean-ups, events and education sessions are also great ways to get to know other climbers and show your appreciation for the spaces where we get to send it. You can always connect with your local climbing club for more ways to give back to your community, chances are they’re already involved in some cool projects. 

**Fun fact:** As part of a community involvement initiative, TAVBAR hosted a contest where they auctioned off the naming rights for a new route that a member had put up. The winning donation? $2,500! And so the route “Wish You Were Here” was born, paying homage to the naming convention of the wall which features personal history moments and song names (this one named after the Pink Floyd song). 

# Future projects and missions
Continuing to strengthen local climbing organizations through funding and legal support is the main focus for a few of our climbing orgs. “Shade shelters at some popular crags, expansion and upkeep of the WAG bag program, continuation of our anchor and bolt replacement program, and replacement of some bridges to access climbing areas in the Paradise Valley area,” says Alex, chair of SAS. “Ensuring the ultimate lifespan of the existing hardware in the Bow Valley,” is a priority for TABVAR. As more climbers are getting outside and gyms gain traction and popularity, representing local climbers will only continue to grow as a top priority. “We see our role expanding to ensure that their voices and concerns are heard,” says TABVAR.

Celebrating Global Climb Day 2024

If you hear the phrase, [“Leave No Trace,”](https://leavenotrace.ca/) you probably think about picking up trash on the trails. And you’re right, packing out your garbage is part of Leave No Trace’s third principle: dispose of waste properly. But there is a lot more to Leave No Trace than just trash!

Leave No Trace is a set of seven principles that help us minimize our impact when we spend time outdoors. They include pre-trip actions like how to [plan ahead and prepare](https://leavenotrace.ca/services/1-plan-ahead-and-prepare/) as well as on-trail tips for how to [travel and camp on durable surfaces](https://leavenotrace.ca/the-seven-principles-of-leave-no-trace/) or [respect wildlife.](https://leavenotrace.ca/services/6-respect-wildlife/) And of course info on how to [dispose of waste properly](https://leavenotrace.ca/services/3-dispose-of-waste-properly/). Cleaning up granola bar wrappers and sandwich bags is obvious, but disposing of other kinds of waste can be confusing. 

## What is trash?
To start with, what is trash? I don’t have to tell you that your granola bar wrapper or your water bottle are trash. But are orange peels, peanut shells, and apple cores trash? You might be surprised to find out that even though some items are biodegradable, they are trash and you should pack them out with you. A helpful saying to remember is: “if it doesn’t grow there, it doesn’t go there.” It can take up to 2 years for an orange peel to decompose. In the meantime, it can ruin the natural beauty of outdoor spaces and attract wildlife. 

What about dog poop? Is it trash? While dogs might be animals, they certainly aren’t wild and they aren’t native to our North American ecosystem. Domestic dog poop contains bacteria and parasites that can spread to wildlife. The nitrogen and phosphorus in dog feces can also cause algae blooms in waterways that damage aquatic habitats. Scoop up your pups poop and pack it out with you. To help with the smell, you can drop the doggy bag in a small sealed container, like an old peanut butter jar.


## How to pack out human waste

When you gotta go, you gotta go. But what should you do if you’re out on the trails nowhere near an outhouse? The first thing to do is head 70 paces (about 60 m/200ft) away from the trail, campground, or water sources. Next, use a [trowel](https://www.mec.ca/en/product/6026-684/aluminum-trowel) to dig a cat hole 15 cm/6” deep. Make your deposit, then cover the hole (known as a ‘cat hole’). Over time, your poop will decompose in the soil and it won’t contaminate water sources, trails, or campgrounds. In some high-use or ecological sensitive areas, you may need to pack out your waste in a [Wag Bag](https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5027-310/ii-disposable-bag-for-solid-waste). These bags keep waste and smells contained until you can get to a garbage can. 

While it may decompose in a cat hole, toilet paper will do so very slowly, so it’s better to pack it out in a sealed bag. If you use toilet paper to pee, pack that out too. Please don’t leave it lying on the ground. It can take up to a year for toilet paper to decompose. After you finish going to the bathroom, be sure to use hand sanitizer to clean your hands. When people get sick on a camping trip, they often blame contaminated water, but the culprit is usually poor hygiene.

