Outdoor festival camping checklist

If you had asked me to go camping a few years ago, I would have found the first blanket to hide under. Back then, it just seemed like so much effort, and I wasn’t prepared to leave behind my cozy bed for the forest floor and a sleeping bag just yet.

But after my first time camping, I realized that your trip and your campsite are what you make of them. Adding comforts and character to your campsite can help your experience go from “roughing it” in the forest to a weekend more comfy and photo-worthy than one spent in the city. Even on a short getaway with friends, nothing beats getting a little indulgent and sprucing up your campsite, especially if you’re rolling there with a vehicle or are just a short walk to your site. Here are some tricks I’ve learned along the way that can bring a little more luxury to your next camping trip.

### Get fancy with meal planning


It’s a myth that camping means denying yourself the comforts or luxuries of home. With room in your trunk and some solid camping cookware, you can almost recreate a mini version of your very own kitchen, only outdoors.

Who’s to say you can’t cook a 3-course meal in the woods? There are lots of double burner stoves to choose from that are still light and compact, like the [GSI Pinnacle Pro 2 Burner Stove](/en/product/6005-634/pinnacle-pro-2-burner-stove?colour=NO_COLOUR), for instance. I like to poach marinated chicken in boiling water (all you need is a pot) until it’s shreddable and treat my campmates to chicken and pineapple tacos by the campfire. You can also step things up by charring corn on the campstove and adding it to the tacos or a cold salad.

### Create the ultimate hangout spot


Beyond the basic tarp and tent combo, you can add a little flair to your campsite to make it feel more luxurious.

Some [cozy bedding](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/sleeping-bags-and-pillows/c/1405) goes a very long way. When you’re car camping, there’s plenty more room in the trunk than there would be in a backpack, so why not take advantage? Bringing throw blankets and pillows can help you turn your tent set-up from comfortable to a full-on adult fort in the woods. Consider creating a tent “patio” with a tarp, blankets and some [deluxe camping chairs](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/camp-furniture/chairs/c/1434) to enjoy camp coffee and breakfast in the sunlight.

You can also make use of the space around you, including the trees in the area. For an afternoon lying horizontal under the trees, it’s worth the 5-minute set-up.

### Add mood lighting


Consider swapping out headlamps to create some mood lighting. Lanterns are an easy and quick way to give your campsite some ambiance. Camp in comfort: ways to improve your next escape

Building up a camping gear collection can be an exciting step to spending more time outside and planning trips. For some people, scoping out new gear inventions online or wandering down store aisles while thinking about upcoming trips can be almost as fun as the excursions themselves. But with so much gear to choose from, it can be hard to know where to invest and where to count your pennies – especially if you’re stocking up all at once.

To help you make some decisions, check out our picks for splurge-worthy gear, and some areas where you can safely save a few bucks if you’re building up your camp equipment on a budget.

## Where to splurge
#### Sleeping bag
Your [sleeping bag](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/sleeping-bags-and-pillows/sleeping-bags/c/1410) (along with your tent) is easily the most important piece of gear you’ll purchase – especially if you plan on 3- or 4-season camping. Spend some time researching bags so you can make an informed decision based on your needs ([synthetic or down? mummy or barrel?](/en/explore/choose-your-sleeping-bag)) and make sure your bag is properly rated for the temperatures you’ll be sleeping in. ### 2. Wearable tech is sticking around


Wearable technology first made a big splash a few years ago. In 2017, it’s still proving to be one of the go-to tactics to stay motivated and measure your output and performance. Most of us are familiar with run watches and heart rate monitors from [Suunto](/en/products/electronics/watches/c/1153?filters%5Bbrand%5D%5B0%5D=suunto), [Polar](/en/products/electronics/watches/c/1153?filters%5Bbrand%5D%5B0%5D=polar) and [Garmin](/en/products/electronics/watches/c/1153?filters%5Bbrand%5D%5B0%5D=garmin) (their [Forerunner](/en/product/6022-794/forerunner-955) watch has been a hit in the run world for more than a decade), but we don’t all use them to our advantage. ##### All the bells and whistles

It tracks steps, sleep patterns and heart rate, and has an integrated antenna for outstanding signal reception from satellites.

