A solid [bikepacking checklist](/en/explore/bikepacking-checklist) is a fantastic start for your off-road missions. But knowing exactly what to choose is another story. From bike bags to GPS units, here are features and products we recommend when building a bikepacking setup that’s lightweight, packable and reliable.

## Bike bags and racks 
Essential for bikepacking (obviously). Whether you opt for saddle packs or a rack setup, some tips on what to look for: 

### Saddle packs
Saddle packs are by far one of the most popular bikepacking bag options. They’re easy to install and don’t require additional mounting points or racks. Features you’ll likely want: 
- Waterproofing is a must (rainy days and muddy tires mean your saddle pack will get wet).
- Roll closure systems can accommodate tons of gear and you can roll them up tight when less stuffed. 
- Seat post and seat rail straps are essential. Cinch as solidly as possible to prevent tail wag.
- Many saddle packs include elastic cords or daisy chains. Elastic cords are great for stuffing a jacket into quickly, while daisy chains are good for clipping on tricky-to-pack things like camp mugs.
- Internal stiffeners provide extra rigidity to the bag and prevent it from sagging under load.

### Seat pack + rear rack combos 
For extra security and hauling lots of cargo on big trips, a seat post/bag combo does wonders. Another option is a “floating” rack design that attaches to your bike’s seat stays, which provides excellent stability. Some floating racks include additional mounting points for smaller bags – a solid option for multi-days with more gear.

### Handlebar bags 
Tied with seat packs as the bag you’re most likely to see on a bikepacking rig. You can get handlebar bags for both drop- and straight-style bars.
- For smaller loads, a simple strap that attaches to handlebars and the headtube works.
- Make sure your bar bag is waterproof (keep those snacks dry).
- Zippered or flap closures do the trick for tidy loads. For hauling more, a bigger bag with a roll-closure is best.
- The front of your bike is stable, so it can handle cargo if you opt for a rack or cradle system. 
- With rack or cradle systems, opt for a heavy-duty drybag with roll closure system.

### Frame packs
Attached directly to your bike frame, a frame pack is designed to fit in the triangle formed by the top tube, seat tube and down tube of your bike. 
- The longer shape allows for items such as pumps or tent poles to be strapped to or stored with ease.
- Available as a full frame pack or a half frame pack, choose a size that best fits your bike and your capacity needs 
- Maintains the bike's low center of gravity, making it the ideal place to pack heavier items.

## Lightweight tents
While you can go hyper-light with a bivy or hammock, the majority of us will opt for a light backpacking tent. Some things to consider:

- One- or two-person tents that pack small and are used by backpackers work well.
- A three-season tent is recommended.
- Ensure the tent includes a waterproof fly with fully taped seams.
- Look for a tent roughly in the 2kg range. Skip anything well above the 3 or 4kg mark.
- Any good backpacking tent will include a compact stuff sack. However, it’s possible to pack a tent even tighter. If need be, strap your tent poles to your saddle bag, or wrap them and secure to your top tube. You may be able to save a good chunk of space.

## Sleeping bags and pads 
Ideally, you want a sleeping bag that’s warm enough for spring, summer and fall camping, but not so heavy it weighs you down. A sleeping pad is a must (just don’t opt for a mega-sized car camping one).

- A nice, light sleeping bag is usually rated around 0°C to -2°C.
- Target weight for a lightweight sleeping bag is around 900–1100 grams.
- Make sure your bag has a durable water repellent (DWR) treatment.
- Sleeping pads with insulation are ideal, but you may be able to go lighter if hot weather is likely.
- A light sleeping pad should pack roughly to the size of a Nalgene bottle.

## Camp kitchen gear 
If you’re gonna bike, you gotta eat. Pack light, but be sure to bring essentials for good camp eating. 
- When it comes to stoves, single burner setups are best. They’re light, pack small and reliable. 
- If you pack a pot, pack as much of your cook setup into it (stove included, if room allows). 
- Some companies offer a “everything in a pot” cookware setup including collapsible bowls and mugs.
- Don’t forget coffee! Aeropress and pourover setups are a fantastic and lightweight option. 
- Make sure you have a plan for keeping bears and critters out of your food.

