# Hiking Pants Materials Guideline:

When choosing the best hiking pants, it's important to consider the materials they're made from. Here's a guideline to help you better understand the advantages of different materials:

- **Nylon:** Provides durability and abrasion resistance for rugged terrain.
- **Polyester:** Offers moisture-wicking properties and quick-drying capabilities, suitable for various weather conditions.
- **Spandex:** Adds stretch and flexibility, allowing for unrestricted movement on the trail.
- **Cotton:** While comfortable, cotton tends to retain moisture and is not a great choice for hiking.
- **DWR Finish:** DWR stands for "Durable water repellent." It’s a treatment applied to fabrics to make them water-resistant, causing water to bead up and roll off the surface. Great for protection against light rain or moisture.
- **Gore-Tex:** Known for its waterproof and breathable properties, ideal for hiking in rainy or snowy conditions.
- **G-1000 ®:** Developed by Fjallraven, G-1000 ® is a durable blend of 65% polyester and 35% cotton, often treated with Greenland Wax for enhanced weather resistance, suitable for rugged exploration and outdoor activities.

A solid [bikepacking checklist](/en/explore/bikepacking-checklist) is a fantastic start for your off-road missions. But knowing exactly what to choose is another story. From bike bags to GPS units, here are features and products we recommend when building a bikepacking setup that’s lightweight, packable and reliable.

## Bike bags and racks 
Essential for bikepacking (obviously). Whether you opt for saddle packs or a rack setup, some tips on what to look for: 

### Saddle packs
Saddle packs are by far one of the most popular bikepacking bag options. They’re easy to install and don’t require additional mounting points or racks. Features you’ll likely want: 
- Waterproofing is a must (rainy days and muddy tires mean your saddle pack will get wet).
- Roll closure systems can accommodate tons of gear and you can roll them up tight when less stuffed. 
- Seat post and seat rail straps are essential. Cinch as solidly as possible to prevent tail wag.
- Many saddle packs include elastic cords or daisy chains. Elastic cords are great for stuffing a jacket into quickly, while daisy chains are good for clipping on tricky-to-pack things like camp mugs.
- Internal stiffeners provide extra rigidity to the bag and prevent it from sagging under load.

### Seat pack + rear rack combos 
For extra security and hauling lots of cargo on big trips, a seat post/bag combo does wonders. Another option is a “floating” rack design that attaches to your bike’s seat stays, which provides excellent stability. ### Handlebar bags 
Tied with seat packs as the bag you’re most likely to see on a bikepacking rig. You can get handlebar bags for both drop- and straight-style bars.
- For smaller loads, a simple strap that attaches to handlebars and the headtube works.
- Make sure your bar bag is waterproof (keep those snacks dry).
- Zippered or flap closures do the trick for tidy loads. For hauling more, a bigger bag with a roll-closure is best.
- The front of your bike is stable, so it can handle cargo if you opt for a rack or cradle system. 
- With rack or cradle systems, opt for a heavy-duty drybag with roll closure system.

### Frame packs
Attached directly to your bike frame, a frame pack is designed to fit in the triangle formed by the top tube, seat tube and down tube of your bike. 
- The longer shape allows for items such as pumps or tent poles to be strapped to or stored with ease.
- Available as a full frame pack or a half frame pack, choose a size that best fits your bike and your capacity needs 
- Maintains the bike's low center of gravity, making it the ideal place to pack heavier items.

## Lightweight tents
While you can go hyper-light with a bivy or hammock, the majority of us will opt for a light backpacking tent. Some things to consider:

- One- or two-person tents that pack small and are used by backpackers work well.
- A three-season tent is recommended.
- Ensure the tent includes a waterproof fly with fully taped seams.
- Look for a tent roughly in the 2kg range. Skip anything well above the 3 or 4kg mark.
- Any good backpacking tent will include a compact stuff sack. However, it’s possible to pack a tent even tighter. If need be, strap your tent poles to your saddle bag, or wrap them and secure to your top tube. You may be able to save a good chunk of space.

## Sleeping bags and pads 
Ideally, you want a sleeping bag that’s warm enough for spring, summer and fall camping, but not so heavy it weighs you down. A sleeping pad is a must (just don’t opt for a mega-sized car camping one).

- A nice, light sleeping bag is usually rated around 0°C to -2°C.
- Target weight for a lightweight sleeping bag is around 900–1100 grams.
- Make sure your bag has a durable water repellent (DWR) treatment.
- Sleeping pads with insulation are ideal, but you may be able to go lighter if hot weather is likely.
- A light sleeping pad should pack roughly to the size of a Nalgene bottle.