### 3. Run crews, groups and clubs are everywhere


Sure, following running athletes on Instagram is great for initial motivation. But a running meet-up or crew where you run with people in real life gives you that extra kick to head out after a long day at work or drag yourself out of bed in the morning. Luckily, running crews are popping up in cities across Canada and each one has its individual flavour. There are groups that head out from buzzing Queen Street West in Toronto (Parkdale Road Runners), ones that run to post-run craft beer (like RunTOBeer), some that mix road runs with singletrack trails in BC (Fraser Street Run Club) and lots more.

### 4. More gear for more styles
As more people get into running, the demand for diverse and individualized styles and features has increased. Today’s running brands are offering up gear and clothes to suit everyone. Here are a few things that caught our attention for 2017:

#### Running caps

#### Squishy bottles


[Soft water bottles](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/kitchen-and-hydration/water-bottles-and-water-treatment/water-bottles/collapsible-bottles/c/1534?filters%5Bcustom_fields.ideal%20for%5D%5B0%5D=running&filters%5Bcustom_fields.ideal%20for%5D%5B1%5D=fitness%20and%20training): there when you need them, collapse down when you don’t. They’re awesome for races since you can fill them up at aid stations, and they fit into streamlined hydration vests. More and more races are going paper-cup free, so these are nice minimalist way to BYOWB (water bottle).

Since most of us are digitally connected, it makes sense to look to our phones to help us improve and be inspired – which is where running apps come in. One app to keep an eye out for later this year is [EverybodyRun](https://cieleathletics.com/everybodyrun/) by Ciele (the same brand that makes those nifty caps). It aims to connect runners with other runners, running services and run shops. Official launch is later in 2017.

Running trends to keep up with in 2017

A tent is your home away from home. You want it to be a dry, comfy shelter – and you don’t want to have to replace it every year. Whether you need a compact 1- or 2-person option, a tent for festival camping, or a mega-roomy family tent that fits everyone (plus the dog), here are some tips on what to look for:

### 1. Tested for real life

The video above is just one example, and it shows the [MEC TGV Tent](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/tents-tarps-and-bivies/tents/c/1449?text=tgv&org_text=tgv) being tested a special wind lab (we learned a lot about the best guyline placement with this test). We also have our own materials lab for testing, and send tents out into the wild for [field testing](/en/explore/materials-and-technology) to make sure they’ll stand up to the conditions they’re designed for. Make sure the tent you choose is up for whatever you expect nature to be throwing your way.

A good sealed seam can withstand a downpour and won’t be compromised by the hot sun. MEC tent seams are sealed using techniques similar to the ones used in our waterproof GORE-TEX jackets. Another thing to look for is a full-coverage fly that comes down to the ground (cheaper tents don’t typically have this). Combined, these features will keep wind-blown rain off your tent from all sides to keep water out, with no extra tarps required.

### 3. Ventilation


Make sure there’s space between the fly and the canopy. You want air to be able to circulate through with venting in the right places, otherwise condensation from your breath will settle on the tent walls overnight as you’re sleeping.

### 4. Durable waterproof floor 
Rainy days won’t ruin your camping experience, but wet gear will. That’s why all MEC tents have DriBase™ floors, which uses exceptionally durable waterproof fabric rated to 5000mm of waterproof protection throughout the reasonable lifetime of the tent. It reduces the need for a footprint (which is why MEC tents don’t include a footprint) and also cuts down on fabric consumption and waste. 

With that said, a footprint is nice add-on when camping on sharp, abrasive surfaces (such as gravel), when bare feet or paws will be inside the tent, or for an ultralight tent fly and footprint set-up.



### 5. Heavy-duty zippers
Think about how many times you zip and unzip the front zipper – it’s like your front door when you’re camping. The front zipper takes a lot of abuse and can often be the first part of a tent to fail. Look for heavy-duty zippers (MEC uses the industry leader YKK) and test them out to make sure they don’t stick or snag.

