A tent is your home away from home. You want it to be a dry, comfy shelter – and you don’t want to have to replace it every year. Whether you need a compact 1- or 2-person option, a tent for festival camping, or a mega-roomy family tent that fits everyone (plus the dog), here are some tips on what to look for:

### 1. Tested for real life


Testing MEC TGV 4-season Tent

The video above is just one example, and it shows the [MEC TGV Tent](/en/product/5047-590/tgv-2-person-4-season-tent?colour=Lava%2FDeep+Navy) being tested a special wind lab (we learned a lot about the best guyline placement with this test). We also have our own materials lab for testing, and send tents out into the wild for [field testing](/en/explore/materials-and-technology) to make sure they’ll stand up to the conditions they’re designed for. Make sure the tent you choose is up for whatever you expect nature to be throwing your way.

A good sealed seam can withstand a downpour and won’t be compromised by the hot sun. MEC tent seams are sealed using techniques similar to the ones used in our waterproof GORE-TEX jackets. Another thing to look for is a full-coverage fly that comes down to the ground (cheaper tents don’t typically have this). Combined, these features will keep wind-blown rain off your tent from all sides to keep water out, with no extra tarps required.

### 3. Ventilation


Make sure there’s space between the fly and the canopy. You want air to be able to circulate through with venting in the right places, otherwise condensation from your breath will settle on the tent walls overnight as you’re sleeping.

### 4. Durable waterproof floor 
Rainy days won’t ruin your camping experience, but wet gear will. That’s why all MEC tents have DriBase™ floors, which uses exceptionally durable waterproof fabric rated to 5000mm of waterproof protection throughout the reasonable lifetime of the tent. It reduces the need for a footprint (which is why MEC tents don’t include a footprint) and also cuts down on fabric consumption and waste. 

With that said, a footprint is nice add-on when camping on sharp, abrasive surfaces (such as gravel), when bare feet or paws will be inside the tent, or for an ultralight tent fly and footprint set-up.



### 5. Heavy-duty zippers
Think about how many times you zip and unzip the front zipper – it’s like your front door when you’re camping. The front zipper takes a lot of abuse and can often be the first part of a tent to fail. Look for heavy-duty zippers (MEC uses the industry leader YKK) and test them out to make sure they don’t stick or snag.

### 6. Aluminum poles


Aluminum is both lightweight and sturdy, which makes it an excellent material for tent poles. Fibreglass poles can break, and steel is heavy and bends without bouncing back into shape.

### 7. Serious pegs
Quality tent pegs won’t break or bend when you hammer them into rocky ground (or when you hammer them with a rock into rocky ground). When you can get the pegs set solidly in whatever surface you’re camping on, it means your tent will stay put, and it will do its job, which is keeping you comfy and dry.

### 8. Easy to set up
Look for tents that can be assembled by one person – it’s especially helpful if you’re family camping, because one parent can set up while the other one keeps an eye on the kids. MEC tents use instructions that are image-based, simple, and they’re printed right on the carry bag, so you won’t lose them.

### Bonus: Extra features or add-ons


They’re not always must-haves, but extra features and [tent add-ons](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/camping-tents-tarps-and-bivies/tent-parts-add-ons-and-repair/gear-lofts-vestibules-and-tent-add-ons/c/1438) can make a difference. Things to look for include big vestibules (sometimes sold separately) or awnings that give you a place to hang out if it’s sunny or rainy. Inner pockets are helpful to stash your headlamp and other small items, and gear lofts act like mini attics to store items out of the way. Divider curtains, multiple doors and built-in lighting can also make your tent feel like a well-designed outdoor home.

Things to look for in a quality tent

Many people think winter camping is something impossible or extreme. But in reality, as long as you have the right gear and plan ahead, it can be a fun way to get your friends together outside in the off-season.

The biggest thing about winter camping is to be prepared. If you’re a beginner winter camper, choose a location that’s easy to get to and plan a single night trip, so you can fine-tune your systems and have an easy out in case of anything unexpected.

Want to give it a try? Here are 26 things to keep in mind for your winter camping trip:

## What to pack


1. Start with a gear list – you don’t want to forget anything, especially if it’s something you need to keep warm. Take a look at our [backpacking checklist](/en/explore/backpacking-checklist) and [ski touring checklist](/en/explore/ski-touring-checklist) for ideas on what to bring.