If you are menstruating, you’ll need to [pack out pads and tampons in a sealed plastic bag](https://www.instagram.com/reel/C9fXON9upPr/). They don’t decompose, so you can’t leave them in an outhouse or cat hole. My pack out bag is a ziploc covered in duct tape so you can’t see what’s inside. If you use a menstrual cup or disc, you can dispose of blood in a 15 cm-deep cat hole that is 70 paces from trails, campground, or water sources.

How to Dispose of Waste on the Trails the Leave No Trace Way

Imagine a future where spending time outside, learning, exploring and playing, is an everyday activity for our kids. That’s [Take Me Outside’s](https://www.mec.ca/en/explore/take-me-outside) mission, and why **they work with a community of schools, educators and organizations to connect more students with nature** and foster a love of the outdoors. This collection might be new, but our work with Take Me Outside has been a longtime partnership – they’ve been **MEC Outdoor Impact partners since 2011**! To celebrate bringing this new collection into MEC stores, we caught up with Take Me Outside (TMO) Executive Director and Founder, Colin Harris.


### Can you give us a quick backstory on how TMO began? Where did the idea spark? 

**Colin:** It all started back in 2011 when I fulfilled a lifelong dream of running across Canada – more than 7,600 km from St. John’s, NL to Victoria, BC. Along the way, we visited 80 schools and met with almost 20,000 students, talking with them about the importance of finding balance between the amount of time they spend in front of screens and the amount of time they spend outside. The final day of my cross-Canada run was in late October. To celebrate the end of the journey and to continue the momentum of raising awareness on this important issue, Take Me Outside Day was established. This campaign, along with other programs and initiatives that have since been established, are at the heart of TMO’s mission to have more learners and educators strengthen their relationship with the outdoors. 

### Why is this work so important? 

**Colin:** A connection to nature and active time outside are essential for healthy childhood development. Making outdoor learning an integral part of every student’s day can increase their overall health and well-being, including their emotional regulation, physical agility, self-esteem, creativity, social emotional skills, resiliency and much more! It’s also highly beneficial for teachers and educators, as they can experience an increase in health and well-being and a decrease in stress after spending time outside. 

### There’s a new book by Jonathan Haidt called The Anxious Generation on the topic of the screen time and smartphones. How does this relate to your work and what implications does this research have for teachers and parents? 

**Colin:** While TMO is focused on learning that can happen outdoors as part of teaching practices, part of the push for this comes from the current imbalance of screen time and the onslaught of technology that children are exposed to daily. While there is a time and place for all the amazing things technology can offer, we must critically examine how these devices and apps are being used with children, and how often. The evidence-based benefits of more time outside are growing, and so our work is trying to address these benefits through a better practice of balance.

### For teachers and parents looking to implement outdoor learning with their kids or students, do you have any resources you can share? 

**Colin:** Our [resource hub](https://takemeoutside.ca/resource-directory/educational-resources/) is a great place for educators and parents to explore resources to implement outdoor learning. Resources can be filtered by region, age group, theme and more. We are regularly updating and adding to our resource directory, so we encourage parents and educators to check back often! 
### With help from other outdoor learning partners, you focus on three central themes. Can you share a bit more on these and the important role they play? 

**Colin:** Outdoor learning can be a transformative way to respectfully and authentically integrate Indigenous perspectives & knowledge into every child’s education, which is a significant component of Truth and Reconciliation, healing and justice on Turtle Island. Providing daily opportunities for learners to move, play and explore outdoors, surrounded by nature, significantly contributes to positive benefits in their overall health and wellbeing. In today’s world, climate change and environmental education is more essential than ever. We support outdoor learning rooted in climate justice that provides inspiring, hopeful approaches to climate action and living more sustainably for folks of all ages. 

### Is there a specific initiative that you’re really excited about in 2024? 

**Colin:** Take Me Outside Day on October 23rd! We’re looking forward to engaging more than half a million educators and learners for a week of learning outside through themes of Indigenous Knowledge, Climate and the Environment and Health and Wellbeing! ### What is the most impactful piece of feedback you’ve received on the work you do? 

