If you hear the phrase, [“Leave No Trace,”](https://leavenotrace.ca/) you probably think about picking up trash on the trails. And you’re right, packing out your garbage is part of Leave No Trace’s third principle: dispose of waste properly. But there is a lot more to Leave No Trace than just trash!

Leave No Trace is a set of seven principles that help us minimize our impact when we spend time outdoors. They include pre-trip actions like how to [plan ahead and prepare](https://leavenotrace.ca/services/1-plan-ahead-and-prepare/) as well as on-trail tips for how to [travel and camp on durable surfaces](https://leavenotrace.ca/the-seven-principles-of-leave-no-trace/) or [respect wildlife.](https://leavenotrace.ca/services/6-respect-wildlife/) And of course info on how to [dispose of waste properly](https://leavenotrace.ca/services/3-dispose-of-waste-properly/). Cleaning up granola bar wrappers and sandwich bags is obvious, but disposing of other kinds of waste can be confusing. 

## What is trash?
To start with, what is trash? I don’t have to tell you that your granola bar wrapper or your water bottle are trash. But are orange peels, peanut shells, and apple cores trash? You might be surprised to find out that even though some items are biodegradable, they are trash and you should pack them out with you. A helpful saying to remember is: “if it doesn’t grow there, it doesn’t go there.” It can take up to 2 years for an orange peel to decompose. In the meantime, it can ruin the natural beauty of outdoor spaces and attract wildlife. 

What about dog poop? Is it trash? While dogs might be animals, they certainly aren’t wild and they aren’t native to our North American ecosystem. Domestic dog poop contains bacteria and parasites that can spread to wildlife. The nitrogen and phosphorus in dog feces can also cause algae blooms in waterways that damage aquatic habitats. Scoop up your pups poop and pack it out with you. To help with the smell, you can drop the doggy bag in a small sealed container, like an old peanut butter jar.


## How to pack out human waste

When you gotta go, you gotta go. But what should you do if you’re out on the trails nowhere near an outhouse? The first thing to do is head 70 paces (about 60 m/200ft) away from the trail, campground, or water sources. Next, use a [trowel](https://www.mec.ca/en/product/6026-684/aluminum-trowel) to dig a cat hole 15 cm/6” deep. Make your deposit, then cover the hole (known as a ‘cat hole’). Over time, your poop will decompose in the soil and it won’t contaminate water sources, trails, or campgrounds. In some high-use or ecological sensitive areas, you may need to pack out your waste in a [Wag Bag](https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5027-310/ii-disposable-bag-for-solid-waste). These bags keep waste and smells contained until you can get to a garbage can. 

While it may decompose in a cat hole, toilet paper will do so very slowly, so it’s better to pack it out in a sealed bag. If you use toilet paper to pee, pack that out too. Please don’t leave it lying on the ground. It can take up to a year for toilet paper to decompose. After you finish going to the bathroom, be sure to use hand sanitizer to clean your hands. When people get sick on a camping trip, they often blame contaminated water, but the culprit is usually poor hygiene.

If you are menstruating, you’ll need to [pack out pads and tampons in a sealed plastic bag](https://www.instagram.com/reel/C9fXON9upPr/). They don’t decompose, so you can’t leave them in an outhouse or cat hole. My pack out bag is a ziploc covered in duct tape so you can’t see what’s inside. If you use a menstrual cup or disc, you can dispose of blood in a 15 cm-deep cat hole that is 70 paces from trails, campground, or water sources.

## Tools & repair kit

Add to your kit this universal CO2 Inflator along with a [CO2 cartridge](https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5048-967/co2-cartridge). A CO2 inflator is the fastest way to inflate a tube in case of a flat tire. Simply screw your cartridge on the threaded side, then press the inflator head on the valve like a regular pump.

Once the air starts releasing into the tire, hold the inflator firmly while it inflates, with another hand on the tire to feel the pressure. Watch out for your fingers as the cartridge will become very cold when the air is released.

**Pro tip**: Before installing the new tube onto the rim, blow in the tube with your mouth to give it a round shape (or with a hand pump if you have one). This will help you place the tube properly inside the tire before adding pressure.

If CO2 cartridges are fast, they are not always reliable and certainly not forgiving if not used properly. I strongly recommend that you always carry a hand pump (a mini pump that fits in your bag). It’s easier to use and it will help you make sure the tube is placed correctly inside the tire as you add pressure.

This mini pump has a reversible valve head to fit any valve type, Presta or Schrader.