2. Pack plenty of warm layers, including clean, dry layers to sleep in. Are you someone who’s always cold? Read more tips on [staying warm and sleeping warm](/en/explore/staying-warm-and-sleeping-warm).

3. Avoid clothes made of cotton and go for synthetic or merino wool [base layers](/en/products/clothing/base-layers-and-underwear) instead. [Wool is an excellent material](/en/explore/wool-garments-for-the-outdoors) that keeps you warm and traps heat, which makes it a great choice for damp conditions.

4. Wear [waterproof boots](/en/products/footwear/boots) that have soles with solid traction for snowy trails.

5. [Hand and toe warmers](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/health-and-safety/emergency-and-survival-gear/hand-and-toe-warmers) are excellent ways to keep fingers and feet warm.

## Making a fire
6. If you plan to make a fire, come prepared with [fire starters](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/camping-kitchen-and-hydration/stoves-fuel-and-fire/fire-starters-and-matches), wood, paper and an extra lighter.

7. Make sure to bring enough wood – don’t underestimate how cold it can get during the winter! Since winter is the off-season at many campgrounds, services can be limited in some parks so there may not be wood for sale. Some parks sell wood at their visitor centres since it’s forbidden to gather wood in most parks.

8. If your campsite is far away from the parking area or trailhead, bring a sled to drag in your wood and supplies.

9. Dig a hole in the snow to help keep your fire from collapsing when the snow melts. Using a fire pan is a good alternative (see [Leave No Trace](https://leavenotrace.ca/services/5-minimize-campfire-impacts/) for info).

## Sleeping warm
10. Use a [foam pad](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/sleeping-pads/closed-cell-foam-sleeping-pads) under your [inflatable sleeping pad](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/sleeping-pads/inflatable-sleeping-pads) for added warmth. 11. Depending on the expected temperatures, bring a [sleeping bag](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/sleeping-bags-quilts-and-pillows/sleeping-bags?filters%5Bcustom_fields.gs_sleepingbagtemperature%5D%5B0%5D=winter%20(-40°c%20to%20-15°c)) rated for winter camping (-15°C to -40°C). 12. Use a [sleeping bag liner](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/sleeping-bags-quilts-and-pillows/sleeping-bag-liners) in your sleeping bag for a bit of extra warmth.

## Meal time


13. Bring extra fuel, since you’ll likely be melting snow for water. [White gas stoves](/en/product/5020-289/946ml-unit-%2832fl-oz%29-stove-fuel) work well in freezing cold temperatures.

14. Make sure you bring meals that are quick and easy to prepare (single pot options or just add hot water [freeze-dried meals](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/camping-kitchen-and-hydration/food-and-drink?facets.Ideal%20for=winter%20and%20expedition%20camping) are good ideas). Cooking and cleaning up in mitts can be challenging!

15. And to set the mood (if it's not too windy), Light candles outside the tent to give a touch of [hygge](/en/article/how-to-get-hygge-outdoors-and-more) to your outdoor meal.

## Setting up your campsite


16. Bring a [shovel](/en/products/ski-and-snowsports/avalanche-safety-gear/avalanche-shovels) to clear the snow for your tent site. Dig an area in the snow for your tent to help protect you from the wind. Packing down snow under your tent gives you an even sleeping surface, and you won’t sink down into the snow at night.

17. Make sure you give yourself enough time to organize your campsite, since you’ll be doing some snow shoveling. Start preparing your site at least an hour and a half before sunset so that you won’t be caught in the dark.

18. Use a [four-season tent](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/tents-and-shelters/tents/winter-and-expedition-tents).

19. Bring a [tarp](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/tents-and-shelters/tarps-and-light-shelters/tarps) to cover anything that will remain outside at night in case it snows.

20. When you [select your tent site](/en/explore/choosing-a-tent-site), make sure you’re not under any tree branches heavy with snow.

## Extra tips


21. Don’t forget [lighting](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/headlamps-and-lighting) (lanterns, headlamps and candles are a must) and extra [batteries](/en/products/electronics/batteries).

22. If you want to keep your backpack light, bring [water treatment](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/camping-kitchen-and-hydration/water-filters-and-treatment/water-treatment-tablets-and-drops) and melt snow instead of packing in water.