## GPS bike computer 
There are tons of options in this category with a lot of personal preferences in play. Be sure that whatever you choose has preloaded maps or the ability to upload maps before your ride. A head unit with integrated solar charging is a huge plus.

## Lights and portable power
A portable powerbank is a must. Don’t forget cords for GPS units, lights and your phone (we’ve all been there).
- If room and weight allows, bring more than one powerbank. Powerbanks that can charge a phone two to three times are solid.
- Opt for a front light you can actually navigate terrain with and not just be seen with, 400 lumens minimum. 
- A headlamp is a must-have for around camp. 
- A compact lantern to brighten up camp is nice, especially for groups.

Understanding how our outdoor gear is made and produced helps us make more informed, meaningful decisions – purchase power can be a real difference-maker. That’s why we’ve got a roundup of some of our favourite outdoor brands doing big things to help the environment. Indestructible duffle bags built with never-before-seen recycled materials, PFA-free puffy jackets and brands that help plant trees, this list is chock-full of innovative gear breaking new trail on our collective climate journey.  

## Patagonia  
Instead of “going public” [Patagonia](/products/brands/patagonia) is “going purpose” by making Earth their only shareholder [as of 2022](https://www.patagonia.ca/stories/a-letter-from-yvon-chouinard/story-127258.html). For over 50 years they’ve continued to push the innovation threshold when it comes to products that put the planet first. In the new iteration of their iconic Black Hole® collection including products like the fan-favourite [Patagonia Black Hole Duffle](/product/6027-482/black-hole-duffle?queryID=e39aab9dcfd7bc65cd09c18447981f9d&colour=Pimento+Red) and [Patagonia Black Hole 25L Daypack](/product/6025-513/black-hole-25-daypack?queryID=e39aab9dcfd7bc65cd09c18447981f9d&colour=Pufferfish+Gold), you’ll notice a matte finish instead of the recognizable sheen. Why? Because they’ve made the switch to a new recycled TPU finish that decreases their carbon emissions by up to 91% per kilogram compared to its counterpart — the shine is gone, but for good reason. This is the first use of recycled TPU in the industry and helps Patagonia work towards their goal of 100% recycled gear across their entire line – incredible! Black Hole® Matte Duffels

## Keen  

[Keen](/products/brands/keen) has taken big strides to eliminate all PFAs, or per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances, from their footwear since 2018 – a huge accomplishment. PFAs are a group of over 4,700 human-made substances that can be found in anything from non-stick cookware to cosmetics and firefighting foams (yikes). It’s no surprise that these “forever chemicals” can have adverse effects on our health and our environment and are super hard to remove because of how persistent they are. To help other brands make the change, Keen condensed their 10,000 hours of work into a [12-page Green Paper](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0607/3263/7348/files/KEEN_PFAS-FreeGreenPaper_ffb6f5b9-0fe9-4106-b717-504c2fe0ab65.pdf?v=1682116905) to help other brands eliminate these extremely toxic chemicals broadly used in outdoor footwear. 

## NEMO

## Kathmandu  

[Kathmandu](/products/brands/kathmandu) is also working on making their gear fully recyclable, so at the end of its life, it can become something new. The [Heli R Jacket](/search?q=heli%20r&brand=Kathmandu) incorporates recycled polyester, liner fabric, trims, details and zipper tape. Every Heli R jacket has its own unique QR code, you can scan this to see the full history of the jacket, from inception to creation and delivery. That’s some next level transparency in the name of environmental accountability. 

## EDELRID  

[EDELRID](/products/brands/edelrid)’s 3R collection – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – is a collection of equipment that meets the highest standards of responsible manufacturing. EDELRID’s 1R line consists of their ECO Dry ropes that are PFC and PFAS free as well as their bluesign certified harnesses, ropes and chalk bags.  The [Swiss bluesign® system](https://edelrid.com/int-en/vertical-freedom/edelrid-expertise/edelrid-technologies) certification is one of the most rigorous standards for textile production out there. ## tentree  

[tentree](/products/brands/tentree) plants trees for every item sold, and since they started at MEC we’ve planted over 2.8 million trees together – that’s huge! All tentree products are made using only sustainably sourced fabrics or recycled materials, and they’ve even started using organic [regenerative cotton](https://textileexchange.org/knowledge-center/reports/regenerative-agriculture-landscape-analysis/) in select items to help ecosystems stay healthy. This Earth Month tentree has launched a cool new project: [Tune into Nature](https://www.tentree.ca/pages/tune-into-nature), designed to help you unwind to the natural sounds of locations from around the globe.