### 6. Aluminum poles


Aluminum is both lightweight and sturdy, which makes it an excellent material for tent poles. Fibreglass poles can break, and steel is heavy and bends without bouncing back into shape.

### 7. Serious pegs
Quality tent pegs won’t break or bend when you hammer them into rocky ground (or when you hammer them with a rock into rocky ground). When you can get the pegs set solidly in whatever surface you’re camping on, it means your tent will stay put, and it will do its job, which is keeping you comfy and dry.

### 8. Easy to set up
Look for tents that can be assembled by one person – it’s especially helpful if you’re family camping, because one parent can set up while the other one keeps an eye on the kids. MEC tents use instructions that are image-based, simple, and they’re printed right on the carry bag, so you won’t lose them.

### Bonus: Extra features or add-ons


They’re not always must-haves, but extra features and [tent add-ons](/en/products/gear/camping-and-hiking-gear/tents-and-shelters/gear-lofts-and-tent-add-ons/c/1438) can make a difference. Things to look for include big vestibules (sometimes sold separately) or awnings that give you a place to hang out if it’s sunny or rainy. Inner pockets are helpful to stash your headlamp and other small items, and gear lofts act like mini attics to store items out of the way. Divider curtains, multiple doors and built-in lighting can also make your tent feel like a well-designed outdoor home.

### What tent should you buy?
The features above are a solid starting point when you’re tent shopping, but the best tent for you depends on how you plan to use it. Things to look for in a quality tent

Many people think winter camping is something impossible or extreme. But in reality, as long as you have the right gear and plan ahead, it can be a fun way to get your friends together outside in the off-season.

The biggest thing about winter camping is to be prepared. If you’re a beginner winter camper, choose a location that’s easy to get to and plan a single night trip, so you can fine-tune your systems and have an easy out in case of anything unexpected.

## What to pack


1. Start with a gear list – you don’t want to forget anything, especially if it’s something you need to keep warm. Take a look at our [backpacking checklist](/en/explore/backpacking-checklist) and [ski touring checklist](/en/explore/ski-touring-checklist) for ideas on what to bring.

2. Pack plenty of warm layers, including clean, dry layers to sleep in. Are you someone who’s always cold? Read more tips on [staying warm and sleeping warm](/en/explore/staying-warm-and-sleeping-warm).

3. Avoid clothes made of cotton and go for synthetic or merino wool [base layers](/en/products/clothing/base-layers-and-underwear/c/1053) instead. [Wool is an excellent material](/en/explore/wool-garments-for-the-outdoors) that keeps you warm and traps heat, which makes it a great choice for damp conditions.

4. Wear [waterproof boots](/en/products/footwear/boots/c/1189?filters%5Bcustom_fields.features%5D%5B0%5D=waterproof) that have soles with solid traction for snowy trails.

5. [Hand and toe warmers](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/health-and-safety/emergency-and-survival-gear/hand-and-toe-warmers/c/1212?filters%5Bbrand%5D%5B0%5D=grabber) are excellent ways to keep fingers and feet warm.

## Making a fire
6. If you plan to make a fire, come prepared with [fire starters](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/kitchen-and-hydration/stoves-fuel-and-fire/fire-starters-matches-and-lighters/c/1282), wood, paper and an extra lighter.

7. Make sure to bring enough wood – don’t underestimate how cold it can get during the winter! Since winter is the off-season at many campgrounds, services can be limited in some parks so there may not be wood for sale. Some parks sell wood at their visitor centres since it’s forbidden to gather wood in most parks.

8. If your campsite is far away from the parking area or trailhead, bring a sled to drag in your wood and supplies.

9. Dig a hole in the snow to help keep your fire from collapsing when the snow melts. Using a fire pan is a good alternative (see [Leave No Trace](http://www.leavenotrace.ca/principle-minimize-campfire-impacts) for info).