23. All electronic equipment loses power faster in the cold. Try portable power packs like the easily transportable [BioLite Charge 20 PD Power Bank](/en/product/6012-134/charge-20-pd-power-bank). They work great!

24. Bring [camp chairs](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/camp-furniture/chairs), blankets or your closed-foam pad so that you don’t have to sit directly on the snow. It’s the best way to avoid freezing your buns.

25. Condensation and snow can make your tent and sleeping bag damp. When you get home from your trip, make sure to dry out all your gear very well before you pack it up. This prevents mildew and is [good tent care](/en/explore/how-to-care-for-your-tent).

Winter camping tips: 26 things beginners should know

Whether you’re about to go ski touring around snowy peaks in the BC backcountry, travel through lush rainforests in Southeast Asia, or board a plane for a trip on the other side of the country, knowing how to pack efficiently is undoubtedly one of the most useful skills to have.

As senior equipment designers at MEC, James Brittain and Mark Knight are packing experts. They devote one-third of their time to travelling – across Canada and around the world – to visit factories that make our gear, meet with materials suppliers, and scope out new places to explore outside. They’re also the people behind the designs of MEC backpacks (along with tents, sleeping bags and more), and offer up these practical packing tips:

### 


Roll or fold: Packing Tips from MEC Designers

Both James and Mark are advocates for rolling their clothes rather than folding them.

The beauty of this technique is that you can easily stuff these “burrito-shaped packs” – as James calls them – inside items with empty space, like your shoes. Plus it means you can unroll your clothes without them ending up all creased. Mark points out that another advantage of rolling your clothes is that you don’t have to rummage through stacks of folded items to find a specific shirt.

### Store smaller items inside bigger items
Besides your clothes, you can get creative with how you store other items in the empty spaces of your belongings. For instance, on hiking trips, Mark recommends that you stuff your [sleeping pad](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/sleeping-pads) or a [storage bag](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/sleeping-bags-quilts-and-pillows/compression-bags-and-stuff-sacks) inside your [outdoor cookware](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/camping-kitchen-and-hydration/outdoor-cookware). He explains that, “not only does this help eliminate the unused space, it also serves as protection for your pot so it won’t get crushed.”

### Categorize your stuff with packing cubes


To make it easier to find things jumbled in your backpack, use [packing cubes](/en/products/travel-gear/luggage/travel-pouches-and-packing-organizers). James likes to separate his belongings into different categories for each packing cube: one for electronics, another for first-aid items, a third for cooking utensils and so on. Each packing cube is colour-coded and labelled for clear identification.

Not only does this help you stay organized, it’s also handy in emergency situations when other people might have to sift through your bags to find something fast. Let’s say you get injured in the backcountry, and you’re unable to open your bag and grab a first aid kit. With a properly labelled packing cube, your travel buddy can find the first aid kit with ease.

Mark uses packing cubes with two compartments to separate his clean clothes from his dirty laundry. This is a great way to help keep your fresh t-shirts away from your well-worn socks, and when you get home, you can empty the “dirty” compartment straight into the washing machine.



### Keep everything dry
Travelling to a rainy destination? Mark has these three simple tips to keep your belongings dry:

1. Put a [rain cover](/en/products/packs-and-bags/pack-accessories/rain-covers-and-pack-liners) over your backpack. Besides keeping your backpack free of moisture, a rain cover will also help protect your bag from tree branches on the hiking trail.

1. Store vulnerable items in a [waterproof stuff sack](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/sleeping-bags-quilts-and-pillows/compression-bags-and-stuff-sacks) and then put the sack in your backpack. This will keep your items dry, even when you need to put your bag down on wet, marshy ground.

1. As you’re packing up from a camping trip, put the wet portion of your tent in the outer compartment of your backpack so that it’s exposed to fresh air and can dry more quickly.

No matter what winter activities you’ve got planned, you’ll need to think of ways to keep warm while you’re crunching on trails in snowshoes or building snowforts all afternoon. The right combo of [clothing layers](/en/explore/clothing-layers) is key, but there’s another factor that we often overlook: hot beverages.