Innovative gear that puts the planet first

There’s no better time than Earth Month to hold ourselves accountable on our climate targets. This April we’ll be checking in on our **Climate Action Plan** progress, teaming up with our incredible community of **outdoor partners** and orgs and hosting some cool **initiatives and events**. Get all the details below from our 2030 climate targets to when Tommy Caldwell will be visiting MEC Vancouver.   

## Pushing towards our climate action goals
Our full sustainability report drops in August, but we figured there’s no better time than Earth Month to give an update on where we’re at with our Climate Action Plan. While we love to share our good news, we’re not going to shy away from where we came up short and how we’re still aiming to improve. 

One of our big pushes for lower-carbon products is within our MEC Label lineup, where we’re upping the usage of recycled fabrics. It hasn’t been easy, but we’re not done yet.  

- MEC Label more than **doubled our use of recycled nylon** going from 8% in 2022 to 19% in 2023. Our goal for 2023 was 30%, so there’s still a ways to go on this journey. 

- We also increased our use of **recycled polyester**, taking it from 41% in 2022 to 44% in 2023, but our goal for 2023 was 50%. 

In both cases we did not meet the goals we laid out. While we’re encouraged by the progress we made, not meeting a goal always stings a little. But we’re picking ourselves up, dusting off our boots and setting our sights on our 2030 goals of **100% recycled nylon and 100% recycled polyester.** We know there will be some challenges on the journey ahead, but as the saying goes, if you’re reaching all your goals, you’re not setting them high enough.

Beyond our products, we’re making big moves to tackle our carbon emissions, and we’re leveraging some incredible partnerships to help maximize our impact.  

## UBC Sauder Centre for Climate and Business Solutions: SME Climate Clinic 
The UBC Sauder School of Business Centre for Climate and Business Solutions launched its first SME Climate Clinic in 2024, with MEC as the first Supply Chain Partner. This initiative helps us connect small brands with support and resources at UBC to start measuring and reducing their own emissions and MEC’s supply chain emissions, too. It also helps equip students with applied skills to drive sustainable change as future business leaders.

## City of Vancouver: False Creek Neighbourhood Energy Utility (NEU) 
One of the ways MEC Vancouver reduced the carbon emissions from our flagship store location is by connecting to the City of Vancouver’s False Creek Neighbourhood Energy Utility (NEU). The NEU system is super neat, it works by using waste thermal energy (a.k.a. heat) captured from sewage to provide space heating and hot water to buildings in Vancouver’s False Creek neighbourhood. This means our MEC Vancouver store uses renewable energy to heat the building, instead of only using conventional natural gas, and helps us operate our store in a lower-carbon way. The heat rejected from MEC Vancouver’s cooling system also helps to heat other buildings in the neighbourhood with renewable energy.

It’s all about coming together as a community to help protect our favourite planet where we get to hike, bike, camp and climb. We’ve been cooking up some sweet events and initiatives to help you and your crew support some incredible outdoor organizations.

Canada’s only charity dedicated to the protection of public land, freshwater and ocean with a strong national and regional presence across the country. ### Protect Our Winters Canada
At [POW Canada](/en/explore/protect-our-winters-canada) their mission is to turn outdoor enthusiasts into climate advocates. With 13 chapters nationwide, they team up with pro athletes, industry leaders and outdoors enthusiasts to bring real change and political reform to Canada’s fight against climate change. 

### Leave No Trace Canada
Promoting the responsible use of outdoor spaces is a cause that is near and dear to every outdoors enthusiast’s heart. That’s why MEC has been supporting [Leave No Trace Canada](/en/explore/leave-no-trace-canada) through education, research and partnerships since 2006. 