## Sleeping warm
10. Use a [foam pad](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/sleeping-pads/c/1416?filters%5Bcustom_fields.type%5D%5B0%5D=foam%20pad) under your [inflatable sleeping pad](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/sleeping-pads/c/1416?filters%5Bcustom_fields.type%5D%5B0%5D=inflatable%20pad) for added warmth. 11. Depending on the expected temperatures, bring a [sleeping bag](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/sleeping-bags-and-pillows/sleeping-bags/c/1410?filters%5Bcustom_fields.gs_sleepingbagtemperature%5D%5B0%5D=winter%20(-40%C2%B0c%20to%20-15%C2%B0c)) rated for winter camping (-15°C to -40°C). 12. Use a [sleeping bag liner](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/sleeping-bags-and-pillows/sleeping-bag-liners/c/1406) in your sleeping bag for a bit of extra warmth.

13. Create your own hot water bottle:





16. Condensation and snow can make your tent and sleeping bag damp. When you get home from your trip, make sure to dry out all your gear very well before you pack it up. This prevents mildew and is [good tent care](/en/explore/how-to-care-for-your-tent).

## Meal time


13. Bring extra fuel, since you’ll likely be melting snow for water. [White gas stoves](/en/product/5020-289/946ml-unit-%2832fl-oz%29-Stove-Fuel) work well in freezing cold temperatures.

14. Make sure you bring meals that are quick and easy to prepare (single pot options or just add hot water [freeze-dried meals](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/kitchen-and-hydration/food-and-drink/c/1175?filters%5Bcustom_fields.ideal%20for%5D%5B0%5D=winter%20and%20expedition%20camping) are good ideas). Cooking and cleaning up in mitts can be challenging!

## Setting up your campsite


15. Bring a [shovel](/en/products/snow/avalanche-safety-gear/avalanche-shovels-saws/c/2082) to clear the snow for your tent site. Dig an area in the snow for your tent to help protect you from the wind. Packing down snow under your tent gives you an even sleeping surface, and you won’t sink down into the snow at night.

16. Make sure you give yourself enough time to organize your campsite, since you’ll be doing some snow shoveling. Start preparing your site at least an hour and a half before sunset so that you won’t be caught in the dark.

17. Use a [four-season tent](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/camping-tents-tarps-and-bivies/tents/winter-and-expedition-tents/c/9874).

18. Bring a [tarp](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/camping-tents-tarps-and-bivies/tarps-and-light-shelters/c/1441) to cover anything that will remain outside at night in case it snows.

19. When you [select your tent site](/en/explore/choosing-a-tent-site), make sure you’re not under any tree branches heavy with snow.

## Extra tips


23. Don’t forget [lighting](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/headlamps-and-lighting/c/1296) (lanterns, headlamps and candles are a must) and extra [batteries](/en/products/electronics/batteries/c/1113).

24. If you want to keep your backpack light, bring [water treatment](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/kitchen-and-hydration/water-bottles-and-water-treatment/water-filters-treatment-and-tablets/water-treatments-and-tablets/c/1243) and melt snow instead of packing in water.

25. All electronic equipment loses power faster in the cold. Try portable power packs like the easily transportable [Goal Zero](/en/products/electronics/chargers-and-adapters/c/1132?filters%5Bbrand%5D%5B0%5D=goal%20zero). They work great!

26. Bring [camp chairs](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/camp-furniture/chairs/c/1434), blankets or your closed-foam pad so that you don’t have to sit directly on the snow. It’s the best way to avoid freezing your buns.

Winter camping tips: 26 things beginners should know

As more and more people take up running each year, running when it’s cold and snowy out is also gaining in popularity. One of the advantages of running in winter is that the snow creates an uneven running surface that gives your stabilizing muscles an extra workout, while also cushioning every step. The challenges? Cold temps and slippery surfaces that can increase your risk of falling.

Here’s a quick look at some gear to consider for winter running to help you stay safe and enjoy your run in the snow. When you do head out, make sure to [layer up](/en/explore/clothing-layers) properly, too.

### Wear grippy running shoes




When you’re running in winter, traction is key. Your best ally to keep you from falling is what’s on your feet. Look for trail running shoes with lugs on the soles for solid traction (the number and size of the lugs vary from one brand of shoe to the next). Also look for waterproof shoes (or at least water-resistant) made with GORE-TEX® or similar type membrane to help keep your feet comfortable. When the snow clears, you can use your trail running shoes to explore park paths, or maybe even one of the many trail running races across Canada.