## Camp kitchen gear 
If you’re gonna bike, you gotta eat. Pack light, but be sure to bring essentials for good camp eating. 
- When it comes to stoves, single burner setups are best. They’re light, pack small and reliable. 
- If you pack a pot, pack as much of your cook setup into it (stove included, if room allows). 
- Some companies offer a “everything in a pot” cookware setup including collapsible bowls and mugs.

- Make sure you have a plan for keeping bears and critters out of your food.

## Lights and portable power
A portable powerbank is a must. Don’t forget cords for GPS units, lights and your phone (we’ve all been there).
- If room and weight allows, bring more than one powerbank. Powerbanks that can charge a phone two to three times are solid.
- Opt for a front light you can actually navigate terrain with and not just be seen with, 400 lumens minimum. 
- A headlamp is a must-have for around camp. 
- A compact lantern to brighten up camp is nice, especially for groups.

Empowering more people to get outside is one of our favourite things. That’s why we’re super excited to launch technical plus size hiking gear from MEC Label – because awesome outdoor adventures start with finding your right fit. While we haven’t been able to make all the gear we have in mind (idea overload!), we’re psyched that this collection marks the start of our latest MEC Label journey.

As a retailer, MEC has carried plus sizes from brands like Girlfriend Collective, Alder Apparel, Gregory and Outdoor Research for years. But when it comes to plus size gear designed by our in-house MEC Label team, we totally recognize that we’re late to the party. So this is long overdue, but we’re stoked to finally be able to offer technical plus size hiking gear by our very own MEC Label.


One thing we’re especially pumped about? The collection is created to be a system. We’ve designed base layers, insulated jackets, rain shells, hiking pants and more to work together for rain, wind, snow and demanding conditions. It’s thoughtful, it’s technical and it’s just part of our continued commitment to supporting diversity in the outdoors.

It’s also just the beginning. Think of this launch as our arrival to the trailhead: we’ve double-knotted our laces and plotted our route, but we have a long way to go (and a lot more ideas).

## What is plus sizing?

There are a lot of terms floating around out there: plus sizes, extended sizes, straight sizes – so let’s break it down a bit. “Plus sizing” means we don’t just take “straight sizes” (a.k.a. small, medium, large) and make them bigger. Plus sizes consider fuller hip to waist ratios, so you don’t end up with shells that squeeze the shoulders or rain pants that gape at the hips.

**Fun fact:** the [Smash + Tess x MEC collab](/en/explore/smash-tess-mec-collab) on the Fresh Air Fleece Jumpsuits in 2022 was a pivotal learning point for our design team when it came to working with measurements and fit for women’s plus size clothing.

## Community-led design 
All this work: designing, testing, fitting, gathering feedback, re-designing and re-testing, took about two years from initial design conception to seeing gear land in stores and on mec.ca. 

In the development process, we leaned on the expertise of our community to pinpoint the problem areas in plus size gear on the market right now. Our in-house design team collaborated with other outdoor brands and plus size voices in the outdoor industry to identify challenges people face, from in-store shopping to summit.

The key takeaway was simple: women want technical performance gear without compromising on comfort and colour. 

## More technical options. More people outside.
We listened to what our community was looking for: a plus size performance hiking gear collection with base layers, insulation, shells and pants that are versatile, but work together. We wanted to give more people more technical options, which meant layers you can mix and match, pull on and peel off as needed. Adventuring outdoors in gear that forces you to choose between staying dry and staying warm is not only uncomfortable but can be seriously unsafe in the wrong conditions. The   leggings you wear running errands and summer car camping just aren’t going to cut it when you’re pushing pace up Mount Robson.

Another theme we heard? Not enough colour options. Outdoor brands with great technical gear mainly carried plus sizes in neutral colours like black, greys and navy, which not only can be unsafe as they’re hard to spot in the dark, but also begged the question: what good is great performance gear if you don’t love wearing it? So we took the colours we have for other sizes, and continued them in this collection, too.

When you’re investing in gear, you want to make sure it’s something you’ll love year after year. That’s why we’re carrying MEC plus size hiking products in select stores so you can try them on for fit and comfort before your next multi-day or alpine ascent. “Through the fitting process we started to whittle out products that weren’t right. We wanted to make sure the gear we launched with fit the best, was the most comfortable, retained the most warmth and kept [testers] the driest,” says Emily, Category Manager of MEC Label.

## What’s next for plus size MEC Label?
The new MEC Label plus size hiking gear collection is our first step on a much longer journey. It’s been awesome hearing such incredible feedback from our community and we’re looking forward to releasing more MEC favourites in plus sizes in the future.