## In-store initiatives 

### Smartwool Second Cut Program  
**When:** April 1 – 30 at all MEC stores  
Only 12% of clothing materials end up getting recycled. It’s time to change that. The Smartwool Second Cut Project™ is back in Canada to **recycle your old socks** into new gear.    

Drop off unwanted socks at your local MEC store; look for the Smartwool Second Cut Project bins. Merino wool is preferred, but all socks are welcome as long as they’re clean: all brands, all colours, all materials, all conditions (single socks are good too). Smartwool will give these socks new life as a new Second Cut™ Project Hike Sock – nice!

### Sterling Rope Recycling Program  
**When:** Ongoing at all MEC stores (excluding HBC locations)  
Back for 2024, MEC will continue to offer a way for members to re-purpose their used climbing rope. Sterling Rope's dynamic rope recycling program gives old ropes new life. Some ropes get upcycled into things like dog leashes or bag handles. Others are melted or ground down into nylon pellets to be turned into carpet fibres, fleece, skateboards and dog toys.  

If you have **dynamic climbing rope** that’s dirty, damaged or ready to retire, this is your chance to get it out of your garage or gear closet and put it to work in a new way. Any brand is accepted, as long as it’s dynamic (not static) climbing rope. Coil or bind your rope (no flaked and loose ropes, please) and drop it off in the big Sterling Rope Monster Box at MEC stores. 

### Edelrid giveback  
**When:** April 1 — 30 in-store and online  
**Edelrid** and **MEC** have teamed up for Earth Month and will be donating $1 from each Edelrid product sold during the month of April to **Protect Our Winters Canada** (up to $2,000). 

## Sustainably minded products

Earth Month 2024

Hi, MEC community, I’m Jamillah – founder and CEO of [Hike MTL](https://www.hikemtl.com/). We’re a team of outdoor facilitators bringing BIPOC representation to outdoor spaces and one of MEC’s newest Outdoor Impact partners. Right now, we’re gearing up to host one of our favourite events of the year: BLK Winter Fest – a celebration of Black joy in the heart of winter and yes, it’s Black History Month!  

## About Hike MTL
Based in Montreal, Québec, Hike MTL is a social enterprise born from the need of representation in the outdoors. Our mission? Empower and destigmatize BIPOC communities by fostering a feeling of belonging through nature-based excursions, reducing economic and social barriers and promoting a healthy mental and physical lifestyle in the process.

## How it came to be
Our outdoor family adventures often surprise people, mainly because, let’s be honest, it's not the narrative people expect from the Black community. My passion for advocacy and social work began with my background in education and social work, but my journey into the outdoors started two decades ago, while working with youth facing mental health issues and trauma.  

Nature became our therapeutic playground. I vividly remember leading a group of boys on an unconventional hike, tippy- toeing off ledges and jumping tree stumps across streams. It felt like rediscovering the world as a child. That moment lingered. Fast forward to today, and despite being passionate about the outdoors, I've grappled with a sense of belonging. Being Black, outdoor spaces rarely showcase faces like mine. This lack of representation inspired me to create Hike MTL—an inclusive sanctuary that welcomes Black, Indigenous and people of color. It's a space where nature's therapeutic benefits are accessible to all. We guide our clients from feeling disconnected to experiencing a profound sense of belonging in nature. As someone who has always struggled with mental health and goes through waves of ups and downs, I have to admit, being in nature has always been a grounding tool for me. My favourite part about getting active outside is how I feel afterwards.

## BLK Winter Fest 2024
BLK Winter Fest is first and foremost, a VIBE. Pure winter celebration with different outdoors excursions throughout February, Black History Month. This is an inclusive opportunity for Black Canadians of all ages to engage in winter activities within a secure environment to foster a profound sense of belonging. We’re actively challenging ingrained stereotypes in the Black community by using the outdoors to promote a healthy way of living.

## What to expect

Vibes on vibes. A sense of community and belonging. Shifting your own narrative and perception of what outdoor adventurers look like. You can expect all of these at every Hike MTL event, but BLK Winter Fest is something special. From February 3– 24 we’re facilitating 5 winter excursions: cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, downhill skiing, skating and ice climbing. There will be an instructor teaching each activity, but all events are open to pros and newbies alike.  

