Living to ski as much as possible is no easy task; it takes considerable commitment and planning. It’s all about being prepared, from being ready with gear to outlast storms or explore new areas, to being dialled for après with a pocket flask and shades.

The gear on this list is for any serious skier who wants to feel confident in their equipment and maximize fun times on skis:



If the name of this ski doesn’t get you stoked, there’s likely nothing that will. [G3’s SEEKr](/en/product/6010-862/seekr-110-skis?colour=NO_COLOUR) is crazy light, nice and stiff. The shovel nose keeps you floating in powder, and the ski acts similar to a rocker ski when flexed in the snowpack. Backcountry here we come.



It’s difficult to convey how superior Tools4boards booster straps are than conventional Velcro ones. Skiers who like to charge hard can get painful shins from tight straps. Before I used booster straps, I’d take ibuprofen on the hill to get through the pain. Now I can tighten my straps more, but without the pain.

### 3. Well-fitting backpack

### 6. Awesome ski socks


I’ve been skiing Dissent Labs socks for the past five seasons, and GFX Compression Wool Socks are my go-to. They’re highly breathable and comfortable for long days in your boots. Merino wool gives them anti-microbial qualities, which is a lot of syllables to simply say “they won’t stink.”

### 7. The perfect layer


Christmas came early last year when MEC sent me a prototype of the [Northern Light Hoodie](/en/product/6016-910/northern-light-hoodie?colour=Zinnia). It instantly got bumped up to the top of my Favourite MEC Softgoods List. It’s like you’re wrapped in 50,000-count bedsheets, while staying warm. It packs up really well and layers perfectly.

Happy feet make for a great day on the slopes. I’ve been skiing in the previous generation of the [La Sportiva Vega Ski Boots](/en/product/6014-016/vega-ski-boots?colour=Carbon%2FYellow), and can easily say it performed better than I could have hoped for. It fits into tech bindings and some Salomon resort bindings. Prior to this year, there were boots we called “one size fits all,” but now there finally are!

### 15. Great headlamp


From first chair to last call, it seems my commutes are always in the dark. The [Petzl Headlamp](/en/products/run-and-fitness/headlamps/c/1306) solves that problem.

### 16. Dawn patrol sleeping bag

On bright days, you could sunburn your eyes; on flat light days, the right lens choice could mean the difference between accidentally skiing in the wrong place or having a safe fun run. Whether it’s the fresh air or stunning views, everything just tastes better outside. Even the most basic hot dog or mac and cheese seems like a delicacy when you eat it next to a campfire.

But some camp cooks think way bigger and love creating out-of-this-world trailside meals, whether they’ve hiked deep into the backcountry or road-tripped to a provincial campground.

If you’re lucky enough to camp with one of these people, you know you’re in for a treat. Coming up with gift ideas for outdoor chefs can be a challenge, so we asked MEC staffer Fiona to share some advice. When she’s not designing sweet graphics for our website and emails, she’s day hiking, backpacking, car camping and testing out new meals along the way.

Gift ideas for camp chefs

Confession: I’m a chronic over-packer – or at least I used to be. I’ve been on countless trips where I basically threw half my closet in a giant roller bag because I was too lazy to think about what I needed, or I didn’t look at a [travel checklist](/en/explore/travel-checklist) before packing.

Since schlepping a 40lb. bag around isn’t my idea of a good time, I finally looked online for a better solution. Enter: the travel capsule wardrobe. This is a minimalist approach to packing a wardrobe, and includes only the staples you need for almost anything while travelling. I quickly realized that there are few things more satisfying and freeing than travelling with just one main bag.

Here are six packing tips to help you create your own travel capsule wardrobe, along with packing lists from me and James Brittain, MEC designer (and frequent world-traveller), to share what we like to bring in our bags.



## 6 travel capsule packing principles
##### Tip 1: Start with your activities
If your trip will involve hiking, running or a going to a special event, then use those wardrobe items as the skeleton of your travel wardrobe and expand as needed. For example, start with active-wear pants for hiking and running or a wrinkle-free dress for dinner, and think about ways you can build from those pieces.

##### Tip 2: Multi-function for the win
Pack things that are versatile enough to wear multiple times and in different scenarios. For example, stretchy, breathable pants are good for both running or sitting in the car or plane for long chunks of time. If you’re bringing something dressy, make sure you can also dress it down with casual runners or flats (or even tights, if it’s a dress). Bring a tote bag to use during the day and at the end of your trip use it to stuff dirty laundry in.