**Pro tip:** If you need to choose between the inflator and the pump, pick the hand pump.


## Chain lubricants and cleaners

If cycling has become your hobby, I highly recommend that you get a set of Allen Key Hex wrenches. A multi-tool would do the job in most cases but the L-shape and the rounded ball at the end are just so much more handy in some cases. I love how easy it is to just spin the wrench between my fingers rather than fiddling for minutes with a bulky multi-tool. Adjusting handlebars (with cables) and installing bottle cages are particularly easier to do with a rounded ball head L-shape wrench because of the limited space.

Use this Allen key 7-piece set at home to adjust a derailer, adjust your bike fit position, install accessories, etc.

This set includes an 8mm hex to remove your pedals (most modern pedals use an 8mm hex wrench) in case you want to travel with your bike.

**Pro tip:** Not all Allen Key set includes the 8mm hex wrench. It’s great to have, but you could also purchase a pedal wrench (8mm hex) later when you need it.


## **Chain lubricant & cleaners**

Look for the letters “HP,” meaning High-Pressure (as opposed to HV, which refers to High-Volume). ##### [**Park Tool VP-1 Vulcanizing Patch Kit**](https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5048-272/vp-1-vulcanizing-patch-kit)

From experience, the pre-glued patches that come with repair kits are okay but they often start leaking again, forcing you to ultimately change your tube. This is why I like to keep this repair kit at home for a long-lasting tube repair.

Clean the tube with some alcohol, apply the glue (watch your fingers because this is sticky!), then stick the patch and let it dry. Test your tube before putting it back in your tire. I inflate it and leave it hanging for 48 hours. If it’s still holding air, then you’re good to go.

## **Tire levers**

You should change your tires every 5,000 to 8,000 km, or every year. If you change your tires more than once a year, I recommend getting a set of steel tire levers. It’s so much easier to remove the tires with less strength because steel doesn’t bend like plastic does. Changing tires is a breeze with those tire levers!

## **Repair stand**

Most adjustments don’t require a repair stand but sometimes it’s nice to have one. A bike work stand will be helpful for jobs like derailer tuning, changing cables or removing a bottom bracket.

When choosing the right repair stand, ask yourself how often you think you will use it, and do you have room to leave it (in the garage for example) or would you prefer to store it away when not in use?

# **Off-road cycling tool kit**

Use these pliers to undo a master link (quick-link) on your chain to replace it with a new one. **Pro tip:** I recommend that you first learn how to perform a brake bleeding job with someone who has experience doing it before doing it yourself. Making a mistake, such as dropping fluid by accident in your shifter, could damage your shifters.

A solid [bikepacking checklist](/en/explore/bikepacking-checklist) is a fantastic start for your off-road missions. But knowing exactly what to choose is another story. From bike bags to GPS units, here are features and products we recommend when building a bikepacking setup that’s lightweight, packable and reliable.

## Bike bags and racks 
Essential for bikepacking (obviously). Whether you opt for saddle packs or a rack setup, some tips on what to look for: 

### Saddle packs
Saddle packs are by far one of the most popular bikepacking bag options. They’re easy to install and don’t require additional mounting points or racks. Features you’ll likely want: 
- Waterproofing is a must (rainy days and muddy tires mean your saddle pack will get wet).
- Roll closure systems can accommodate tons of gear and you can roll them up tight when less stuffed. 
- Seat post and seat rail straps are essential. Cinch as solidly as possible to prevent tail wag.
- Many saddle packs include elastic cords or daisy chains. Elastic cords are great for stuffing a jacket into quickly, while daisy chains are good for clipping on tricky-to-pack things like camp mugs.
- Internal stiffeners provide extra rigidity to the bag and prevent it from sagging under load.

Another option is a “floating” rack design that attaches to your bike’s seat stays, which provides excellent stability. ### Handlebar bags 
Tied with seat packs as the bag you’re most likely to see on a bikepacking rig. You can get handlebar bags for both drop- and straight-style bars.
- For smaller loads, a simple strap that attaches to handlebars and the headtube works.
- Make sure your bar bag is waterproof (keep those snacks dry).
- Zippered or flap closures do the trick for tidy loads. For hauling more, a bigger bag with a roll-closure is best.
- The front of your bike is stable, so it can handle cargo if you opt for a rack or cradle system. 
- With rack or cradle systems, opt for a heavy-duty drybag with roll closure system.