The 7 sweet and savoury ideas below are best enjoyed in a [vacuum bottle](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/camping-kitchen-and-hydration/water-bottles-and-travel-mugs/vacuum-bottles-and-tumblers) when you’re surrounded by a dusting of snow or hanging out fireside after a long day on the hill. #### 1. Espresso shot ski


Give this boozy ski-lodge necessity a caffeinated twist – your friends will thank you when you wake them up super early for first tracks. Essential camping gear for Quebec parks

When you surround yourself with outdoorsy types, your notions of what’s normal become skewed. In the MEC community, it seems like there’s always someone sending a crazy peak, crushing a half marathon or organizing a lunchtime party in the park – you’re pretty much guaranteed to meet people who are into the same good times outside as you are. So, while I might have found the idea of a one-night midweek camp-out crazy just a year ago, now I get giddy at the thought. 



Our crew of five left from the office to summit [Mount Seymour](http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/mt_seymour/) on a foggy Wednesday evening in early August. We grabbed our [overnight packs](/en/products/packs-and-bags/backpacking-packs/overnight-packs-35-55l/c/1340) followed the twisting trail up from the main parking lot, and Missy frequently pulled out a GoPro to film the first of many memorable moments as we navigated into the backcountry, the sun peeking through hazy clouds at the top.   



Tents pitched and sleeping bags unrolled, we found a small circling of rocks and set down for a potluck dinner. Local brews, cider and wine washed down our tapas-style hummus and fixings, plus kale and quinoa salads and a bar of [chocolate](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/camping-kitchen-and-hydration/food-and-drink/snacks/chocolate-bars) to share. Elyse, Senja and Rebecca brought out [glowy lanterns](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/headlamps-and-lighting/lanterns/electric-and-led-lanterns) that lit up our little spot, and we were up till nearly midnight laughing. 

The morning sun softly lit up the sky from under low clouds as we packed up and headed to Mystery Lake. After a refreshing morning dip, we dug into rosemary rocksalt bagels and toyed with the idea of breaking out the [Aeropress](/en/product/6009-760/go-travel-coffee-press?colour=Black%2FRed), but there was no need – we were all wide awake from the swim. 



For 15 sweet hours we’d seemingly had the mountain to ourselves, laughing over dinner, listening to the wind sweep through the trees and snacking on sun-warmed blueberries. I’ve lived in Vancouver for nearly a decade and always saw the outdoorsy stuff as a weekend endeavor – but even if it takes an hour or two to get somewhere, random nights with friends out in nature under the stars are worth the distance, no matter where you are or what day of the week it is. 

#### What was worth the weight 

**1. A camera** 
Missy was our resident videographer, filming a bunch of mini-clips that resulted in a sweet souvenir video of our overnight. While her particularly teeny camera didn’t weigh much, it definitely made me look into a new mirrorless camera for the next one.

**2. Cheers-worthy drinks** 
My pack definitely would’ve been far lighter without the few cans I’d stuffed in at the parking lot, but raising some adventure mugs over dinner made it worth it.

**3. Good food** 
Or at the very least, some hot sauce or [spices](/en/product/4014-607/Multi-Spice-Pack) to give your dehydrated stuff some zip. Tip: make sure it all fits in your [bear bin](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/health-and-safety/bear-safety/bear-canisters) before you leave including toothpaste, gum and anything else with a scent.

**4. Mood lighting** 
From dinnertime to our tent hang later, the [lanterns](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/headlamps-and-lighting/lanterns) beat our headlamps for keeping everything dreamily lit. Next time I’d grab one that turns your water bottle into a lantern. 

**5. A cushy sleeping pad and pillow** 
For me this is an absolute must-have. Before I got my light [camp pillow](/en/product/5046-842/VectAir-Pillow), I’d bring a heavy airplane memory foam one, and that was still worth it to not have a sore neck. An [insulated sleeping pad](/en/product/6008-339/vectair-insulated-sleeping-pad) means extra warmth when the sun goes down.

**6. Breakfast and coffee** 
Okay, we didn’t have coffee (the lake woke us up), but if you’re a [coffee addict](/en/article/a-coffee-addicts-guide-to-camp-coffee), it’s pretty essential. Plus the post-swim bagels totally hit the spot. If you’re into big camp breakfasts, don’t forget your [cookware](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/camping-kitchen-and-hydration/outdoor-cookware).

**7. Swimsuits and camp towels** 
That morning dip was definitely one of the highlights of our little adventure. If you’re near a lake on a summer hike, you’ll want your [suit](/en/products/clothing/swimwear) and [towel](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/health-and-safety/bath-and-sanitation-products/towels) handy. 