If you already own running shoes but they have bad traction, pair them with some traction devices (sometimes called microspikes or by the brand name [Yaktrax](/en/brand/yaktrax/products/footwear/traction-devices/c/1204)). This is a great option if you like your running shoes and don’t want to buy a new, grippier pair. There are many different options for traction devices: some are very versatile and can be used on many types of terrain, from forest trails to icy city sidewalks. If you plan to run only on trails, look for very sharp, pointy traction spikes that will bite into the packed snow and frozen ground.



If you plan to run mostly in forests or on snow-covered trails, you can opt for running snowshoes. These are typically lighter and narrower than regular snowshoes. They’re also equipped with a pivot that lets your feet to move more freely for a comfortable stride. When you’re using these snowshoes, we recommend that you wear waterproof trail running shoes or running shoes. If you don’t have any waterproof shoes, look into some [GORE-TEX socks](/en/product/4000-338/Stretch-GORE-TEX-Oversocks) to wear over thin socks. That way, your feet will stay dry even if your shoes don’t.



If running is part of your daily or weekly routine all year-round, you may want to pick up a running backpack. It’s a smart way to carry some extra layers, water and some snacks (and is also a place to stash layers as you warm up). The most important thing when you choose a running backpack is to make sure that it bounces around as little as possible. Look for one that’s not too big (5L is a good place to start) and fits the shape of your back well. Try out several backpacks in store so you find the right one for you.

From wheel sizes to geometry to travel set-ups, there’s a lot to keep track of. ##### First off, what’s this JS Tuned suspension business?
Take a quick glance at any Intense specs, and you’ll hear a lot of talk about JS Tuned suspension set-ups. First off, the “JS” stands for Jeff Steber – the founder of Intense. Let’s lay it out there: every company has their own “super high-tech space-age advanced” suspension system that promises the best performance ever. Thing is, JS Tuned suspension *is* kind of a big deal.

Long story short(ish): JS Tuned suspension is essentially a customized variant of the now-famous Virtual Pivot Point (VPP) system.

##### Wait, isn’t that used by some other mountain bike company whose name I can’t remember?
Yes. Along with Intense, a very select list of brands have the patent for this tech. It’s a sophisticated system that can’t be built in huge numbers, so big bike companies don’t have the manufacturing resources to create them – which makes it a pretty exclusive piece of tech.

Every bike company using the system engineers it a bit differently. JS Tuned suspension is Intense’s custom take on it, which means each suspension set-up is specced *specifically* for each bike in the range based on wheel size, intended use, drive train, geometry and a ton of other stuff.



##### So how does JS Tuned suspension work?
The basics: it’s a dual-link suspension system. Unlike single pivot set-ups, it doesn’t produce an arc axle path; when riding gnarly trails, an arc axle path can make it feel like the bike’s bucking you off like you’re on a cheap-beer-fuelled mechanical bull ride.

Not-so with JS Tuned suspension set-ups. Because of the lower link tucked near the bottom bracket (Intense calls it the “iBox”), the bike lengthens during the top of the travel. Meanwhile, the suspension is controlled throughout its entire travel, and ramps up at the end of the stroke to reduce bottom-out.

Lost yet? The main takeaway is excellent small bump sensitivity, better pedalling efficiency, greater control at the top of the suspension, and reduced bottom out. It’s sophisticated, high-level stuff, and the fact that Intense leverages this platform and *then* meticulously tunes it to each bike is a bit of a big deal.



##### Alright, that makes sense. Let’s talk bikes. What’s the Primer all about?
Along with the Recluse (more on that bike later), the [Primer](/en/brand/intense/products/gear/cycling-gear/bikes/mountain-bikes/c/1527?q=primer%3Asales-rank&text=primer) is Intense’s do-anything, go anywhere bike. It’s a 29er trail bike with a slightly-aggressive headtube (67.5 degrees), 140mm up front  and 130/115mm in the rear. The front and rear triangle are full carbon.