### Frame packs
Attached directly to your bike frame, a frame pack is designed to fit in the triangle formed by the top tube, seat tube and down tube of your bike. 
- The longer shape allows for items such as pumps or tent poles to be strapped to or stored with ease.
- Available as a full frame pack or a half frame pack, choose a size that best fits your bike and your capacity needs 
- Maintains the bike's low center of gravity, making it the ideal place to pack heavier items.

## Lightweight tents
While you can go hyper-light with a bivy or hammock, the majority of us will opt for a light backpacking tent. Some things to consider:

- One- or two-person tents that pack small and are used by backpackers work well.
- A three-season tent is recommended.
- Ensure the tent includes a waterproof fly with fully taped seams.
- Look for a tent roughly in the 2kg range. Skip anything well above the 3 or 4kg mark.
- Any good backpacking tent will include a compact stuff sack. However, it’s possible to pack a tent even tighter. If need be, strap your tent poles to your saddle bag, or wrap them and secure to your top tube. You may be able to save a good chunk of space.

## Sleeping bags and pads 
Ideally, you want a sleeping bag that’s warm enough for spring, summer and fall camping, but not so heavy it weighs you down. A sleeping pad is a must (just don’t opt for a mega-sized car camping one).

- A nice, light sleeping bag is usually rated around 0°C to -2°C.
- Target weight for a lightweight sleeping bag is around 900–1100 grams.
- Make sure your bag has a durable water repellent (DWR) treatment.
- Sleeping pads with insulation are ideal, but you may be able to go lighter if hot weather is likely.
- A light sleeping pad should pack roughly to the size of a Nalgene bottle.

## Camp kitchen gear 
If you’re gonna bike, you gotta eat. Pack light, but be sure to bring essentials for good camp eating.

## What are your top 3 backcountry travel tips?  

Avalanches might not be the first thing on your mind when you're exploring mountains, but you don’t have to ski or snowboard in big terrain to be at risk. Lots of hiking and snowshoe trails are in avalanche terrain and knowing how to stay safe is an important part of travelling in the winter environment.  

1. Take an [Avalanche Canada Training course](https://www.avalanche.ca/training). Avalanche Skills Training 1 (AST 1) is a must for everyone recreating in the backcountry. You’ll learn how to recognize avalanche terrain, understand forecasts, plan trips and perform a companion rescue. It’s also a great way to meet adventure partners.  
2. Check out our online tutorial, [Avy Savvy](https://avysavvy.avalanche.ca/). It’s a free, interactive introduction to avalanche safety. It’s also a great refresher for those with some education.  
3. Being prepared for the season starts long before the trailhead. We never head out until we’ve checked all of our gear, replaced batteries in our transceivers, and most importantly, done a few companion rescue practice scenarios with our group.

## How does someone check an avalanche forecast throughout the season?
Forecasting begins November 24, 2023. Forecasts are issued every day at 4pm (a little later in Newfoundland) for the following day and include an outline of expected trends for two days after that. This three-day forecast allows you to plan ahead.  

Visit [avalanche.ca](https://avalanche.ca/mountain-information-network) (for info from forecasters in Quebec, visit [avalanchequebec.ca](https://avalanchequebec.ca/bulletin-davalanche/)) or use the [Avalanche Canada mobile app](https://app.avalanche.ca/) on iOS or Android. The app is also available from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. Make sure to check for the Avalanche Canada logo to download the right one. Use the site or app to find a region on the map or by searching a place name, then open the forecast for that specific region. We use a flexible forecasting system, so the regions change with conditions and the map may look different from day to day. You can also use the Mountain Information Network (MIN) to get updates as users add them.  

## Tell us more about the MIN – how does it help?  
The [Mountain Information Network](https://www.avalanche.ca/mountain-information-network) is a free service for getting and sharing real-time, location-specific information. It’s an important tool for recreationists and forecasters to share info about riding, ice, avalanche, snowpack and weather conditions plus incidents in real time. You can post and view info on our website or through the app.  

Sharing information helps others make better decisions about where and when to ride safely. It also helps forecasters provide better public information in areas where data sources are scarce, such as the northern Rocky Mountains and parts of the southern Purcells.

## Other than the big 3, any other safety gear you recommend?  
If you’re in avalanche terrain, you must carry the right gear and know how to use it. Everyone in your group needs essential rescue gear (avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe) and the training to use it effectively in an emergency.  