#### What wasn’t worth it (this time) 

We packed a few extras with every intention of having the most awesome camp-out ever, but when you’re only doing a quick overnight, sometimes there just aren’t enough hours to see all your plans through. We didn’t end up setting up our hammock, I didn’t read the book I brought along, and we didn’t break out the playing cards.

Lesson learned: don’t underestimate the power of good conversation and good company outside.

Wednesday night camp-out: 7 items worth the weight

The Prairie provinces are incredibly vast, comprised of everything from grasslands to mountains. There are scorching hot days, polar bears and everything in between. Because of this diversity, the specifics of preparing for a camping trip are going to depend on where exactly you’re headed. However, there are a few key pieces of gear you’ll want to keep in mind every time.

We consulted MEC camping experts Graeme (in Calgary) and Krista (in Winnipeg) to compile a list of what to pack for your next camping trip in Manitoba, Saskatchewan or Alberta, from Jasper National Park to Riding Mountain National Park and beyond.

### 1. Sleeping system
Whether you’re camping in the mountains of Alberta or in the vast Manitoba wilderness, you’ll want to prepare for the Prairie’s notorious microclimates that can bring anything from rain to sunshine in the blink of an eye. Get yourself a sturdy tent with a fly (such as the [MSR Papa Hubba NX](/en/product/5039-926/Papa-Hubba-NX-Tent)) that extends to the ground to keep the warmth in and the cold and rain out.

Having a sleeping bag with a rating of at least -7°C will keep you nice and warm during cooler nights. Pair it with a comfortable sleeping pad to keep you off the cold ground.



### 2. Clothing system
Even if the weather is predicting sunshine galore, remember that the Prairies can be fickle and it’s always a good idea to bring along a good rain coat, some warm layers (like a merino sweater) and a few pairs of socks. Favour wool and quick-dry materials because, unlike jeans or other cumbersome fabrics, they help regulate your body temperature and take very little time to dry. ### 3. Weather radio
To keep you prepared for the ever-changing climate (including the tornadoes that have been known to sweep through the Prairies), bring along a [weather radio](/en/product/5051-658/FRX-5BT-Weather-Alert-Radio-Cell-Charger) that can be hand-cranked and is USB powered. Some radios even double up as a flashlight and can play AM and FM radio if you want to liven up your campsite.

### 4. Water system
Although larger campsites will often have access to drinkable water, it’s best to pack your own water filtration and purification filter. While a pre-filter will take care of any leaves or sediment floating around in your water, a [Steripen](/en/brand/steripen/products/camping-and-hiking/first-aid-health-and-safety/water-filters-treatment-and-tablets/uv-light-purifiers/c/1242) or some [water purification tablets](/en/products/camping-and-hiking/first-aid-health-and-safety/water-filters-treatment-and-tablets/water-treatments-and-tablets/c/1243) will make sure the water is safe to drink. These are especially useful in the mountains or if you’re camping on sites with boil-water advisories.



### 5. Bug protection
The Prairies seem to have a perpetual bug season, so it’s best to dive in prepared with bug protection. Get yourself some bug spray with a high DEET content or a bug jacket and head net. If you’d prefer to not use a DEET-based product, there are great alternatives that work well when applied correctly. If you’re going car camping, bring along a bug tent which will give you a peaceful bug-free haven.

### 6. Essential extras
You’ll find many small campgrounds in the Prairies that are quiet, simple and give you just the basics. In these cases, it’s never a bad idea to pack along [hand sanitizer](/en/product/5007-068/Hand-Sanitizer---60ml) and [pocket-sized toilet paper](/en/product/5010-241/Tissue-On-The-Go---Toilet-Paper) for an outhouse experience without any surprises.

### 7. Binoculars
This region is home to a host of migratory birds and Important Bird Areas. If watching eagles, cackling geese, bluebirds or grebes is something you’d be interested in, pack a pair of binoculars that can handle the bumps and dirt of camping (and maybe a [bird field guide](/en/products/gear/books%2c-maps-and-dvds/field-guides/animals/c/927?q=%3Asales-rank%3ACFbookLanguage%3AEnglish&text=)) to add some checkmarks to your growing bird list.



Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are all unique provinces, but a few things hold true for all. It’s important to stay up to date on the weather – but be prepared for anything – and to research amenities beforehand as they’ll differ with each campsite.