##### So what’s the Primer good for?
A lot of everything. Let’s say you live on the west coast with burly, steep terrain. With the Primer, Intense has managed to squeeze the fast-rolling goodness of 29er set-ups into a package that feels compact and flickable when descending. With a lot of 29ers, there’s a sense that they’re too long, and so they can feel like they handle like an old Chrysler. Larger wheels equal a longer wheelbase, and while that might be super, it’s not necessarily what you want when you’re darting through technical, fast trail where timing and responsiveness are key. With the Primer, Intense has shortened the chainstays and overall wheelbase dramatically (thanks, in part, to the JS Tuned suspension). The result? A ride that feels remarkably competent on gnarly, gravity-oriented trails.



##### Okay great, so it’s a solid gravity bike. That’s it?
Well, no, not at all. The 29er set-up, slightly aggressive geometry, and pretty-light overall weight also make it a talented XC machine. So if you live in an area that also has XC trails or calls for more climbing, you’re dialled.

It’s not quite as light as some full-blown XC rides, but it’s not supposed to be. Instead, it hits the sweet spot between all-mountain and XC that gives it a bit of a two-faced character (in the best way possible). You can thrash about on steep trails with your Tuesday night buddies and have a blast doing it. Yet if you’re looking to enter a few XC races over the season, it’ll handle those with spritely grace – the JS Tuned suspension set-up Intense is so efficient that it’s a bike that feels faster than it should be on sections of climbing. It might be a set of wheels away from being a race weapon, but, general consensus is that it’s the ultimate “do anything, go anywhere” bike on display by Intense for 2017.



##### And what are the different Primer builds?
[Foundation](/en/product/5051-557/Primer-Foundation-Bike), [Expert](/en/product/5051-558/Primer-Expert-Bike) and [Pro](/en/product/5051-555/Primer-Pro-Bike). Expect to see different component specs across all three (like the drool-worthy SRAM Eagle kit on the Pro), but we won’t go into that level of detail here. One thing to note is that the Pro build utilizes a different carbon fibre layup and achingly sweet titanium bolts and hardware to shave a few extra grams. It’s a gorgeous, truly special build.



##### Let’s move on: tell me about the Intense Recluse.
Another flavour of all-rounder from Intense. The quick ’n’ dirty facts: 27.5 wheels and a touch more travel (140mm in the rear, 150mm up front) combined with a slacker headtube than the Primer, which all orients the [Recluse](/en/brand/intense/products/gear/cycling-gear/bikes/mountain-bikes/c/1527?q=recluse%3Asales-rank&text=recluse) into steeper, gnarlier terrain. The enduro inspired geometry makes it a stable, wonderful machine when descending, yet it doesn’t suffer from being too slack.



##### Explain.
Well, with a slack geometry comes the chance of lethargic or “flip flop” handling. Power into a corner, and there’s the risk that the bike will unpredictably fold into itself or oversteer like a 1980s Corvette on wet roads. Not so with the Recluse. It captures the stability of a slacker ride while retaining a handling character that’s predictable and responsive.

##### How does the Recluse ride?
Much like the Primer, the Recluse’s character is largely a result of the JS Tuned suspension. Its unique design allows for a bike with a surprisingly short wheelbase. Yes, some will say that a longer wheelbase equals greater stability, and that’s not untrue. But the slack geometry combined with a shorter wheelbase makes this the best of both worlds: a hoot to huck about, totally nimble, yet still plenty stable. It’s an aggressive machine, but it’s also accessible with a “point and shoot” feel. Don’t expect it to bog you down on the climbs, either – expect the front wheel to feel poised, responsive and planted on steep climbs.

##### Okay, so why choose the Recluse over the Primer?
If aggressive, steep trail is in your future, opt for the Recluse. Yes, the Primer can handle it, but the Recluse will give you just a slight edge when you start to get in over your head. Both hold up almost everywhere, but the extra travel and slacker angles of the Recluse make it a more competent enduro machine. The Recluse is a new ride in the Intense lineup, and you can tell that they’ve packed years of gravity, XC and DH learning into a package that works great on climbs, trail and everything else.