##### Tip 3: Pick a colour scheme
Stick to neutrals with one or two accent colours. My wardrobe consists of lots of white, grey, black and navy, with occasional pops of red or yellow. Most of these colours go together, so if I’m stuck with only a few clean options there’s a good chance I’ll still look pulled together.



##### Tip 4: Limit your footwear
Shoes and boots are heavy and awkward to pack so limit yourself to a couple pairs. The first pair of shoes that make the cut should be the most practical (running shoes or light hikers) that you can wear whether you’re going on a hike or sightseeing around town. Go with neutral-coloured and supportive.

The second pair should be something more formal that you could wear out in the evening. Pack something you can wear with nice pants, a dress or jeans. Depending on the weather, you could also swap out boots for sandals or casual walking shoes. I like these [classic Birkenstocks](https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5057-826/Gizeh-Sandals).

##### Tip 5: Pack your bag wisely
Some tips to keep in mind:

- Roll, don’t fold your clothes, because it creates less wrinkles and takes up less space.
- Stuff smaller things, like socks or underwear, into your hat to help them keep their shape.
- Put everything that you need to easily access in your backpack so you can keep it under the seat on the plane, train or vehicle. Things like your wallet, phone, earphones, book, gum, snacks, water, scarf, an extra layer, pen and glasses or sunglasses.



Roll or fold: Packing Tips from MEC Designers

##### Tip 6: Carry-on all the way
For plane travel, I’m a fan of the sleek carry-on roller bag in the overhead bin plus a small backpack or tote under the seat. This gives me enough space to pack the essentials without needing to check a bag.

I’ve been using the [Fast Track rolling bag](/en/products/packs-and-bags/luggage/rolling-bags/c/1352) for a couple years now and haven’t looked back; it’s designed to fit in almost any overhead bin. For my small pack, I usually go with something minimal, like the [MEC daypack](/en/products/packs-and-bags/daypacks-and-school-bags/daypacks/c/1333?filters%5Bbrand%5D%5B0%5D=mec). ## Missy’s picks: women’s travel capsule wardrobe


1. **Rain jacket**: I aim for windproof, waterproof and with a minimal silhouette. The Nola rain jacket easily works for fancy-ish dinners or thrown over a tank and tights.  

2. **Cardigan**: I like to have a layer like the Teslin cardigan stashed in my tote if the temperature dips or you get blasted with air conditioning.  
3. **Vest**: Layer it over your striped tee or under the rain jacket. This [Boundary Light down vest](/en/product/6019-625/boundary-light-down-vest) packs into it’s own chest pocket so it takes up less space than a pair of shoes. Also, the face and lining are woven together so down can’t escape!

7. **Dark denim**: It’s flattering, barely shows dirt or spills, and is easy to dress up or down – any [dark-coloured jeans](/en/products/clothing/bottoms/pants/jeans/c/274) are a great option.  
8. **Active pants**: I have a love affair with the [Timeless pants](/en/product/6020-518/timeless-pants).  
9. **Tights**: To wear on the plane, to do something active, or to layer under your dress if it gets chilly. 10. **Dress**: Because it’s nice to have something nice when you’re going out or if you want to catch a live show. Pack along a [simple dress](/en/products/clothing/skirts-and-dresses/dresses-and-jumpsuits/c/1032) or tunic. Choose one that has a bit of stretch for travel.  
11. **Swimsuit**: A must-pack in case you come across a hotel pool or a dip in the lake. The Lahari suit is my pick for a classic one-piece halter.  
12. **Scarf**: Wear it like a regular scarf, as a shawl, or as a blanket on the plane. I go for [something with a bit of colour](/en/products/clothing/clothing-accessories/headwear/neck-gaiters-and-scarves/c/1001) to break up the neutral tones.

16. **Toque**: I always travel with a [beanie](/en/products/clothing/clothing-accessories/headwear/toques-and-beanies/c/1000) since they’re so lightweight and can cover a bad or lazy hair day in two seconds flat. Go with a neutral tone or pick one with a pop of colour to mix it up.  
17. **Fedora**: Okay, so you might not be convinced that a fedora is a travel staple. But this Wallaroo hat instantly makes me feel pulled together, especially when I don’t have time to blow-dry (one splash of water and I’m a frizzball). I’d rather be exploring than blow-drying my hair. In fact, it’s so perfect for travelling that the company made a video (below) on how to pack it so it doesn’t lose shape.