**Colin:** We received feedback from an elementary education centre in Ottawa, Ontario who told us they, “love this event (Take Me Outside Day) as it is a reminder to teachers to use the outdoors as another classroom for the students.” That their students, “continue to make discoveries and form relationships with other students in outdoor experiential learning spaces.” Receiving that kind of feedback is always impactful and inspiring.

Your climbing shoes are your most important piece of climbing gear. They form the foundation of your kit and are a necessity for every discipline within climbing. When choosing climbing shoes, whether they’re your first pair or your seventeenth, consider the fit, function, and performance. Those are the three things I thought about when reviewing the shoes in MEC's climbing assortment.

### Climbing shoe fit

Shoes should fit snugly all around your foot, allowing no movement within the shoe and no air spaces or pockets. Read more about [How to choose climbing shoes](https://www.mec.ca/en/explore/choose-your-climbing-shoes). They shouldn’t be so tight that you have hot spots or significant pain, but keep in mind that a snug fit is a precision fit. As climbers, we drive lots of power through our feet, and a precision fit helps harness that power. 

Modern climbing shoes won’t stretch much, especially if they’re lined, but you can expect them to break in and feel 1/3 up to 1/2 size bigger as they mould to your foot. Every shoe brand’s sizing fits a little differently though, so whenever possible, try before you buy!

The shape of your foot and the shape of a shoe need to be in sync for a perfect fit. Most shoes are offered in a high-volume (men’s) option and a low-volume (women's ) option. A shoe built on a low-volume last is usually narrower, with a lower cut, slimmer heel and less volume around the top of the foot.

### Function and performance
Climbing shoes are designed and refined for different types of climbing. The shape affects not just the fit, but the way a shoe performs. It’s important to select the right shoe to suit the climbing you do and the stage you’re at in your climbing progress. 

A flat-lasted, more symmetrical shoe will be more comfortable for beginners or climbers looking for an all-day shoe. They often have better support for edging and vertical climbing, a full outsole, a supportive midsole, and a lace closure. Laces let you ease the fit and you can modify the fit throughout a long day. 


## Top picks for multi-pitch and all-day comfort


#### La Sportiva Finale
A fantastic and popular all-around shoe that prioritizes comfort for long days on the wall or at the gym. The shoes provide great support on a neutral, comfortable last, with a durable 5mm outsole. Laces enable a precise, yet adjustable fit. 

#### Tenaya Tanta 
New to MEC as of November 2023 and proving to be a comfortable, easy-fitting shoe. Tenaya has a great reputation for out-of-the-box comfort, with an adaptable last that works for many foot shapes. This shoe is aggressive with high asymmetry, lots of rubber coverage and a unique moulded 3D heel cup. 

#### Scarpa Drago 
A bouldering weapon that continues to rise in popularity, offered in a regular and low-volume version. The Drago is an aggressively downturned and asymmetrical climbing shoe that performs in steep terrain. ## Special mention: top mid-range performers
In a direct answer to the performance requirements needed in an all-around or mid-level shoe, the all-around shoe options are getting better and better each year as well. Here’s a mix of tried and tested models and new shoes on the block for 2024. 


#### Scarpa Arpia
Brand new this spring, these moderately downturned shoes tackle the balance between performance and comfort. Sticky XS Grip rubber underfoot with a generous rubber toe patch enables most of the footwork that can take your climbing to the next level. Comes in a regular and low-volume fit.   

#### Scarpa Vapor V 
Classic performance shoe with a moderate downturn, moderate asymmetry and moderate stiffness. These shoes are masters of smearing and edging and provide excellent underfoot support thanks to the slightly stiff midsole. Great for all climbing disciplines. 

#### La Sportiva Kubo 
These comfortable workhorses are a fantastic second shoe, with just enough asymmetry and downturn to tackle technical and steep terrain while still providing long-day comfort. They are a do-it-all specialist, with good underfoot support for route climbing and design features such as a large toe rubber patch that won’t hold you back in bouldering either. 

There are so many fantastic climbing shoes on the market, it can be hard to decide what’s the best choice. Many climbers opt for an all-around option, supplemented with a couple pairs of targeted specialty shoes. Others find exactly what they like and stick with the same model forever. The key thing is to figure out what brand and what last fits your foot. Comfort is key. From there, the function of the shoe and the performance you’re looking for will help narrow down the options. Best Climbing Shoes of 2024

This year was another record-breaker: *tickets sold out in 1:27 minutes* – that’s how you know you’re in for a good time. 