##### Let’s talk about a slightly different beast – the ACV.
Right. Notice anything unique about it?

##### Big tires?
Yep, you nailed it. Effectively, the [ACV](/en/brand/intense/products/gear/cycling-gear/bikes/mountain-bikes/c/1527?q=ACV%3Asales-rank&text=ACV) (that stands for Air Cushioned Vehicle) is a “plus-size” bike.

##### So it’s a 29er?
No, not at all. Like the Recluse and Spider, it’s a 27.5, but like many brands are doing now, Intense is calling it a 27.5+. That means that the frame has been built specifically to accommodate mega-sized 2.8in. tires.

##### Extra big tires: why?
A few reasons. It’s been designed for long-haul comfort and total versatility over rough terrain. The plus-size tires give it a degree of float over loose, rocky terrain that standard trail bikes just can’t match. On top of that, expect a bit more comfort and a smooth ride over burly trail when you run those mega-sized tires at a lower PSI (Intense recommends the 12 – 25 PSI range). One thing to note: this isn’t a race bike. Yes, it’s efficient, but it isn’t designed to rocket you to the top of a climb at race pace.

##### So what’s the ACV good for?
Adventure and outright fun. While the Recluse might be Intense’s do-anything/enduro bike, the ACV is Intense’s ultimate “go far” bike. If bikepacking or riding deep into the backcountry is your thing, the ACV delivers. Rock solid, burly and comfortable, think of it as the ultimate mountain bike adventure ride.



##### But what if I’m not into that?
Then it’s an outstanding ride for intermediate riders. The massive amounts of traction and stability from those tires makes it feel totally solid. So if you’re still building up confidence on gnarly, aggressive terrain, this is an excellent bike to do so.

##### And how about the ride?
It *does* take some getting used to, but not in a bad way. First thing to note: it’s no wet noodle. Tucked in between the seat stay and chain is a bracing strut to keep it feeling stiff and responsive. It won’t climb as rapidly as the Spider or Primer, but it’s far from flexy or lethargic. It’s surprising how responsive it is under power (a statement that not a lot of plus-size bikes can make).

Outside of that, it’s a blast to ride. Big tires equals ridiculous traction, so you can pop and weave and huck it around the trail. A hearty dose of travel (150mm up front, 115/130mm rear) combined with massive tires means you can botch gnarly lines and not feel like an idiot for doing so – it handles a lot you throw at it. In particular, the ACV floats over loose terrain, and offers an amount of control you can’t expect out of most other bikes. With this bike’s “adventurous” character, you can ride about anything on it (although, if you’re planning on tackling really muddy/wet stuff, opt for a tire with a bit more bite). Try the ACV for an afternoon, and you get inspired imagining just where the bike could take you.



##### Next, the Intense Spider.
Along with the Primer, the [Spider](/en/brand/intense/products/gear/cycling-gear/bikes/mountain-bikes/c/1527?q=spider%3Asales-rank) leans slightly (but not totally) towards the XC end of the spectrum. It’s a different beast from the Recluse, though; many call the Recluse a beefed-up Spider, so that should give you an idea of its character. However, don’t mistake it for a delicate XC butterfly.

##### How so?
Again, the Spider represents a niche in the mountain bike world that, until recently, didn’t really exist: the mid-travel trail bike. 140mm (or 130mm on some builds) in the front and an adjustable 115mm or 130mm in the rear means it can handle itself without being excessive. It’ll absolutely rip undulating sections of trail where flow and finesse is required, and it feels light and spritely to ride.

Truly gnarly sections of down – ones that you’d tackle with no hesitation on the Recluse – might require a careful hand with the Spider, but it *will* handle them with a little extra concentration. It’s a testament to how far suspension systems have come, and shows just how effective the JS Tuned suspension is to prevent bottom out when ramping up the stroke.

##### So the Intense Spider geometry then: race bike, or all-rounder?
If there’s something that the Spider’s been built for, it’s versatility. It’s a lightweight gem, yet the 27.5in. wheels and slightly slack geometry give it some of the flavour of the Recluse. For riders who are on the shorter side, it’s an outstanding alternative to the Primer (29ers are brilliant for a lot of things, but they can sometimes feel a bit cumbersome depending on the rider’s height).