Other safety tools to consider:  
- [Avalanche airbags](https://www.mec.ca/en/products/snow/avalanche-safety-gear/avalanche-air-bag/c/2084) can help reduce the severity of the effects of being caught in an avalanche by reducing burial depth or even preventing burial. It’s important to remember though that they aren’t a “silver bullet” for avalanche safety.  
- [Emergency communication devices](https://www.mec.ca/en/products/electronics/satellite-communicators-and-locators/c/1149), though not a substitute for [companion rescue](https://www.avalanche.ca/glossary#companion-rescue) or self-sufficiency, being able to communicate in an emergency is valuable. GPS-based devices that rely on a commercial satellite network allow you to communicate short text messages and/or location coordinates to friends and family or send emergency calls for help.  

## What’s the biggest myth you want to bust?  
There are so many backcountry safety and avalanche myths – we could write an entire blog post about them. Probably the most important one: if your group got back safe, don’t assume you didn’t make any mistakes. We all get lucky sometimes. When you debrief at the end of the day, it’s valuable to discuss where the group might have made poor choices and got away with it.  

We also want to remind people that avalanche terrain doesn’t need to be in front of you. Overhead hazard can be easy to overlook when planning a route, especially when you’re not planning to enter avalanche terrain directly.  

## Favourite snacks for a backcountry trip?  
Our team has lots of opinions about backcountry snacks, but our go-to choices include dried mango, peanut butter and crackers, and chocolate covered almonds. They’re easy to eat on the skin track and provide lots of quick energy.  

On particularly chilly days, consider bringing a hot beverage. Nothing hits the spot on a cold day quite like a flask full of hot chocolate, tea or coffee.  

## Must-pack items (beyond the obvious) for a ski trip?  
There are so many things to make your trip safer and easier (e.g. extra layers, spare gloves) it’s hard to narrow it down. But we’d highly recommend a first aid kit and a gear repair kit. If you’re staying in a lodge or hut, earplugs are a small addition that can change your entire trip experience!

How to get ready for winter backcountry adventures

What’s the best kept secret about backcountry hut trips? It’s not just about the skiing. 

“People who’ve done multiple hut trips will all tell you: getting to the hut is only half the fun,” says the [Alpine Club of Canada](/en/explore/alpine-club-of-canada) (ACC), which operates the largest network of backcountry huts in North America. “It’s easy to visualize a backcountry trip as being all about the skiing, and to think of the hut as just a place to sleep, eat and dry out gear. Truth is, time in the hut with family and friends are some of the most memorable parts of a trip.” 

We couldn’t agree more. And hey, if hut memories are topped off with skiing a few lines of cold blower pow, all the better. 

To help you prepare, we called in MEC Ambassadors [Bruce Kirkby](/en/explore/bruce-kirkby) and [Yuki Tsubota](/en/explore/yuki-tsubota), along with folks from the ACC for tips on how to plan, how to book, and the number one item to bring outside of ski gear. 

## Prepare your party 

First up: assemble a group of compatible people – you will be sharing a cozy space, after all. “Make sure it’s people you want to hang out, cook and live with, not just ski with,” the ACC says.  

Along with being fun, ski-loving folks, it’s essential that everyone has taken an Avalanche Skills Training (AST) program. Start with courses through [Avalanche Canada](/en/explore/avalanche-canada); MEC is proud to be the primary sponsor of their training program. Afterward, practice using your [safety gear](/en/explore/avalanche-safety-gear-and-training) and skills with your group. Research where you’re going and know the conditions too.

> “Rather than heading out with an entire group of first-timers, ensure there are some backcountry veterans along. Equally important, make sure the entire group’s risk tolerance and goals align.” – Bruce 

## Book early 

Hut reservations can fill up fast. Start planning a few months in advance if possible. Tip: ACC members can book huts before non-members, and they save about $10 per night as well. “Know the cancellation policy for each hut,” Yuki says. “I find it can make it a bit easier to plan in advance without being locked in, especially when you have a larger group of people.” Organize everyone’s details (names, contact info, membership numbers) before you book the hut. 

Because hut trips generally have to be booked so far in advance, have a range of objectives in mind. “If weather and avalanche conditions don't cooperate,” said Bruce, “you should have safe options that are amenable to the entire group – rather than find yourself dragged into unsafe conditions because of plans made months earlier.”

## Get a little gourmet 

If you’re not focused on going ultralight, skip the dehydrated meals and bring real food. We’ve heard of some epic hut meals, from a full turkey dinner at the Wendy Thompson Hut to backpacks of cheese fondue for twenty.  