## Seeing yourself in the outdoors

Because everyone deserves to feel connected with nature. The more BIPOC we see in the outdoor industry, the more stories we get to tell about our experiences, the more young people will connect to the outdoor world and enjoy nature’s therapeutic benefits. We need to know nature, to love nature and foster that will to protect nature. 

If you’re feeling a bit apprehensive about trying a new outdoor activity or looking to get outside but don’t see yourself occupying those spaces, start small. Join a local community, organization or business that focuses on outdoor experiences and values. I know I would have started way younger if I had those groups around growing up – it would have made a world of difference.

If you’ve been waiting for that right moment to snag your next outdoorsy gear, now’s the time. For one week in February, we’ll be hosting an exclusive in-person warehouse sale in Surrey, BC. 

From tents, packs and boots to cozy fleece, base layers and waterproof jackets and pants, we’re clearing out our warehouse to make room for some sweet items on the horizon. 

Whether you’re a camper, hiker, biker, kayaker or just a general lover of the outdoors, this warehouse sale will be the perfect chance to gear up with some of the best equipment at some truly unbeatable prices. But don't wait around — once these products are gone, they’re gone for good and all sales are final.  

The event will run over nine days, including two weekends starting **Saturday, February 3** to **Saturday, February 17** and takes place at the MEC warehouse at **13340 76th Avenue, Surrey, BC**. There will be plenty of parking as well as several bus routes in the area.

*There used to be an old saying about “no friends on a powder day” – but when you bring together a crew of pro-level athletes and filmmakers for a day of backcountry skiing in the Tantalus, then throw in blackcrows skis and Altus Mountain Guides – it’s pretty clear that friends are where it’s at, powder days included. – MEC*

The peaks of the Tantalus Range are easily visible when driving up to Whistler on the Sea-to-Sky Highway. The part of the range that runs through Squamish is located on the territory of the Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw people. They’re steep and glaciated and in winter they get hit with huge Pacific storms, so they’re pretty compelling for skiers, but they’re also guarded by the Squamish River. You can’t just drive to a parking lot and start skinning up. They’re close to home, but remote and still a little bit mystical.

What I love most about winter backcountry adventures, what makes them the most fun, is sharing the experience with people who love the mountains. When I look back to my best days skiing, they weren’t on my own, they were always with friends.

Most of the time when you’re in the backcountry, you’re one of a handful of people in the middle of nowhere. I love the stillness the winter brings, it’s something that seems hard to find in the world these days.

> “For me, to ski in the backcountry is to fall in love with skiing again. After eight years of competitive skiing on the Canadian National team, I saw myself losing a love for the sport.” 

Growing up as a competitive freestyle skier, I didn’t have many opportunities to get out into the backcountry. I’d be on the road for three weeks, home for a few days, then back on the road. I skied powder days at the resort as much as I could, but it wasn’t until I retired in 2020 that I started to get more into it.

My first real backcountry experience was after the Olympics in 2018 – for me, a totally hectic season – I took some time to get away with family and friends at Ymir Lodge in the Kootenays. I have these vivid memories of sunny spring skiing, but I also remember blisters and how much my hip flexors hurt (frame bindings and alpine boots). With some gear upgrades since then, every other trip has been significantly less painful.  

I’ve also continued to dial in my backcountry skills and completed my Avalanche Canada AST 2 (avalanche skills training). You can read more about [my experience here](https://www.mec.ca/en/article/ready-for-the-next-step-in-avalanche-safety-training).

I don’t necessarily do anything special to get ready for the ski season. I’m a pretty active person, so just keeping up with my fitness is all I try to do. The summer is easy with biking and hiking, but there’s about a month in the fall when it’s too wet and cold to bike, so going to the gym is my go-to.

If you’re going into the backcountry, I can’t express enough how important it is to get trained with an [Avalanche Canada Training course](https://avalanche.ca/training). Knowing how to use your gear, making good decisions as a group, being comfortable with the people you’re skiing/riding with, and trusting them to act if something were to happen are all part of the safety equation. Getting updates about the conditions and checking the [Avalanche Canada forecast](https://avalanche.ca/map) is totally essential too.