As is the case with all JS-tuned suspension set-ups, the wheelbase is quite compact. So it rides like a barrel of monkeys (that’s a good thing).

##### Now wait, what’s the difference between the Spider 275C and the Spider 275A?
Good eye. The [275C Foundation](/en/product/5051-556/Spider-Foundation-Bike), [Expert](/en/product/5051-548/Spider-Expert-Bike), and [Pro](/en/product/5051-547/Spider-Pro-Bike) are all made of carbon fibre (Intense Pro builds use a lighter carbon and ti-hardware to shave off grams). The [Intense Spider 275A Foundation](/en/product/5051-546/Spider-AI-Foundation-Bike) uses an aluminum frame. Same JS Tuned suspension, same geometry, same crazy versatility, but built using more affordable aluminum materials. So, yes, there’s a weight penalty, but you get all of the boutique Intense goodness that’s made the name synonymous with trail greatness at an affordable price point.

##### So I should buy the Spider if…
… you’re looking to climb like a demon, rip fast and flowy trails, and don’t mind using a slightly careful hand descending aggressive trail. Like the Primer, the Intense Spider has the potential to make an outstanding XC race bike – it’s light, versatile and fast.



##### Last, but not definitely not least… the 2017 Tracer.
Yes, indeed, the legendary [Tracer](/en/brand/intense/search?q=tracer%3Asales-rank&text=tracer) is back. Revamped and freshly tweaked for 2017, it’s a stellar refresh on Intense’s classic enduro weapon.

##### So what’s the deal?
The Tracer kicked off back in 1999, and it’s arguably Intense’s most popular and well-recognized bike. It’s been a game-changer in the trail world from the beginning. Since the 90s, there’s been a lot of evolution in the mountain biking world – and Intense itself. But, 18 years later, the Tracer is still incredibly focussed at doing what it does best.

##### And what’s that?
Shredding steep, aggressive, serious trail. If the Tracer’s cousin, the Recluse, excels on steep terrain, then the Tracer dominates it. There’s a degree of composure and outright confidence here that simply can’t quite be matched by other all-mountain bikes. The best part is that it climbs far better than any bike with this kind of travel should.

##### Tell me about that frame.
It’s a stunner. Opt for the [Tracer Pro](/en/product/5054-119/Tracer-Pro-Bike), and you’ll be treated to Intense’s hyperlight SL frame. On top of that, you’ll also get a full carbon fibre top link for more shaved grams and shred-ready swagger. Below the Pro in the lineup are the mid-level Expert and entry-point Foundation. These also leverage a carbon fibre frame, and each one features an aluminum top link. Outside of that, though, the geometry is consistent across the lineup.



##### Right, let’s talk geometry then.
A super slack 65.5-degree head tube angle and 75-degree seat angle hit the sweet spot between efficient pedalling performance and sweet downhill action. The geometry of the Tracer sets it up for vertical trail success, and its unique Enduro Link System develops that character further.

##### Enduro Link System… sounds self-explanatory, but give me the details.
Think of it as a modified version of the JS-Tuned Suspension system, but with sights placed firmly on enduro. Effectively, the links are longer than on other Intense setups (look at the lower link, for example – it extends way past the bottom bracket).



##### Okay longer links. What does that do?
It creates a more consistent leverage rate and optimizes the axle path. It’s complicated stuff, but after many hastily drawn graphs and hand gesturing, here’s what you need to know: leverage ratio is how far the wheel moves in relation to how much the shock moves during riding. The more consistent, the better – which means that whether you’re cruising small bumps or big hits, the suspension system and bike will generally feel more consistent and predictable.

##### So why choose the Tracer over the Recluse?
The Recluse is a remarkably versatile machine, but when you throw it at hyper-vertical terrain, it’ll lag just a touch behind the Tracer in terms of capability and control. The Tracer won’t climb quite as well as the Recluse or Spider, but when you throw it at a line, there are few machines that are this light and can climb this well that also handle terrain so insanely effectively. With the 2017 version of the Tracer, they’ve changed the game once again.

If there’s one thing to highlight with all of these bikes, it’s versatility.