## James’ picks: men’s travel capsule wardrobe


1. **Packable down jacket**: Something packable and warm can save you on a trip. If you get cold on planes you can even use it to grab a nap while the A/C is going. Choose from different [packable down jacket](/en/product/6015-540/boundary-light-down-jacket) options.

One for laundry… it doesn’t stop. My bag is like a game of Tetris and I wouldn’t have it any other way.  
17. **Backpack**: The Vapour Overnighter bag is the perfect sized bag to pack everything into. Has a laptop sleeve, rugged handles, and zips all the way open so you can find everything easily. The Vapour series is one of the coolest projects I’ve ever worked on at MEC. It’s such great value in terms of function, performance and aesthetic.

What to pack in your carry-on travel capsule wardrobe

So there I was, sandwiched in the middle seat of a 5-hour flight to Toronto. On my right? A passenger with shoulders so broad their elbows dug into my waist. On my left? Someone who immediately removed their sweaty (and potent) shoes the moment they sat down. The flight was fully booked so there was no escaping the situation, but my one consolation was that I was comfortable.

When it comes to travel – especially air travel – we don’t always have a ton of control over our surroundings. What we do have some control over, though, are the things we pack for our trip.

Enter: the ultimate travel pants. While I was wedged between Pointy Elbows and Sweaty Feet, I had some time to think about what makes something a must for travelling. Comfort is key, of course, but so are items that can go from looking put together to going for a run or a bike ride.

They are amazing. The waistband doesn’t ride or feel too tight and the stretch is fantastic. I wore them to run to the gym when it was pouring out, and once I was inside, they dried pretty fast considering the amount of rain. I’m not usually a fan of pleated pockets, but the fit is flattering (I have wider hips and booty – so this is always an issue with fit!). These would be great for travellers and anyone who works in an active job that needs freedom of movement, but still needs to look professional.

I packed the Timeless pants in March for my trip to Asia to meet with our factory partners. Verdict? These were my go-to pants throughout the trip. The lightweight fabric was super comfortable and the material doesn’t wrinkle, so after long flights I didn’t get off the plane looking like I’d never seen an iron.

##### My take:

To make sure everything fits in my bag, I need clothes that are multi-functional and don’t wrinkle so I can wear them more than once – that’s why these pants were great on my recent trips. Not only did I wear them with heels to a meeting, but I also swapped my dress shoes for trainers and hit up a local trail after a long day. They work with my chameleon-like lifestyle, which is perfect because I don’t want to think too hard when it comes to packing.

Pro tip: These pants are so breathable you can feel the breeze blow right through. For that reason, I don’t recommend them for cold weather, if you get my drift?



## From the designer
We designed these pants to be versatile, wrinkle-free and easy to wear them with runners, heels or sandals. The pleats also make the pants flattering for most figures. While we sourced fabrics for these in Taiwan, we tested over 50 different fabrics to see if they would wrinkle. Once we chose the fabric, we put it through our in-house testing to make sure it will work.

Camp kitchen checklist

The only dark side of camping and slowly building your collection of rad outdoor gear? Inevitably, you’ll start to wonder where you’re going to store it all while you’re waiting for the weekend or your next trip to arrive.

As urbanization increases and our living quarters shrink (anyone else’s apartment under 600 square feet?), it’s wise to invest in gear that’s space efficient, does double-duty inside and out, and packs up small for storage. Luckily, there are solutions and camping gear picks that fit the bill for your tiny – but still super cute – apartment.

### Tip 1: Go ultralight and ultra-compact
You don’t have to be an ultralight backcountry hiker or camper to reap the benefits of ultralight products. Gear that’s designed to pack up small to fit in a backpack means that it’s also space-efficient for storage. This is especially ideal if you don’t have a storage locker, a garage or a spare room, and need to stash your tent and sleeping gear in your cupboards or under your bed.

##### Fits in a drawer

Not only are these tents super lightweight, they also pack down really small. Since they’re so compact, you can fit them in your closet or even a drawer.