MEC and [Edelrid](/products/brands/edelrid) were so stoked to host Tommy Caldwell for his 5th year at MEC Vancouver to speak at his event, Tommy Caldwell Talks: Ride for the Planet. With MEC Climbing Ambassadors, [Emma Contaoe](/explore/emma-contaoe) and [Sean McColl](/explore/sean-mccoll) hosting, Vancouver’s climbing community came together to raise a whopping **$5994.70** for **Van Queer Climbers** and **Climber’s Access Society of British Columbia** – that’s massive!

## With great power comes great responsibility 
Following the success of his hugely popular film, The Dawn Wall, Tommy Caldwell found himself with a new title: movie star. The attention was a little uncomfortable for someone who, “hates wearing a suit,” but this new-found mass popularity meant Tommy had a bigger platform to help him advocate for environmental issues, like forest conservation, which would spark, “what was maybe the coolest trip of [his] life.”  

“One of my main purposes in life is trying to get different people and groups to care about environmental issues,” said Tommy. “I hate politics, but they put together this event, meeting with senators and politicians on Capitol Hill. If you want to make change, it really is all about policy.” 

## Hungry for a big adventure 
“I was hugely adventure starved. I was like, I gotta go big.” And boy, did he ever. 

**The mission:** Help protect the Tongal National Forest and raise awareness of deforestation by cycling across the country from Tommy’s home to climb the Devil’s Thumb, located along the Alaska – British Columbia border. 

**The plan:** “I really just typed ‘Devil’s Thumb’ into Google Maps from my house and hit the ‘bike’ option,” he laughs. “Then I called up my buddy Alex [Honnold] and asked him to join me. He originally said no, you know we both have young families, and we were going to be going for 6 weeks. Then 2 days later he called me back.”  

## Green pointing  
Green pointing means to travel somewhere with lower carbon emissions, like opting to take a sailboat instead of an airplane. This inspired Tommy to cycle to the Devil’s Thumb, instead of flying. “I’m not a biker, I had never done a long bike tour. Beforehand I did two 100-mile bike rides and got completely obliterated,” Tommy says. “We did have a helicopter following us with our gear, so it wasn’t quite a low carbon trip, but more of a proof of concept.”  

Along the way, Tommy and Alex witnessed firsthand the destruction of deforestation. “We’re doing this trip about saving the forest, we climb up to the top of these mountains and we could just see [them] burning. It really impassioned us to keep going.” 

## Type 2 fun  
It may have started as a cycling and climbing trip, but pretty quickly sailing and bushwhacking joined the daily agenda. En route to the Devil’s Thumb: “It started off kind of easy for an hour or two. Then we started getting into thicker and thicker bush – Devil's Club, which is this planet just covered in spines. We spent four days bushwhacking at ¼ mile per hour.” 

*I think we can rethink of climate degradation as a means of using our creativity and energy in life. I think that’s what it’s going to take.

## Reaching the Devil’s Thumb 
“Finally seeing the Devil’s Thumb was one of the most joyful moments of my life ‘cause we had travelled six weeks to get there. If you bushwack and bike a thousand miles, it brings this feeling of joy that’s just unmatched.”  

After six weeks of travel, Tommy and Alex ended up climbing all the peaks in a single day, including the Cat’s Ear, which features an extremely exposed summit with a 7000ft drop over the side.  

“One of my favourite parts about this trip is it actually became such an incredible opportunity. It really combined political activism with big adventure.”  

## Q&A highlights 
**Q: What’s changed the most in your climbing career?**

A: “When I started climbing I was very objective-focused. I wouldn’t really think about the people involved. Now, it’s all about the people, I pick the person and then we figure out what we want to do. It’s about having this adventure with this person.” 

 

**Q: After climbing everything in a day [at The Devil’s Thumb], did you have to retrace your steps, bushwhacking for 6 weeks on the way out?**

A: “We took a helicopter out. I was like ‘I gotta get home or I’m going to get divorced’.”  

Big laughs for this one.  