The west coast is the wet coast and I wouldn’t dare leave home without a Gore-Tex kit. The Couloir Jacket and Pants are a great combo to keep you dry and are great pieces to add layers underneath to suit your adventure and the temps outside.

We’re ending 2023 with a bang in the community events world of MEC! Our annual [MEC x POW Season Opener](https://www.mec.ca/en/explore/season-opener), in partnership with Arc’teryx, kicked off in October and it was our most epic tour yet. There were amazing **prizes, films** to get stoked on the season ahead, **thought-provoking conversations** with our **pro-athlete panels** and so much more. To spread the love this season, we added a few extra stops to the tour (new for 2023) - shout out to our climate advocates in Kelowna, Edmonton, Kitchener, Ottawa and Quebec City!  

With nine events and sold-out shows across the country, over 1,200 passionate outdoor enthusiasts joined us in celebrating winter. Together, we raised a **record breaking $40,000 for Protect Our Winters Canada** in the fight against climate change.

MEC x POW: Season Opener

We kicked things off at our flagship store in Vancouver. The crowd was buzzing with energy, a lot of laughs and some sweet prizing. We had a sold-out event with over 300 people filling the store from top to bottom.  

We were lucky to have another lineup of amazing athletes that are champions in the movement against climate change. In Vancouver, we welcomed ski (and snowboard) legends [Mike Douglas](https://www.instagram.com/mikedski/), [Anna Segal](https://www.instagram.com/anna_segal), [Tobin Seagal](https://www.instagram.com/tobinseagel) and [Marie-France Roy](https://www.instagram.com/mariefranceroy). Our panelists drove home the message that there is a lot of power in shifting your mindset and even the smallest change can be impactful.   

We also talked hot tips for the winter season with our pros, including advice for those with cold or sweaty feet!

Our friends from Arc’teryx pulled out all the stops, transporting our attendees into virtual backcountry huts with their VR experience. The ReBird team was a special addition to this year’s events, joining us to share their circularity journey through their ReCARE, ReGEAR and ReCUT programs. We talked tips and tricks on how to preserve and extend the life cycle of their gear, through maintenance and repairs, with the goal of keeping it out of landfills.

A winter celebration wouldn’t be complete without ski films to get us excited about the season ahead. We were stoked to showcase two films that should definitely be on your must-watch list! First up we had [Unlikely Duo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwWxR57MMfI&feature=youtu.be), presented by Arc’teryx, that explores the adventures and partnership of world-class competitive skiers, Tom Peiffer and Eric Carter.

We were in for a treat as one of our panelists, pro skier and POW Athlete, Anna Segal, was in Vancouver to present her film.  Directed by Jeff Thomas, [23.4 Degrees](https://vimeo.com/869394960) follows a skier across the valleys, forests and mountain summits of BC as she explores her affinity with seasonal change and the role it plays in connecting our modern lifestyle to the natural world.

With all the energy from Montreal keeping us going, we made our third stop in Toronto. The event kicked off with a special message from POW Athlete and Eco-explorer [Mario Rigby](https://www.instagram.com/mariorigby) to set the stage for conversations to unfold that evening. We were joined by POW Canada’s Executive Director Ali Wines and two incredible panelists, MEC Ambassador and POW Athlete [Yuki Tsubota](https://www.instagram.com/yuki_tsubota) and POW Canada chapter lead [Dave Spies](https://www.instagram.com/davemspies).  

We were able to get a different perspective from Dave Spies, whose work focuses on environmental law and public lands defense. Yuki shared her firsthand experiences on the mountain and how the landscape has become very unpredictable, making it more challenging for folks to enjoy the backcountry.

We continued our chase for winter, packed up our parkas and headed to Calgary. We didn’t think that anything could top the Vancouver event (sorry, I’m a born and raised Vancouverite and I love my city!) but Calgary brought the energy and level of stoke up to ten. Attendees queued down the block with skis and snowboards in-hand for the ski-wax-by-donation, drinks flowed from local breweries and the tunes were pumping from our [DJ Sonidef.](https://www.instagram.com/djsonidef)