##### Like a puffy jacket for sleeping
For sleeping pads, the latest from our material engineers and designers is the [VectAir sleeping pad](/en/product/6008-339/vectair-insulated-sleeping-pad). It’s an insulated pad that weighs 0.8–1kg (depending on the size) and rolls up into a small package for storage. When it’s inflated, it gives you a cushy warm surface to sleep on, thanks to PrimaLoft synthetic insulation – the same insulation used in some puffy jackets. You can use your breath to blow it up, or use a little pump (sold separately) to inflate it.

Another good pick is the Therm-a-rest [ProLite Sleeping Pad](/en/product/6008-251/prolite-plus-wv-sleeping-pad). Made of highly compressible foam, it expands as quick as it deflates. Depending on the size you use, it rolls up to about 28–33cm long and 10–13cm in diameter (about the size of a tall Nalgene bottle). You can also store it unrolled with the valve open under your bed, couch or behind a door.

### Tip 2: Camping pillows for your couch
Is it just me or could these pillows double as throw cushions? Brands are stepping it up in terms of prints and colours for camp gear, which makes them useful on your couch or in your tent. The [Therm-a-rest](/en/product/6018-268/compressible-pillow-cinch) compressible pillows roll up into their built-in pockets and are quick-drying in case you drool a little (we all do).



### Tip 3: Water gear that packs down
If you spend a bunch of time camping lakeside, inflatables have two benefits for city dwellers: easy storage at home and easy transport if you don’t have a vehicle (or a roof rack).



##### Inflatable SUPs
There are lots of inflatable SUPs to choose from. The newest ones from [Level Six](/en/products/watersports/paddleboarding/paddleboards/inflatable-paddleboards/c/2065?filters%5Bbrand%5D%5B0%5D=level%20six) are 30% lighter than traditional inflatables and also roll up smaller (win/win). You can pump it up in about 10 minutes, so you spend as little time possible inflating and more time paddling.

The SUP comes with everything you need (except for a paddle), like a high-pressure pump, leash, and repair kit. It all fits in a nifty carry bag with shoulder straps so you can easily catch the bus or train to the water. To go with your inflatable SUP, look for a [3-piece paddle](/en/product/6000-500/aluminum-3-piece-sup-paddle?colour=Orchard) that will fit in the carry bag, like this Accent Octane paddle.

If you’ll be paddleboarding, you’ll need a PFD. [Inflatable PFDs](/en/product/6013-595/minimalist-belt-pack) are compact options that you wear around your waist or your chest (this one is from Mustang Survival), and don’t take up much room in your closet.



##### Inflatable kayaks
[Inflatable kayaks](/en/products/watersports/kayaking/kayaks/inflatable-kayaks/c/912) are becoming increasingly popular with urban dwellers since they store easily, inflate fast and dry quickly. They take the need for a roof rack out of the equation, pack down to about the size of a piece of luggage, and are still stiff and responsive enough to handle rough water, including rivers up to Class II (i.e., sections of the Bow river, or any other novice-level river with wide clear channels and straightforward rapids). To go with your inflatable kayak, choose a packable [4-piece paddle](/en/product/5053-036/Lanai-Select-4-Piece-Paddle).



### Tip 3: Camp gear for your kitchen
With limited kitchen counter space in most condos (barely enough for one person), it’s often not realistic to use a big drip coffee maker at home – plus it’s not as delicious as coffee from an [Aeropress](/en/product/6009-760/go-travel-coffee-press). Many MEC staffers, myself included, use [camp coffee addict’s gear](/en/article/a-coffee-addicts-guide-to-camp-coffee) even when we’re not camping. Most are super easy to clean and stow away in a drawer when you’re done.



### 

Once 5 o’clock rolls around at home or at camp, you can swap the Aeropress for a Happy Hour System, complete with a citrus reamer, shaker and jigger cap which conveniently stacks into itself for easy storing in a drawer or kitchen cupboard. Lime margarita anyone?



### Outdoor/indoor blankets

### The biggest space saver of them all

If you’re heading to the water, there are also rentals for kayaks, canoes and SUPs (heads up: you may need a roof rack).

Another option? If you camp with your friends as a group, try splitting the gear responsibility for shared items… maybe you have the big tent and other friends are in charge of the camp kitchen tub or SUP. Not only can this save money, it also spreads your camp gear storage needs across the city instead of solely in your apartment.