Shared meals with your group are awesome. Put together a Google doc to divvy up food duty (it also means you don’t have to cook every night). Also bring plenty of coffee and snacks, plus extras to share. “I can only handle so many bars and sweet stuff during the day,” said Bruce, “so I always have a bag of nuts, and a bag of landjaeger and cheese handy.”

## Know your hut etiquette 

Short version: pitch in, be respectful, and carry out all your unused food. Being a good hut visitor and roomie makes a huge difference to everyone having a good time. Hut etiquette is such a big deal that the ACC put together a [two-part blog](https://blog.alpineclubofcanada.ca/blog/2019/1/28/your-voice-on-hut-etiquette-pt1) series of stories and tips from their members. A few key ones:  

- **Give a warm welcome**: When new people arrive, show them the ropes: how to get water, where food goes, and helpful tips. 

- **Pitch in with hut chores**: Fill the water buckets, carry firewood, clean up dishes that aren’t yours. It’ll all come back to you. 

- **Respect bedtime**: “I'm all for people staying up late but do it in a respectable manner,” says Yuki. “There's nothing worse than starting an early ski day tired from not getting a good sleep.”

## Bring the right gear 

Use our [backcountry ski touring checklist](/en/explore/ski-touring-checklist) to cover all your basics, safety and technical gear. Then plan your comfort zones: stuff to bring for hanging out at the hut. A few tips from hut pros: 

- **Hut booties**: “The number one item for any hut trip in any season is [hut booties](/en/product/5055-859/hut-booties?filters%5Bbrand%5D%5B0%5D=mec&colour=Obsidian),” says the ACC. They’re like sleeping bags for your feet and top everyone’s list of comfort items.  

- **Cozy PJs**: “I bring cozy long underwear tops and bottoms (generally [MEC T2 Base layers](/en/products/clothing/base-layers-and-underwear/base-layers-and-underwear/c/273/warmer)) to use exclusively as pyjamas,” says Bruce. 

- **Games**: Easy to carry games are a great way to meet people and hang out. Some faves? Bananagrams, Pass the Pigs, Monopoly Deal, Uno or travel cribbage. 

- **Creature comforts**: Like hand sanitizer, a face mask, ear plugs and toilet paper.

We asked the ACC for a few hut tidbits to help you plan your winter and summer trips (yep, huts are great for hiking too!): 

- **Heats and eats**: All ACC huts have mattresses as well as cooking and eating utensils. Most have stoves (with fuel) and are heated, with firewood or propane provided.

Get ready to roll. Whether your city calls it Bike Month, Go By Bike Week or Bike to Work Week, it’s the time of year when people discover (or rediscover) the efficiency and fun of life on two wheels. Here are a few helpful tips to boost your pedal power.

## 1. Find a great route
A little planning goes a long way. There’s a good chance the route you drive or take transit won’t be best route for biking. Find your local cycling map to see what infrastructure exists; for example, Toronto has its own [Toronto Cycling Map](https://www.toronto.ca/services-payments/streets-parking-transportation/cycling-in-toronto/cycling-google-map/). You can usually link routes together to avoid busy traffic areas. 

Google maps also has a “biking” layer (under map details) to help you create a route, though be warned: sometimes it can give some odd suggestions for riding, so you may want to use it as a starting point and fine-tune your own route from there.

One of the best route-finding tips? Ask a fellow bike commuter. They’ll be more than happy to share advice on favourite quiet bike lanes and ways to skirt around hills. 

## 2. Ease into it
When you’re planning your rides, give yourself a bit more time than you think you need. It’s totally fine to relax and not race to your destination – in fact, that’s part of what makes biking enjoyable. You may need a couple minutes when you arrive to change and lock up too.

If you’re new to your bike route, it may be useful to try some practice rides on quiet weekends to get the hang of it before bike lanes get busy at rush hour. And if the idea of biking a full week feels outside of your comfort zone, try a single day out to start. 

## 3. Get your bike ready
You don’t need a fancy bike to ride to work, but you do need a functional one. First, pump up your tires – they’ll lose air pressure even if your bike was just sitting in your garage or bike storage all winter. Next, give your chain some TLC. It likely needs a bit of lube and it might even benefit from a nice cleaning. For squeaks and creaks you can’t fix, stop by your [local MEC bike shop](/en/explore/bike-service) for a tune up.

Finally: accessorize. You’ll need a bell, front white light and rear red light. A [well-fitting helmet](/en/explore/how-to-choose-a-cycling-helmet) is always recommended.