The MEC Toaster Suit first showed up in our catalogue in 1992 – yep, more than 30 years ago. Ever since then, the Toaster Suit has been a huge hit with parents and kiddos alike. So much so, that it almost always sells out (hint: that’s why we start talking about it in August).

One of our all-time favourite designs, this year’s version is easily our best yet. Here’s why parents have loved it for more than three decades, and why it’s good to get your hands on one before the mercury drops.

## They’re hand-me-down ready
We’ve heard it countless times since 1992 — Toaster Suits are legendary for their hand-me-down durability. Case in point: one MEC staffer told us she’s bought three Toaster Suits over the years for her son, and they held together so well that she was able to hand them down to her daughter… and then along to her nephew.

Over the years, we’ve made it even more durable. Redesigned and updated based on member feedback, Toaster Suits are waterproof and tougher than ever. Toast on!

With 300g of MEC Hyperloft insulation, the Toaster Suit just might be the coziest kids’ snowsuit out there. And it's waterproof-breathable too. ## There are clever details
Remember when powdery snow or slush would creep up your pantleg as a kid? If you don’t, your kiddo will remind you. To prevent dreaded slush and powder leaks, the Toaster features a foot cuff liner. 

And because we want every Toaster Suit to keep them warm season after season, we included a grow hem. The grow hem lets you undo a line of stitching at the ankle, allowing for a longer pant leg when the time comes. Neat, right?

If you like to get outside and stay warm, you’re probably familiar with down insulation. It might be in your favourite winter coat, your sleeping bag, or even in the duvet on your bed. It’s a great insulator for outdoor activities since it’s lightweight, compresses small, and keeps you toasty.  

Which is why we’re excited to announce a totally new option for MEC Label products: recycled down. It’s the first time ever we’ve been able to do this – and you can see it in action in the Classic Bush Pilot Down Sweater, part of the limited-edition [MEC Classics Collection](/en/p/mec-classics-collection).

## Why recycled down?  

When our Vancouver-based MEC Label team started to design the Classics Collection, it felt like the perfect chance to try something new with materials. Recycled content is a goal for the materials we use, and recycled polyester and nylon is something we’ve been doing for years. So this time, we set our sights on a whole different material: recycled down. 

Down has a long lifespan. As a material, it’s well-suited to use over and over again. Even better, recycled down helps us address the growing issue of textile waste. The recycled down in the Bush Pilot Down Sweater comes from post-consumer products (like bedding or pillows) that would otherwise have gone to the landfill, which means we’re helping to keep perfectly good materials out of the waste stream.

## Where does the down come from? 

We work with ALLIED Feather + Down for our RENU:700 Performance Recycled Down. Each season, they collect about 500,000 pillows and comforters that are otherwise destined for the landfill. They grade the items by quality and colour, then sort it into piles.

Over 37kg of textile waste per person ends up in landfills each year ([source](https://earth.org/statistics-about-fast-fashion-waste/#:~:text=In%20America%20alone%2C%20an%20estimated,2%2C150%20pieces%20per%20second%20countrywide.)) – about the same weight as 544 Clif bars. Recycled down is one way to reduce this waste. 

Next up: an intense washing process to sterilize the down, using [bluesign®-approved](/en/article/what-the-heck-is-bluesign) washing methods. Finally, there’s one last round of sorting to remove any broken feathers or fibres. One thing that’s especially nice about this whole process is acts as a bit of natural selection with the down clusters – the ones that remain at the end are very strong and give great loft per cluster. Recycled down retains its performance, so as long as you take care of your gear, you won’t even notice a difference.

## What’s next for recycled down?  

One of the great parts of trying recycled down in the Classics Collection is that we can experiment in a limited-edition run. We get to dabble in new ideas and materials in smaller quantities to make sure members love it. 

So far, recycled down has been a hit with our design team. We’re excited to introduce this material into another product coming up; keep your eye out this fall for the MEC Label Bromont Ski Jacket with recycled down.

## Recycled down vs RDS-certified down 

Some of you may be asking how recycled down stacks up against [RDS-certified down](/en/explore/animal-welfare) (Responsible Down Standard). We asked ourselves this question too, as both kinds of down have more positive impacts:   

- RDS-certified down ensures that ducks and geese are raised humanely, with no live plucking or force feeding.  

- Recycled down ensures waste does not pollute our environment and helps in our transition to a more circular economy.  

Comparing RDS-certified down to recycled down is like comparing apples to oranges: both are great options and it’s hard to definitively say which is better. Something we’re looking forward to? Down suppliers are working on ways to verify that recycled down is also RDS-certified, which would be the best of the best when it comes to down.  

One thing we can say for certain, though, is that all down used in MEC Label gear will be either 100% recycled down or (for virgin down) 100% RDS-certified.