 

**Q: What aspect of climate advocacy resonates the most with you? Where does your focus live?**

A: “My niche right now is land protection. It overlaps with climbing the most.” 

**Q: What makes a good adventure?**

A: “If you plan too much it’s not really an adventure. You gotta strike the right balance. Big trips like that there’s a lot of suffering involved, you gotta have that type 2 fun mentality because in the moment it’s not always fun.” 
 
“For big adventure it needs to have magnitude and creativity,” said Tommy.  

“I think that was my favourite answer of the night,” said MEC Climbing Amabassador, Emma.

Add to your kit this universal CO2 Inflator along with a [CO2 cartridge](https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5048-967/co2-cartridge). A CO2 inflator is the fastest way to inflate a tube in case of a flat tire. Simply screw your cartridge on the threaded side, then press the inflator head on the valve like a regular pump.

Once the air starts releasing into the tire, hold the inflator firmly while it inflates, with another hand on the tire to feel the pressure. Watch out for your fingers as the cartridge will become very cold when the air is released.

**Pro tip**: Before installing the new tube onto the rim, blow in the tube with your mouth to give it a round shape (or with a hand pump if you have one). This will help you place the tube properly inside the tire before adding pressure.

If CO2 cartridges are fast, they are not always reliable and certainly not forgiving if not used properly. I strongly recommend that you always carry a hand pump (a mini pump that fits in your bag). It’s easier to use and it will help you make sure the tube is placed correctly inside the tire as you add pressure.

This mini pump has a reversible valve head to fit any valve type, Presta or Schrader.

**Pro tip:** If you need to choose between the inflator and the pump, pick the hand pump.

If cycling has become your hobby, I highly recommend that you get a set of Allen Key Hex wrenches. A multi-tool would do the job in most cases but the L-shape and the rounded ball at the end are just so much more handy in some cases. I love how easy it is to just spin the wrench between my fingers rather than fiddling for minutes with a bulky multi-tool. Adjusting handlebars (with cables) and installing bottle cages are particularly easier to do with a rounded ball head L-shape wrench because of the limited space.

Use this Allen key 7-piece set at home to adjust a derailer, adjust your bike fit position, install accessories, etc.

This set includes an 8mm hex to remove your pedals (most modern pedals use an 8mm hex wrench) in case you want to travel with your bike.

**Pro tip:** Not all Allen Key set includes the 8mm hex wrench. It’s great to have, but you could also purchase a pedal wrench (8mm hex) later when you need it.

Look for the letters “HP,” meaning High-Pressure (as opposed to HV, which refers to High-Volume). Even if you choose to carry a [**CO2 inflator**](https://www.mec.ca/en/product/6025-541/co2-inflator) and a cartridge, I recommend that you carry a hand pump to start inflating the tube and place it correctly inside the tire.

I have used Lezyne hand pumps for many years and they are the most preferred hand pumps by many cyclists. Its unique flexible hose allows for more movement in your hands, making it easy to pump to high pressure. This model can inflate up to 160 psi.

##### [**Park Tool VP-1 Vulcanizing Patch Kit**](https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5048-272/vp-1-vulcanizing-patch-kit)

From experience, the pre-glued patches that come with repair kits are okay but they often start leaking again, forcing you to ultimately change your tube. This is why I like to keep this repair kit at home for a long-lasting tube repair.

Clean the tube with some alcohol, apply the glue (watch your fingers because this is sticky!), then stick the patch and let it dry. Test your tube before putting it back in your tire. I inflate it and leave it hanging for 48 hours. If it’s still holding air, then you’re good to go.

## **Tire levers**

You should change your tires every 5,000 to 8,000 km, or every year. If you change your tires more than once a year, I recommend getting a set of steel tire levers. It’s so much easier to remove the tires with less strength because steel doesn’t bend like plastic does. Changing tires is a breeze with those tire levers!

## **Repair stand**

Most adjustments don’t require a repair stand but sometimes it’s nice to have one. A bike work stand will be helpful for jobs like derailer tuning, changing cables or removing a bottom bracket.

When choosing the right repair stand, ask yourself how often you think you will use it, and do you have room to leave it (in the garage for example) or would you prefer to store it away when not in use?