## 4. Get yourself ready
There’s a huge range of personal preferences for what to wear for biking to work, school or on errands. Some people like to ride in their everyday clothes; others prefer bike tights and cycling jackets, then change at their destination. Just remember you want to be comfortable on the bike as well as when you reach your destination. Many bike trips are also short commutes, so many riders don’t feel like they need to shower when they arrive. 

You’ll also want a way to bring lunch, your laptop and maybe a change of clothes. Panniers and a rack keep the load off your back, while a backpack is more convenient for walking around at your destination.

## 5. Lock it up, register your ride
Look into where to park your bike at your destination. There might be a special bike room, bike lockers or a covered space with bike racks; ask the building manager or other riders if you’re not sure. 

A bike lock is a must for public places and not a bad idea for any bike storage room either. Most U-locks provide a high degree of security – check out our article on [choosing a lock and how to lock up your bike](/en/explore/locking-your-bike) for great tips and advice. 

Another must many riders don’t know about: register your bike! [529 Garage](https://project529.com/garage) is a free service that lets the bike community and even police know if your bike has been stolen – and more importantly, helps with recovery if it’s been found. Your area may also have their own bike-theft prevention program in place.

## 6. Build your skills
Just because you know how to ride a bike doesn’t mean you know how to safely ride in a city. Maybe it’s been a while since you’ve biked, maybe you’re in a new neighourhood, or maybe you’ve never ridden near traffic before. If you’re not feeling confident, look into bike classes (yes, they exist for adults, and they’re fantastic). Check with your local or provincial bike advocacy group for info; many offer training materials and education.

Remember to follow the rules of the road, know how to turn at intersections, and know how to safely move with and overtake other road users. Be especially careful around parked cars, where drivers may be entering traffic suddenly, or where doors may be opening into your path. Be aware that some drivers fail to yield right-of-way, so making eye contact with drivers is big; assume that no one sees you. Wherever you ride – quiet street or busy bike route – you’ll want to communicate with drivers and other cyclists. Shoulder check and brush up on your hand signals (left-hand turn, stop, right-hand turn) and use them.

6 tips to get ready for bike to work week

It’s hard to ignore the effects of climate change as a climber. My hometown of Estes Park in Colorado, and my favourite climbing spot Yosemite, are turning from lush forests into deserts. I spend far too much time these days avoiding smoky skies. The bigger, more frozen mountains I like to climb on in Patagonia and the Alps are melting out and falling apart. Glaciers are receding rapidly.

So what’s a climber to do about it all? I started by opening my eyes and listening – being an Ambassador for Patagonia, or even a consumer of their stories, can be an amazing education. The aha moment for me was all about my ability to effect change. I joined the Access Fund to lobby about climate change. I started working with outdoor brands to be more sustainable. I’m also spreading the word to the climbing community about how their choices can have an impact. I feel like my knowledge is still pretty small and I’m just getting started, but the goal of doing my part to save the world sure does feel like the right way to live.

> Climbing makes for the best stories, so climbers become great storytellers. If we create a culture of care for the planet within our sport, maybe we can spread that story and message to a wider audience.

## How to look after your favourite climbing spots
As climbing areas get more popular, there becomes a need for stewards and caretakers of these crags. If this is done well, then these crags stay open. If it’s done poorly and climbers trash these places, they get closed. There are local climbing organizations in most regions doing great work. Track them down, donate your time and money.

At the crag, there are dozens of practices I could list to lower your impact. But I think the main way to look at it is like this: if you think of going to the crags as if you are visiting someone else’s home, the right practices will become obvious.

## Think about your gear choices
Choosing products that were designed with the environment in mind sends a message to companies, which in turn can spread to other companies and lawmakers to help change the way gear is made. A couple of brands doing incredible work in the sustainability space are Patagonia and Edelrid.

Patagonia is a gold standard in terms of using business to look for environmental solutions. They’re changing the systems and supply chains that affect all clothing and textile manufacturing. A few examples: testing regenerative organic cotton farming, running one of the largest apparel repair centres in North America, finding ways to source recycled materials, and vowing to be carbon neutral by 2025.

Edelrid is pioneering ways to make climbing equipment and hardware more sustainable, which is especially tricky when making equipment that your life depends on. Their track record with things like water and chemical reduction within their supply chain far surpasses any of their competitors. > To help apparel last longer, I wash my clothes less and line dry. One exception is DWR waterproof-breathables – to make them last, dry them in the dryer occasionally to refresh the waterproofing.

## My top three more sustainable gear picks
